The Ottawa Senators have signed Colin Greening to a three-year, $7.95 million extension, the club announced on Monday.

Greening will carry an average annual cap hit of $2.65 million, a nice bump from the $816,667 he made on his previous deal (which, it should be noted, has one year left on it.)

The 27-year-old has been one of Ottawa’s most versatile forwards over the last two seasons, scoring 17 goals and 37 points in 2011-12 and 19 points in 47 games last season.

The former Cornell standout, taken in the seventh round of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, also finished third on the team in hits (122) last season and blocked 24 shots, third among all forwards.

The new deal will keep Greening in the Canadian capital through the 2016-17 season, which would make him one of the longest-tenured players on the roster.

Only Kyle Turris and Erik Karlsson are signed past the ’16-17 season.
