Report: Hockey Canada is ‘extremely disappointed’ that Giroux skipped camp

Aug 25, 2013, 8:51 PM EDT

TSN’s Bob McKenzie emphasizes that Hockey Canada isn’t throwing Claude Giroux “under the bus” publicly or privately. Even so, he noted in Sunday’s Insider Trading segment that many prominent members are “extremely disappointed” that the 25-year-old opted to heal his injured hand in Philadelphia instead of joining this week’s Olympic orientation camp.

McKenzie believes that Giroux ranks among eight forwards who are favorites – if not locks – to make the prestigious team, which is part of the reason the management and coaching staffs are reportedly displeased.

To be fair to Giroux, McKenzie notes that it’s possible that the Philadelphia Flyers urged him to stay and rehab in town rather than attend the orientation, which aims to build camaraderie as much as anything else.

In all likelihood, this situation will blow over, especially since his injury stands as a legitimate excuse.

That being said, if any country boasts the depth to thrive without a player of Giroux’s all-world caliber, it’s Canada. Combining this inconvenience with a rough start to 2013-14 may at least cause some rumblings behind the scenes.

Overall, it’s difficult to imagine a healthy Giroux missing out on this experience, though.

    Non story. Move along

    • jimw81 - Aug 25, 2013 at 11:27 PM

it’s story because maybe giroux might be more committed to flyers than going to the olympics.

      • sunderlanding - Aug 26, 2013 at 12:20 AM

I actually like that. As a kid I was only interested in NHL and the Stanley Cup. The olympics is ok, but really I don’t care. I always thought it would be cool if some start felt the same way and declined to play in the olympics stating: “My goal is to win the Stanley Cup”.

      • nyrnashty - Aug 27, 2013 at 12:00 AM

The Flyers are his employer Team Canada isn’t! He’s Claude Giroux he’ll be on their team unless he’s injured at the time of the Olympics.

  2. laxman1944 - Aug 25, 2013 at 9:24 PM

    Giroux wears a dress…….blah blah blah……….Flyers suck……..blah blah blah……..1975……..blah blah blah

  3. kaptaanamerica - Aug 25, 2013 at 9:33 PM

The idiots at hockey Canada have no clue how to pick a team for international tournaments in the big ice.all they do is pick their USA on the other hand don’t play favourites and pick the best team for the ice and the tournament. If team Canada doesn’t have at least one Canucks skater on it,i hope team USA hands their butts to them.

    • dueman - Aug 25, 2013 at 10:53 PM

I see that you have become an idiot once again. It’s plain stupid that in order for you to cheer on your home country the team must have a player from the Canucks roster on it! I’m ashamed that an a$$hole like you is Canadian!

      • kaptaanamerica - Aug 25, 2013 at 11:19 PM

It wouldn’t be like that if hockey Canada picked the best Canadians instead of their friends.why wasn’t marc savard, for example, considered for the team… too many others to mention…including bertuzzi before the moore incident when he finished second in the league in scoring and was a total machine on the ice… Gretzky acknowledged later that he should have been picked. So now I only cheer for team Canada if they pick players from my favourite team. If hockey Canada stops playing favourites so will i.

      • kaptaanamerica - Aug 26, 2013 at 11:20 AM

More than a few peeps disagree with your personal attack.Canada is a free country where we can disagree with the powers that be. Shove that up your totalitarian a$$.

      • blomfeld - Aug 26, 2013 at 4:12 PM

Here this Kaptaan creature goes on about ‘totalitarianism’ and such, yet below he clearly shows himself below to be a hate monger … “Anglo prejudice runs deep against the francophones” ? … truly unbelievable. We are a ‘decent’ society here in Canada no doubt and yet there are times when I wish we could be a littler tougher, especially with those deserving. People like this Kaptaan for example with his ‘conditional’ loyalty for country, should in my opinion be ‘interviewed’ by the appropriate authorities and made to change his thinking … with force if necessary (ie: give me just 30 seconds with the little weasel and I guarantee you he’ll be singing a different tune) …

In all seriousness, one of the things which I most admire about the Americans is their pride for country. And whether it’s right or wrong, I find that to be a truly ‘wonderful and uplifting’ trait for a people to possess! We Canadians are similar to a degree, however there is still a national ‘hesitancy’ on our part which for the life of me I’ve never fully understood ?

      • somekat - Aug 26, 2013 at 7:07 PM

Not to diss your country, but the reason you don’t have the same national pride as say, USA, is because Canada has never really accomplished anything

If the nation of Canada never existed, the world would not be much, if at all, worse off. the same can’t be said of USA

      • atwatercrushesokoye - Aug 26, 2013 at 11:17 PM

Blomfeld: I don’t agree with you on much but I do think you had a very good post here.

      • blomfeld - Aug 27, 2013 at 1:21 AM

Somekat & Watergate … “may these commenters soon find themselves ‘besieged’ with lakes of expensive wine and armies of highly attractive women ! … inshallah”

ps: please note that Canada had the 4th largest navy in the world at the conclusion of WW2 (ie: surpassed only by the USA, Britain and Japan) … also please note that your White House is so named, because ‘you guys’ had to paint it up with white paint after ‘we’ Canadians marched through and set it on fire in 1813 ! … :)

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Aug 26, 2013 at 1:04 AM

I assume you’re talking about 2002 for Bertuzzi since the Moore thing happened in 2004 and Bertuzzi hasn’t been nearly the same since. well in 2002 Canada won gold, I’m guessing that’s not good enough for you? I find it hard to believe Gretzky would say that he should have taken a player when his team had already won gold, maybe if Bertuzzi was there they would have won super gold? Maybe Bertuzzi wasnt a good fit for that team, or maybe he didnt want to play on the 3rd or 4th line? Or maybe Team Canada didn’t want to be saddled with the untimely penalties the Bertuzzi was known to take during his Canucks career? Or maybe team Canada just took the best team and not the best players?

And Bertuzzi was never second in scoring, in 2001-02 he was third behind Naslund and Iginla and in 2002-03 (the year after the Olympics) he was 5th.

The only Canuck player deserving a spot on TC at this point is likely Luongo, who else do you think deserves to be there? Maybe take off your Canucks glasses for a minute and realize that their aren’t many players on that team that should even be mentioned in the same sentence as team Canada, unless that sentence is “there are pretty much no non goaltenders on the Canucks roster worthy of being on team Canada.”

      • kaptaanamerica - Aug 26, 2013 at 11:29 AM

So why wasn’t Frank corrado on the world junior team and a guy like Doug Hamilton and others were on it? You don’t think hockey Canada was throwing a bone to friends from the Boston org? Hamilton couldn’t skate for shiite on the big ice where a guy like corrado would skate circles around the guy… these guys who hockey Canada ropes in to pick or manage the team bring their day jobs with them and pick players keeping that in mind. The process is totally biased and a joke. Who wanted lindros to captain team Canada back in the day? It was an attempt to make the guy into the leader he clearly never was by people with a vested interest and not looking at team Canada’s best interests.that stuff happens all the time.holding grudges if a guy doesn’t suit up for the world championships and all’s a joke the way they pick the team using nhl guys who favour the people they know and like instead of the best players.

      • 19to77 - Aug 26, 2013 at 3:26 PM

Probably because Dougie Hamilton had spent the past two years utterly dominating the OHL, scoring at more than a point-per-game rate while shutting down top lines? It might be a stretch, but maybe Hamilton made the Junior team because he was really, really good.

But, hey, I’m sure a Hockey Canada conspiracy to keep the Canucks and their prospects out of international competition for vague, undefined reasons makes just as much sense.

      • dueman - Aug 26, 2013 at 3:31 PM

How about because Frank Corrado has a combined 13 goals in 4 full seasons of juniors, and averaged 90 minutes in penalties every season for starters. How about the fact that he was drafted 150th overall, and was the 51st defenceman taken. There were 23 Canadian defencemen taken before him. Dougie Hamilton was the first Canadian defenceman drafted, and the 9th overall player drafted. In 2011/12 He scored the most points by a defenceman at the World Juniors, He won the Max Kaminsky Trophy for being the OHL’s most outstanding defenceman, he scored the most points by a defenseman with 72. He was on the OHL’s first team all stars, and was the CHL’s defenceman of the year! But hey, if you think that Frank Corrado would have been the better choice, who am I to argue? I do think however, that the fact that you do think that Frank was the choice to go with, proves beyond a doubt, exactly how much you know about hockey. Have a wonderful day!

    • Lupy Nazty Philthy - Aug 26, 2013 at 1:59 AM

For one thing, they haven’t picked the team yet. All they’ve done is invite potential players. They still have to widdle 46 players down to 23. Why get upset about it now? Is it that time of the month again?

“If team Canada doesn’t have at least one Canucks skater on it,i hope team USA hands their butts to them.”
Yawn. hard to believe, but your posts are actually getting dumber. If you depend on Canuck players to decide on which Olympic team to cheer for, you’re truly a lost cause. Have fun rooting for the Sedin sisters and Sweden… I guess…

  4. jimw81 - Aug 25, 2013 at 9:56 PM

seems like team canada is worried about their roster

  5. stefet - Aug 25, 2013 at 10:06 PM

Don’t ever mention USA hockey and team Canada in the same sentence! It’s like the AHL compared to the NHL…. Haters gonna hate no doubt… But to say something so ignorant is laughable! USA won’t even finish in the top 4 dude

    A ‘prestigious’ team ? …

Yeah sure … and the German 6th Army was also a ‘prestigious’ military formation as it ‘barreled’ along towards the Caucuses on this very day, back in the summer of 1942 !

Blomfeld’s ‘early’ Medal Predictions for Sochi (Stalingrad) 2014 …

    1) U.S.A

    2) Sweden

    3) Russia

    4) Finland

    5) Switzerland

    6) Czech Republic

    7) Thailand

    8) Canada

    • jimw81 - Aug 26, 2013 at 12:48 AM

my top five teams so far NOT in order are usa, sweden, russia, canada and Czech Republic

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Aug 26, 2013 at 1:12 AM

I don’t even care about your rankings but at least get your history right Stalingrad is no Volgograd, two oblasts over from where Sochi is located. Surprised you didn’t YouTube Back in the USSR onto your post.

      • blomfeld - Aug 26, 2013 at 2:02 AM

        FU Watergate !

In addition to being an ardent fan of the ‘glorious’ Stanley Cup champion LA Kings, I’ll have you know pal that I’m also a ‘learned’ history student of the German effort in the Caucuses back in 1942. The area encompassing ‘present day’ Sochi was the primary goal of Army Group South (specifically the 4th Panzer Division) given it’s abundance of ‘much needed’ oil resources. While at the same time and to the north, 6th Army’s directive was to take the city of Stalingrad and to secure a foothold on the eastern bank of the Volga river, Well as fate would have it, the Luongos (ie: the Italians & Romanians) who were our ‘fake’ friends at the time, both ‘cowardly’ caved in on the flanks when the Russians pressed home with their ‘anticipated’ counter-attack in early December of that year … and of course, the end result is laid out in history books for all of us to read. …

        *** Blomfeld’s revised medal predictions for Sochi 2014 ***

        1) U.S.A.

        2) Sweden

        3) Finland

        4) Czech Republic

        5) Thailand

        6) Upper Volta

        7) Switzerland

        8) Canada

      • mrpinkca - Aug 26, 2013 at 2:17 AM

Actually, the Blackhawks are the Stanley Cup Champions. And Thailand does not have a national hockey program.

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Aug 26, 2013 at 8:34 AM

you were still incorrect Volgograd was Stalingrad, Sochi was Sochi, I guess since they’re in the same general area within what was, and still is, an enormous country you feel okay labeling the entire area Stalingrad? What’s next you’ll be rewriting history and referring to Moscow as Leningrad? Admitting you made a mistake won’t make people think any less of you, I believe your long rambling posts that are never on topic have made sure that can never happen.

  13. thibbledorfpwent - Aug 26, 2013 at 10:38 AM

Just watch, if he doesn’t play for the team, the only francophone players who might make this team are Bergeron and Luongo…. Maybe, maybe Kris Letang or Marty St.Louis but given the players available I’m sorry I just doubt it, I just can’t wait for the mass demonstrations and protests that are waiting to envelop Quebec as they proclaim yet another “inequity” or “injustice”. Crap, is that gonna suck

    • kaptaanamerica - Aug 26, 2013 at 11:41 AM

It was shown clearly francophone players get the short end of the stick when it comes to hockey, don’t remember the author’s name, but it was a former player i believe who researched and wrote the book.etc… Anglo prejudice runs deep against the francophones.

      • thibbledorfpwent - Aug 26, 2013 at 7:22 PM

Yeah, in 50’s maybe when Clarence Campbell was in charge of the league, and even then, the biggest incident of all time in bigotry against French Canadians – see, Maurice Richard suspended – happened because the player involved punched a referee, now there were a lot of other factors that lead up to this, but Richard still punched the ref, what they were supposed to do, send him home with a note to his parents telling them he was a baaaad little boy? As for now, are you defective or something? The people in charge (Hockey Canada) have way too much riding on winning than caring about the language preference of the players who let them win, you think Francophone’s are getting such the shaft today? Name me a player, any player in the league other than the 5 I mentioned who are francophone and even deserve a shot to make this team right now. Until then how about you actually use that apparently barely functioning mass of neurons in your thick skull and compose real and thoughtful posts to add to the conversation.

    Girlie guy

  15. koho6right - Aug 26, 2013 at 3:33 PM

Giroux just had surgery. Cut him some slack. There’s alot of nerve endings in the hand and everyone has there own way of handing the post surgery pain and rehab. If the hand starts throbbing you have to elevate it. Maybe he’s having a tough rehab. There’s numbness and swelling and pain of course. You picked him as an invitee so support him. What a ridiculous thing to whine about.

  16. 668705p - Aug 26, 2013 at 5:07 PM

What a wussy! Will never win a Cup. The wussy won’t win gold either without Crosby carrying the wussy’s load.

  17. nickdipaola - Aug 26, 2013 at 5:32 PM

At the end of the day Team Canada will, without a doubt, put the best players on the team. If you guys were analysts on who should be and who shouldn’t be on the team you wouldn’t be posting your distress on a free blogging site.
