EA releases NHL 14 demo on Tuesday

Aug 20, 2013, 6:50 PM EDT

Tuesday represents an exciting day for video game enthusiasts, hockey fans included.

EA Sports released a demo for NHL 14 in North America today, while European fans will get their own taste on Wednesday.

It includes three game modes: Play Now, NHL ’94 and Ultimate Team mode.

Fans of the 16-bit NHL games (/cues Jeremy Roenick references) will likely be most excited about the NHL ’94 mode, which is inspired by the titles that once dominated the Super Nintendo and Genesis era. (Click here for more information about that.)

The Chicago Blackhawks and Boston Bruins are available in various modes while Ultimate Team mode also includes Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin‘s Halifax Mooseheads plus Team Canada.

The full retail game is available in North America on Sept. 10 and worldwide on Sept. 13.

Here’s a video for the demo:

When will they get new announcers for that game, so annoying.

    • ethanmacleod1685 - Aug 20, 2013 at 6:59 PM

Would love to see mike Emrick announce the games

    • tdrusher225 - Aug 20, 2013 at 10:20 PM

I’d like to see Jim Hughson from CBC do the play-by-play

      • Lupy Nazty Philthy - Aug 20, 2013 at 11:18 PM

I remember Hughson being the voice in earlier versions. 2000-ish. Pretty sure Peter Forsberg was on the cover.

    • Lupy Nazty Philthy - Aug 20, 2013 at 11:17 PM

I’d love to see a Jack Edwards version. It would be worth the money just for the comedy value.

      • tdrusher225 - Aug 21, 2013 at 8:30 AM

I’d buy that game in a heartbeat!

    • hockey412 - Aug 21, 2013 at 7:56 AM

As much as I can’t stand the man, I’d love to hear random idiotic statements from Milbury sprinkled throughout the game. Just the dumbest statements you can even imagine (like in real life). At least anytime you’re playing with/against Philly.

Call Pee Wee Herman and Robin Williams

Iron nails running down a blackboard is less irritating that Emrick’s whiney, nasally voice.

    Love it so far!

Skating, shooting, checking and everything seem smoother. It seems to be a bit too much fighting, but it might just be amped up for the demo as that’s one of the big things EA was bragging about. Either way, the new fighting mode is pretty neat. I’m glad to see Bergeron finally get some recognition and is rated an 89, but am disappointed that Rask is only an 87, he should be a 89 or 90. Hopefully these aren’t the final rosters, as the Bruins don’t have Sodoberg, Krug, or Bartowski. Also, why is Dougie Hamilton only rated a 79? He should be at least a 81. The hawks ratings seem pretty spot on, maybe a point higher for Crawford. It seems easier to score with wrist shots and big bombs from the point (more like 11′). Igilna is only an 84?! He should be an 86. I haven’t played too much with the one touch dekes yet, and I expected the nhl 94′ mode to be the actual game…not a modern twist on it, but still neat either way. Flame away.

I think 79 and 84 are spot on for Hamilton and Iginla, respectively. If you play Be a GM then Hamilton will surely progress. Hes still somewhat umprpven. And, at this point in his career, Iginla shouldn’t be any higher. I’m interested to see ratings of all rosters across the NHL.

Can’t wait for the full version.

Good point with Hamilton, maybe I’m a little biases haha, but I still think at least an 80, he’s got great puck moving and a good shot, even if he is still developing. Iggy is getting older, but 85 at least? I guess there’s only one way to find out, a full nhl season, can’t wait either!

Love this game. Hopefully they add without taking away in this new version.

Seems pretty similar to 13 to me..the collisions are a little better and the new fighting stuff is cool and all but other than that…

  6. multiplemiggs - Aug 20, 2013 at 7:59 PM

this game is, has been and always will be horrid

    • jcmeyer10 - Aug 20, 2013 at 9:34 PM

I am sure you think the queers had something to do with this too.

  7. rushledger - Aug 20, 2013 at 8:02 PM

Ethan I’ve been begging for new announcers for years, I hate Clemente and Thorne.

    • ethanmacleod1685 - Aug 20, 2013 at 8:09 PM

I love em but it’s just boring now, it’s repetitive

  8. bigbadbruins77 - Aug 20, 2013 at 8:12 PM

This is good and an improvement, but man I can’t wait to see how good NHL 15′ looks on the next gen consoles!

  9. imleftcoast - Aug 20, 2013 at 8:58 PM

Who is on the cover? Isn’t there a jinx?

    • Lupy Nazty Philthy - Aug 20, 2013 at 11:13 PM

      Brodeur… He’s jinx proof.

  10. pensman29 - Aug 20, 2013 at 9:02 PM

    Martain brodeur

  11. jcmeyer10 - Aug 20, 2013 at 9:34 PM

It’s taking sooooo long to downloaaaaaad. The Sox game will be on before I can play this game.

  12. jcmeyer10 - Aug 20, 2013 at 10:17 PM

You know what’s funny. I felt like I was running the Bruins powerplay as well as they do without knowing the controls for the game.

I’m going to stick the NHL 94 emulation.

If theres one thing I love as much as hockey its video games.
This game plays great. The skating is improved and so is movement. They really improved on showing the faster skaters pushing off the ice and gaining speed. It looks like the AI actually knows how to play hockey. The fighting system is amazing. I love the option to throw some punches and then go in for a grab.

Anyone on xbox live lets play.

I’d scrap all the new bells and whistles for goalies that don’t seem to be neurologically impaired and sliders that have an effect on the game.

  15. jacketsfan7 - Aug 21, 2013 at 6:41 AM

Gary Thorne will always be my #1 guy , just not on any NHL video game , that doesn’t even sound like him on there , where’s the exciting intense Gary Thorne?
