Steve Mason’s mask features zombie George Washington

Aug 21, 2013, 7:25 PM EDT

No doubt about it, zombies are a huge part of pop culture right now, so it’s no surprise that the shuffling masses are invading the NHL.

In this case, they’re showing up on Philadelphia Flyers goalie Steve Mason‘s next mask. Mason, 25, hasn’t been shy about playing up horror movie themes on his masks before, but he looks to really outdo himself in 2013-14 by combining that zombie imagery with icons from American history. tracked down his mask designer Franny Drummond for an inside look at the creative process, which you can soak in via the video below:

Too bad there isn’t any room for a vampire-hunting Abraham Lincoln, though.

Alright I thought Abraham Lincoln vampire slayer was a good movie.

Even more evidence to suggest that Penguins fans suffer from poor judgement.

Since sports are generally over-regulated and there’s not much individuality, I love how goalie masks capture that artistic expression. It’s really the only customizable piece of equipment in sports. And they usually do a good job of expressing both the goalie and also the City they play in. Can’t wait to see how this looks opening night.

I think that’s a cool theme, considering Philly is were the country was born, well n Boston too..and zombies are huge nowadays

yeah, i get the ben franklin but as far as george, i dont see any relevance. washington doubted the content and sustainability of the american constitution. he simply presided over the constitutional convention and had no part in the process really. he believed the constitution did not provide enough rights to the states and said he doubted the constitution would even last 20 years. he was also responsible for the planning and design of the capitol as we know it…i guess he couldnt wait to get out of philly. he didnt like pennsylvania’s policy on his slaves and his presidential home in philly was shabby in comparison to his virginian estates. of course i dont expect a nhl goalie to know this kind of stuff but hey, he’s canadian anyway so why would he?

He may as well be GWs corpse since his goaltending will not hold up. Bad pickup for the Flyers.

We’ll see but i think you’re dead wrong. He has clear starters ability. If he doesn’t take the job he’ll alteast serve as a valuable backstop to Emery. Hopefully all NHL teams are underestimating the Flyers in goal (and overall), bc they’ll surely surprise ppl like you.

I’m not sure, even with only 7 games in a Flyers outfit, you can call it a bad pickup at .944 and 1.90.

The Flyers strengthened their D, and have two experienced goalies that are capable of winning games even if the rest of the team isn’t clicking (both have shown that ability, whereas a Bernier, for example, who has great talent, has not).

Most importantly, in a year where the cap came way down, they have both of those goalies signed for a COMBINED $3.1M. I hate Holmgren, but he’s done pretty good this year (not sure about the length of Streit’s contract, but still).

He should have put a tombstone net on the back with the words “In this net lies Ilya Bryzgalov’s career. July 2011- June 2013” Then they could have just put a ton of pucks behind it. I kid, I kid. But he would immediately become my favorite Flyer in the history of the Flyers if he ever did such a variation of that scene.

Pretty fitting given the fact that the dream of a free society envisioned by those who fought and died in the revolutionary war has been smashed by the coup propagated by the vampires who run the world now. We could use a zombie Washington to take by our freedoms from the scum in DC and Brussels.

“I like turtles.” – Steve Mason

Hey , if he’s better than bryzgalov , that’s all they should ask for , I’m not sure this guy has that 2008-09 season left in him , but if he finds it , I’ll be so happy for Philadelphia fans

The best part is Rob Zombie is doing the Broad Street Bully movie and now the Flyers goalie will be wearing zombies on his helmet.
