Spezza: ‘I feel like I’m naturally a leader’

Consider Jason Spezza as a candidate to become the Ottawa Senators new captain in the post-Daniel Alfredsson era.

Spezza, 30, is certainly tenured enough.

He broke into the NHL with the Senators back in 2002-03 and has played 611 career NHL games – all under the tutelage of Alfredsson, who left Ottawa after 17 seasons when he signed with the Detroit Red Wings as an unrestricted this summer.

“I think leadership is something that comes naturally, and I feel like I’m naturally a leader in our dressing room,” Spezza told NHL.com.

“It’s scarier if you’re going to be appointed a role and you feel like you’re not ready for it, but for me I feel like I wouldn’t change too much.”

Chris Phillips, the 35-year-old defenseman who has played for the Senators since his rookie season in 1997-1998, is also a possibility for the captaincy.
