Poll: Would you keep Kane or Toews?

To some, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews represent the best duo the Chicago Blackhawks have seen since Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita. It’s hard to fathom the young duo breaking apart, but people likely never imagined Hull leaving Chicago for the WHA, either.

While it’s easier to picture a scenario where the Blackhawks franchise auctions off every core piece except Kane and Toews, it’s fun* to debate which one of the two you’d keep if you were forced to choose.

Talking up Toews

Conventional wisdom argues for Toews. The 25-year-old captain might be the prototype for an ideal NHL center: he can do just about everything well (and with stylish sideburns). Shouldn’t the foundation of your team be an all-around guy, after all?

That being said, his more rugged style has resulted in some concussion worries.

The case for Kane

The anti-Kane side is obvious enough: his tabloid-fueling off-ice incidents actually prompted some to talk trades with a straight face. Also, as a winger, he doesn’t carry the same defensive workload as a guy like Toews.

The 24-year-old’s dazzling creativity, advantage in total games played and edge in playoff production make strong cases in his favor.

Again, ignoring the “C: none of the above,” option for entertainment’s sake, cast your vote for which of the two you would keep:

* – Unless you’re a queasy Blackhawks fan, that is.

No offense to Kane, but its Toews not even close

    • polegojim - Aug 16, 2013 at 10:36 PM

No kidding… Kane is a streaky player… great then flat.

Toews is a night in – night out Ice Warrior

  2. sharkie29 - Aug 16, 2013 at 10:31 PM

I’d rather tazer. He’s an all around great guy, he can do a little bit of everything but still produce a good chunk of points. Don’t think Kane is ready for the C yet.

    A Maryann or Ginger conundrum.

  4. jonkchar - Aug 16, 2013 at 10:36 PM

    Toews is more consistent

    • esracerx46 - Aug 16, 2013 at 10:40 PM

Except for the start of the playoffs where he could not get on the score sheet goal or assist for far too long. Toews will get you those dirty area goals because of his style. Kane rarely gets those, yet he averages more ppg than Toews.

  5. esracerx46 - Aug 16, 2013 at 10:37 PM

Hawks have a kid that draws comparisons to Kane and Datsyuk in Terravainen. So Im goin to keep Toews, because you just can not replace what he does….everything.

  6. boardupthehouse - Aug 16, 2013 at 10:38 PM

I’d take Toews over anyone in the league. In a few years however I’ll probably be saying Tavares

  7. pwt3 - Aug 16, 2013 at 10:45 PM

They won’t choose between them, and they won’t gut the rest of the team to keep them both. Silly poll.

  8. pwt3 - Aug 16, 2013 at 10:51 PM

Also, for those saying “Toews and it’s even close” (which is most of you), I’d point out that Kane’s best two seasons resulted in huge team point totals and ended in Stanley Cup wins. Toews had a better season in ’11 than ’10, but the team got way worse.

We can argue cause and effect, but so far in their careers, Kane’s performance has been way more indicative of team success.

  9. idun215 - Aug 16, 2013 at 11:43 PM

    I like Kane better.

  10. mp1131211 - Aug 16, 2013 at 11:53 PM

Is Kane’s hair an option? If not, I’d say Toews.

  11. jhuck92 - Aug 16, 2013 at 11:58 PM

This is a very good question. They’re both Conn Smythe winners, proving they can take the pressure of leading a team. I think at this point in their contracts/careers, I would have to choose Toews. There’s a reason why he wears the C on his chest. Kane doesn’t even wear an A, although he would if he were anywhere else.

  12. cgraszer - Aug 17, 2013 at 12:03 AM

Agreed, I love Kane, but it’s Toews and not even close. If Kane had Toews personality and size, he be the most dominant player in the NHL

  13. blackhawks2010 - Aug 17, 2013 at 12:13 AM

Not splitting the foundation. That said, the Captain is our heart and soul. Best Captain in NHL.

    • ravenscaps48 - Aug 17, 2013 at 9:18 AM

Agreed. Crosby is good, but Toews is a General. They all follow his lead

  14. earpaniac - Aug 17, 2013 at 2:44 AM

Toews. He is the Captain for a reason.

  15. mizbinboston - Aug 17, 2013 at 3:25 AM

You have both. Why is this even a question? Blackhawks Day on PHT pretty much just equaled everything about the Sens and Alfredsson.

All these polls ever do is illustrate just how overrated Toews is and how underrated Kane is, and seriously, neither have ever been in actual danger of being traded, despite what the Chicago media will have you believe. They’re two different players who bring different things to the table, and who you’d prefer depends entirely on personal preference and what your team needs. The idea that it’s “not even close” is ridiculous, as is the idea that Toews is more consistent than Kane (he isn’t, but people are more willing to make excuses for when he has off nights). Do you need a two way forward, a face off specialist, or someone to beast on your PK? Then take Toews. Do you need an offensive dynamo, someone who can make plays out of nothing, and has still has energy to spare? Then take Kane.

  18. jacketsfan7 - Aug 17, 2013 at 9:09 AM

Toews is more consistent , and a better leader , Kane is sick in shootouts and has better hands , but toews is the obvious choice

  19. ethanmacleod1685 - Aug 17, 2013 at 9:46 AM

    Toew is a friggin pussay

  20. jcmeyer10 - Aug 17, 2013 at 10:02 AM

Give me a perennial Selke finalist all day. I would not only want his production but the young bucks learning from him on and off the ice.

  21. longcutskolvikes - Aug 17, 2013 at 10:28 AM

Toews. Even if he was a siouxsie.

  22. chanceoffleury1 - Aug 17, 2013 at 10:32 AM

Toews every day of the week and twice on Sundays. He has consistently improved every single year and his work ethic is clearly second to none. Kane, while a fantastic player, is more inconsistent and comes with less intangibles. Toews seems to be an easier marketing sell, too. Similar to the Pens and Crosby, this is still a business and he sells tons of jerseys and merchandise. Correct me if I’m wrong here, but he had the highest selling jersey of last year, no? He’s a marketing team’s dream. He’s an extremely likable, well-rounded, relatable individual that young guys want to be like, young girls want to date, and parents want to have a beer with.

  24. craigmaitland - Aug 17, 2013 at 12:37 PM

Toews is the better player but its hard to deny how clutch Kane is.

  25. girouxed - Aug 17, 2013 at 7:10 PM

    Kane.

  26. tdrusher225 - Aug 17, 2013 at 8:43 PM

It’s not even about consistency or production, the question is whose role on the team is more irreplaceable? As good as Kane is, the Hawks have a lot of skilled wingers and plenty of young players who could find a way to fill that role. Wouldn’t be the same, but still. Toews role as a #1 center who plays at a Selke caliber level, while still being one of the most talented scorers in the NHL is much harder to replace on any team. All that being said, this question doesn’t really matter. Because if the Hawks want to be a great team, you need them both.

  27. spssebe - Aug 18, 2013 at 10:52 AM

KANE. He is far more talented! We saw the real Towes during his playoff slump when EVERY Canadian sportswriter made excuses for the wimpy sulker he showed us he was.
