Report: Red Wings talking to Predators about Tootoo

Detroit’s Jordin Tootoo has only played for two teams in his NHL career and he might be headed back to where it all started.

According to Ansar Khan of Mlive.com, the Detroit Red Wings are in talks with the Nashville Predators about sending Tootoo back to Music City U.S.A. Khan says the Wings need to move a forward (or two) and sending Tootoo back to Nashville would be a comfortable move for him.

Ah, but there’s a catch. A couple of them actually.

The Predators also have an abundance of forwards after signing four of them this summer (Matt Cullen, Eric Nystrom, Matt Hendricks, and Viktor Stalberg). All told they’ve got 14 guys up front and just under $5 million in salary cap space. Tootoo and his $1.9 million cap hit the next two seasons might not make a great fit there.

Detroit is going to have to make a move at some point, but if it turns out to be Tootoo going back to Nashville there could be some Preds fans surprised to see him back.

There hasn’t been much salary-eating since the new CBA took effect. Maybe the Wings will blaze the trail in this regard.

At some point I expected him to return , but after one season? that’s tootoo soon.

Wings want to move him, first to many forwards, second, Tootoo I heard got on the bad side of Babcock, if that rumor is true their will be a push to move him.

Being on the bad side of Babcock has nothing to do with the pressing need to get rid of a couple forwards as soon as possible. I haven’t heard anything about these unfavorable notions, only the contrary.

I’ve heard the same. Babcock liked him a lot. Said he liked the physicality he brought during the season. But the problem is he’s a one-dimensional player. You need guys who can play multiple roles if you want to compete in the playoffs and when you have too many forwards, and need to relieve some salary pressure, these are the guys who get squeezed out.

After one season? Wings, I’m sure you’ll find a good place for him. Do it next year with a better Salary Cap situation. Yes, its going to be less next year, but you wouldn’t be squeezing in deals.

The Preds seem so set up front I can’t see them making room for Tootoo. I would think he ends up on a team like Florida or Dallas that needs some energy and needs someone to get the fans going.

This sounds like a classic case of buyer’s remorse. Nashville was OK to let Tootoo walk while getting a big pay raise, and now the Red Wings can’t rid themselves of his salary quick enough.
