For sale: Nystrom’s game-worn jersey…that he scored the 1980 Stanley Cup-winning goal wearing

Jul 30, 2013, 4:14 PM EDT

Via Puck Daddy and Islanders Point Blank, the jersey that Bob Nystrom was wearing when he scored arguably the biggest goal in New York Islanders history is up for auction.

The current bid is $26,000 (plus a 19.5% fee), with the auction set to end tomorrow night.

Nystrom’s goal, scored in overtime, came in Game 6 of the 1980 Cup final as he tipped a pass from teammate John Tonelli past Flyers goalie Pete Peeters.

The Isles would go on to win three more Stanley Cups in the next three years before the Edmonton Oilers took over as the powerhouse team of the NHL.

Since winning their last Cup in 1983, the Isles have won just seven playoff series total (none since 1993).

After 1980, it wasn’t until 1996 when an overtime goal (Uwe Krupp, Colorado) won a team the Stanley Cup.

Any huge hockey fans from the 80’s would really love to have this I am sure.

I am a 90’s guy, but being from Long Island and know the history of the Isles well, I’m not even an Isles fan (Hawks fan as most of us know) but I would love to own this.

Solid piece of memorabilia right there.

    That’s worth a lot more than $26,000

“Since winning their last Cup in 1983, the Isles have won just seven playoff series total (none since 1993)”

Really had to just toss that line in there? We’re aware.

Would be an awesome piece of history to own

      That was for 1982.

        haha fair enough

      • bcisleman - Jul 30, 2013 at 11:26 PM

Yes, its tough to see your team swept on home ice.

When Harold Snepts got hooked and the puck went to Bossy in front in OT in Game 1, it was all over. Canucks only hope was to win that first game. As a kid, that was a tough one to watch, and I remember where I watched that game.

      • imleftcoast - Jul 31, 2013 at 2:32 PM

Actually, it was an egregious slash from Trottier. Why not help the 4 time champions defeat the Cinderella team?

      • islesjb - Jul 31, 2013 at 3:22 PM

Whats egregious was those Canuck jerseys (save me the Gordons Fisherman jokes)

      • imleftcoast - Jul 31, 2013 at 9:29 PM

Two seconds left in the OT, and you move the puck Harold? That’s egregious. Those jerseys were awful though.

He was offsides on that “goal.”

¥eah, well Brett Hull’s foot was in the crease when Dallas beat the Sabres. It should have been reviewed and overturned but Bettman was so eager for face time, he just barged right on ahead and screwed us.

    • islesjb - Jul 30, 2013 at 8:38 PM

      sour grapes bro

  6. mattyo99 - Jul 30, 2013 at 6:00 PM

    Oh the offsides goal jersey

  7. maalea - Jul 30, 2013 at 6:26 PM

It should be worth a lot more that that. It’s the biggest illegally scored goal in the history of the NHL.

  8. bruinsfan1953 - Jul 30, 2013 at 6:26 PM

I hope he didn’t wash it

  9. orangeandblack31 - Jul 30, 2013 at 6:48 PM

    Loser was offsides!!!!!

Funny how the team is moving to Brooklyn soon…. but if you look closely at the logo, the Brooklyn/Queens section of Long Island isn’t there. I’m assuming the logo will get a small tweek when the team moves.

That said… This is an awesome sweater to own.

yeah it is. just to the west and north of jamaica bay.

Wish I had the money to buy it and give it back to Bobby. Amazing that Flyer fans are still griping about blown calls 33 years later. Bet I’d find blown calls in the Flyers’ favor if I watched all the tape from that series. Whining about it is just sour grapes. Isles were going to win that series no matter what. Get over it…FLYERS LOST!!!

  12. jacketsfan7 - Jul 30, 2013 at 11:38 PM

To be quite honest with you , I think all the flyers fans are just joking around about the call , If you read the comments carefully

    • bcisleman - Jul 31, 2013 at 12:19 AM

Didn’t get that. Hope you are right.

  13. giantssb42champs - Jul 31, 2013 at 4:59 AM

They are joking. The offsides was on Duane Sutter’s goal earlier in the game.

    • maalea - Jul 31, 2013 at 9:50 AM

Yes, it is tongue in cheek but between the offsides goal and Potvin’s borderline high stick goal, it brings some doubt as to what might have been.

I feel a little bit robbed as I held a ticket for the game 7 that never was.

      • imleftcoast - Jul 31, 2013 at 9:31 PM

Beat your wife Potvin, beat your wife.
