The Winnipeg Jets and forward Blake Wheeler have agreed to terms on a new contract.

News of the deal broke Friday evening. The Jets have made it official, announcing the deal on Twitter and again in a press release.

It is a six-year contract for Wheeler, worth $33.6 million.

“Blake is very comfortable with the direction (general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff), ownership and his staff is taking the organization,” Wheeler’s agent Matt Keator told Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun.

“It’s a very good core that will keep growing together in the years to come.”

Wheeler, 26, is coming off a deal with Winnipeg that paid him a total of $5.1 million over two years, according to Capgeek.com.

This season with the Jets, Wheeler had 19 goals and 41 points in 48 games played.

His 19 goals led the Jets in that department, while he finished second overall on the team in points.

Wheeler is scheduled to speak to media on Saturday morning.

    Wow…talk about overpaid!

Let me guess… about $1M too much? Seems to be the going rate these days.

FYI: it’s called inflation. It happens. Sorry to break the news to you, but you’re getting old. You can now say “Back in my day… guys like that only made about $3 to 4M a year”

Seriously? It’s not your money. If an owner allows his GM to overpay, it’s his problem.

Wheeler is a point a game player if the Jets develop a good second scoring line. Worse case scenario, he puts up 65 -70 points in a full season. That’s what $5.6 million gets you today.

My biggest issue with Wheeler is that he’s a little slight. He’s 6′ 5″ and weighs 205. If he could add another 10 lbs. of muscle, he would hold up a lot better in the gritty areas.

        @pfpmb

As I agree, it’s not “your” money, it’s the owners and the GM has a blank check (cap).

Fans don’t understand this unless its about their team. Take my Wild for example, everyone thinks they overpaid for ZP and Suter but again, it’s not “my” money but fans sure can chirp from the bleachers.

        Good times, :)

He’s putting up 1st line winger numbers, he is not overpaid.

damn there goes the chance of him dawning a Minnesota Wild sweater! One of favorite Minnesotans. He killed it at breck high school and at the UofM.

as much as I like Wheeler, with our current roster and forecast, there would be no room for him especially at that current contract if that was the money he / agent were looking to get.

Either way, happy for him and can’t wait for Jets / Wild games, future beast of a rivalry!!!!! I cannot wait to go to Winnipeg for a game and party with Canada’s finest!!!!!
