Just ahead of training camp, Dustin Byfuglien is “looking slimmer and fitter than he has in his time with the Jets,” according to Winnipeg Free Press reporter Gary Lawless.

This is news, since Byfuglien’s physique has not always drawn such rave reviews.

NHL.com lists the 28-year-old defenseman at 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds; however, his weight was reportedly up to 302 pounds by the end of last season.

Byfuglien has three years remaining on his contract, with a cap hit of $5.2 million.

Watch out for this guy in the Olympics. The US can use him just about everywhere and he can log major minutes. Wonder off he would have made a difference against Luongo in Vancouver 2010?

Serious question because I haven’t really seen him play in a while, would he be that effective on the larger ice surface?

It’s not so much about speed as being smart with the puck and making good passes on the bigger ice. It’s more about positional play. You only need the speed to hurry your keester back to your net if you make a bad pass.

Absolutely. Fat doesn’t equal strength. If he’s smaller he’ll still have strength to go along with being quicker which ultimately means more power.
