Nonis says ‘no reason to think’ Phaneuf won’t remain with Leafs

Maple Leafs general manager Dave Nonis is optimistic the club can re-sign defenseman Dion Phaneuf to a contract extension.

“Obviously Dion is a core part of our team,” Nonis told in a phone interview. “He’s our captain. He’s fit well into Toronto and our group and there’s no reason to think he won’t be here for the long run.”

Phaneuf has one year remaining on his contract (cap hit $6.5 million) before he can become an unrestricted free agent. This past season, he had 28 points in 48 games while averaging 25:11 of ice time. However, his defensive play has at times been criticized (e.g. after his gaffe in Game 4 of the Leafs’ first-round series versus Boston), and there have been reports the Leafs have explored trading him.

For now, Nonis says the Leafs are “focusing on other issues right now,” like getting restricted free agents Nazem Kadri and Cody Franson signed.

Nonis believes Toronto has the cap space to get both deals done before training camp.

If he’s getting $6.5m this year, I don’t believe he’s due a raise in in his upcoming contract.

As voted by his peers – “The Most Overrated Player in the NHL”!……….enough said

Let me put this in perspective for you douchebag. There were only 161 players interviewed, and out of those 161 players only 21% voted Phaneuf, which equates to only 30 guys. So the reverse of this equation is also true, which means, 130 players out of 161, or 80% of all players interviewed don’t think that Phaneuf is the most overrated player in the league!………..enough said!

When you pull your head out of your azz this spring and realize your Laffs still don’t have the right stuff, the rest of Canada will be laughing at the brown stains on your ears once again. Dueman, you pay him the 6.5 and sign him for 8 more years!

Bet you think Kessel is just wonderful too having been voted by his peers “The Most Easily Intimidated Player in the NHL” with the brown stains in his shorts to match those on your ears!
