First came Russia. Then Canada. Now, the United States.

Following is the list of 48 players that have been invited to the U.S. Olympic orientation camp from Aug. 26-27 in Arlington, Va.

Goalies (6): Craig Anderson, John Gibson, Jimmy Howard, Ryan Miller, Jonathan Quick, Cory Schneider.

Defensemen (18): Zach Bogosian, Dustin Byfuglien, John Carlson, Dan DeKeyser, Justin Faulk, Cam Fowler, Jake Gardiner, Erik Johnson, Jack Johnson, Seth Jones, Nick Leddy, Paul Martin, Ryan McDonagh, Brooks Orpik, Kevin Shattenkirk, Ryan Suter, Jacob Trouba, Keith Yandle.

Forwards (24): Justin Abdelkader, David Backes, Beau Bennett, Nick Bjugstad, Dustin Brown, Ryan Callahan, Alex Galchenyuk, Patrick Kane, Ryan Kesler, Phil Kessel, Trevor Lewis, Kyle Okposo, TJ Oshie, Max Pacioretty, Kyle Palmieri, Zack Parise, Joe Pavelski, Bobby Ryan, Brandon Saad, Craig Smith, Paul Stastny, Derek Stepan, James van Riemsdyk, Blake Wheeler.

Goaltending is expected to be a major strength of the Americans, who fell in overtime to Canada in the gold-medal game in 2010. The U.S. also boasts tremendous speed, particularly up front — and remember that the 2014 Games will be played on the larger international ice.

While the Americans still may not have the defensive depth that Canada will bring to Sochi, they’re arguably deeper than they were three-and-a-half years ago in Vancouver.

  1. 950003cups - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:01 PM

I like our odds with this group

    • kaptaanamerica - Jul 22, 2013 at 7:39 PM

Kesler will have to lead this team if it has any chance of winning. No one is better when he goes into beast mode.the guy played with all heart last Olympics. As a Canadian, i hope he shows the world what he can do.maybe he can then help the Canucks win the cup and get the rare double, gold medal and Stanley cup in the same year.

    • bekay19 - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:46 AM

I dont understand how Brian Gionta got left off this left…. all these rookies and unproven players but not the captain and former 40 goal scorer?? cmon USA

    • lostpuppysyndrome - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:49 AM

      What odds are those? 100:1?

      • lostpuppysyndrome - Jul 24, 2013 at 10:50 AM

Though if Bogo and Trouba make the team, I might be ok with cheering for them in the Bronze consolation round.

  2. 19to77 - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:03 PM

Somewhere, Tim Thomas is composing an angry Facebook message about being held off the team because of Obama.

    • pastabelly - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:29 PM

Thomas “retired” and he’s not very smart if he thought he’d be considered.

  3. truwarier90 - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:06 PM

tim thomas will be allowed to attend only if he shaves off his hitler moustache and loses his trailer park potbelly, timmy better get into shape and get on an nhl roster before he thinks about sochi. REAL TALK.

    • brockohol - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:08 PM

Quick, Schneider, Howard…Thomas is not even on the radar

      • jpelle82 - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:12 PM

        quick, *anderson, howard

      • rjmisles1980 - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:26 PM

Craig Anderson has to be in before either Schneider or Howard imho

      • clefty1 - Jul 22, 2013 at 8:22 PM

Quick will probably be the starter, Howard should make it, Schneider and Anderson will battle it out for the final goaltending spot.

      • donfocker89 - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:18 PM

I say Miller makes the team because of the experience from the last Olympics. He’s in a contract year and still has a lot to prove. But then again so does Schneider in New Jersey. Either way I’ll be happy with the goaltending and should be fun to watch leading up.

    • 950003cups - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:12 PM

      Thomas is not active.
He doesn’t sport a “Hitler” mustache.
      He won’t blame Obama.

And you losers need a real life.

  4. brockohol - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:07 PM

You can for sure get a solid top 6 D out of this group with Suter and Yandle highlighting it but its amazing how much deeper the Canadian pool is.

    • jpelle82 - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:17 PM

i’d like to see jake gardiner partnered with suter. just let gardiner free out there to do what he can do.

    • rgledz - Jul 22, 2013 at 5:15 PM

I’d go Suter, Carlson, McDonagh, E. Johnson, Bogosian, Shattenkirk, Leddy and Yandle in no particular order. Paul Martin in the mix as well. 13 Minnesotans on the list of 48. Well done boys!

      • jpelle82 - Jul 22, 2013 at 5:17 PM

        carlson sucks

      • kyzslew77 - Jul 22, 2013 at 5:52 PM

Ask Canada about his play in international competition

      • spiciercheez - Jul 22, 2013 at 7:34 PM

No big deal but there are 14 Minnesotans right?

      • bmoreredfury311 - Jul 22, 2013 at 8:19 PM

        @jpelle

        Please explain why Carlson sucks?
So you can stop sounding like a small minded Hens fan/ a-hole.

      • deeboy - Jul 22, 2013 at 8:25 PM

Mark it down. Justin Faulk will make the team and play a lot of minutes.

      • kantnockdahustle89 - Jul 23, 2013 at 8:19 AM

Im a huge Caps fan and no way Carlson makes this team. He was terrible on his end of the ice this past year. Without Alzner…he was very average. His -4 in the playoffs will maybe convince you? Maybe next Olympics for him.

      • jpelle82 - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:47 AM

watch a caps game and you will see why

      • lonespeed - Jul 23, 2013 at 4:29 PM

“Mark it down. Justin Faulk will make the team and play a lot of minutes.”

        It is known.

  5. 950003cups - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:08 PM

Who’s taking bets on Paul “Glass” Martin missing the Olympics due to injury (again)

    • flyers22 - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:12 PM

he wouldnt make it if he was healthy either

      • miketoasty - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:17 PM

He was invited to the camp and is arguably one of the best D men on that list, please give me some reasons why you believe he won’t be on the team? Would love to hear.

      • jpelle82 - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:19 PM

who else would you have quarterback the pp 1 unit? thats probably the best reason he makes the team but not the only.

      • brockohol - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:27 PM

agreed…pedestrian numbers on a team with the best offensive players in the world. my dog could have picked up a couple of helpers on that pp

dont get me wrong, I would take him on my NHL team but I would hope there are 6 better US D than him

      • c9castine - Jul 24, 2013 at 1:13 PM

probably the best defenseman on that list. sometimes people, who may or may not be stupid, scroll through some stats and think about the last time they saw a guy on a highlight reel and use that to determine a guys value. other people watch them play, and analyze the decisions that player makes and the plays and how they affect a game.

those people would tell you paul martin was at least a top 7 defenseman in the NHL last year if not top 5. better than pk “won the norris because i had a ton of powerplay points” subban.

    • Steeley McBeam - Jul 23, 2013 at 1:55 PM

Martin is extremely solid. Dont let your hatred for the Pens ruin your pride for the USA…

  6. brockohol - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:09 PM

One difference between this camp and Canadian camp…I had to look up some of these guys

    • jeffchadwick - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:35 PM

Right, since Dan Hamhuis and Travis Hamonic are obviously household names.

      • brockohol - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:50 PM

Are you saying you had to look up these two to find out who they are, what team they play on, or whether they are even in the NHL yet? I certainly hope not…

And yes there is a difference between “non household name” and “who the hell is this guy”

      • ray2013 - Jul 22, 2013 at 6:52 PM

I had to look up John Gibson, but I knew who the rest were. (Gibson is a Duck prospect playing in the AHL).

  7. jpelle82 - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:09 PM

blue line looks decent as long as carlson, byfuglien, and the johnsons dont make the team. goaltending has to be the best in the tournament or close to it.

    • georgiared - Jul 23, 2013 at 3:02 AM

Yeah cause Jack Johnson was only called the best defenseman and one of the leaders of the silver medal winning team by the coaching staff. Why would you ever want that on your team?

  8. ibieiniid - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:11 PM

oh what? is the whole camp in Arlington or just this orientation camp? I may just have to drive up to see that if they have the full camp at (what I’m assuming is) Kettler.

man, i’m lacking information today… since nobody answered the other one yet, I’ll ask this here too: does anybody know around what time of the year regular season tickets first go on sale?

    • 950003cups - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:13 PM

      Usually september.

      • ibieiniid - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:19 PM

        thank you sir

      • desertfan - Jul 22, 2013 at 5:30 PM

Up North we have already paid for our 13/14 tickets in May with our 12/13 Playoff pkg.

        $20K for both pkgs.

      • desertfan - Jul 22, 2013 at 5:30 PM

        2 seats sorry!!

  9. sheckyrimshot - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:30 PM

i’d love to see backes brown and callahan on a line together.

    • chuchie414 - Jul 22, 2013 at 8:57 PM

      That would be scary good.

    • tdrusher225 - Jul 22, 2013 at 9:19 PM

That’d be one hell of a checking line

  10. rjmisles1980 - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:31 PM

Big Islanders fan…hope Kyle Okposo makes the team this time, especially after his solid playoff and end of season performance. I think he’s primed for a solid season this year.

    • jpelle82 - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:57 PM

yeah but marc andre fleury has made a lot of guys look good lately

  11. travishenryskid - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:39 PM

    Jason Pominville left off? Derp.

  12. billyhauntswizards - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:56 PM

feel very good about this roster !

  13. ericcoyle15 - Jul 22, 2013 at 5:04 PM

beau bennett? is that a serious consideration? id rather bring back chris drury out of retirement

    • jpelle82 - Jul 22, 2013 at 5:19 PM

you must not follow hockey. he wont make the team but he’s worth consideration, its not the canadian roster we’re talking about

      • travishenryskid - Jul 22, 2013 at 5:23 PM

No, we’re talking about Bylsma doing favors rather than pickng the best possible team. Beau Bennett over Pominville. ‘Nuff said.

      • dchambers144 - Jul 22, 2013 at 8:36 PM

@jimw81 Look at the roster and think about your comment. Bylsma is not the GM hence not his ultimate decision. The roster has a bunch of guys that will be future Olympians. Most likely Bennett, Jones, DeKeyser, Bjudstand, Saad, Gibson and Trouba. Unless any have an outstanding 1st half of the season they are just there for the Olympic tryout and development.

      • jimw81 - Jul 22, 2013 at 9:37 PM

@dchambers144, i know it’s premature but IMO I feel Team USA is going into this olympics the same way they won gold in world juniors. I think there will be some surprises on the final roster that will surprise people.Team USA should be given credit by the Don Cherry’s of the world how we develop, IMO a really good hockey program.

As for the roster decisions, I think Polie and Burke should have the final say on this team. Not Shero and Bylsma. I dont know why Burke is getting a bad rap in hockey inner circles.he lead team usa within a goal of gold medal in last winter olympics.

      • thedavesiknowiknow - Jul 23, 2013 at 1:40 AM

Am I missing something? Pominville is from Quebec.

      • budvw14 - Jul 23, 2013 at 4:14 AM

@thedavesiknowiknow. His mother is American. Has dual citizenship.

      • dchambers144 - Jul 23, 2013 at 7:17 AM

@jimw81; I believe you are correct that the player decisions are left up to Burke (with opinions from others). That’s probably the reason RJ Umberger was left off the invite list. He and Burke had a falling out in Vancouver.

  14. jimw81 - Jul 22, 2013 at 5:17 PM

depth at goaltending, forwards that are young and have speed. boy, usa is stack.

    • jimw81 - Jul 22, 2013 at 5:19 PM

people are forgetting this is played on international ice not nhl ice.

  15. tripps3 - Jul 22, 2013 at 6:21 PM

Great to see Brandon Saad on the list – helluva rookie year

  16. remosnozzberri82 - Jul 22, 2013 at 6:46 PM

Ryan McDonough alone makes a difference you mutants

  17. deezenucks - Jul 22, 2013 at 6:57 PM

Guys like Beau are solid. He’s part of team USA’s future. He may not make the team but its good experience for him now.
Anderson Quick and Schneider will be the goalies, Howard won’t make it. Maybe the coaches have a soft spot for Miller but I can’t see it.

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Jul 22, 2013 at 9:21 PM

That’s a good point, in 2001 Jarome Iginla was a last minute addition to the Canadian camp because someone (can’t remember who) dropped out and they needed an extra body. He credits being at that camp with those players to his big breakthrough that season, and of course he made team Canada, was solid in the tournament and scored twice in the gold medal game.

No reason some of the young guys at the US camp can’t experience the same thing…..minus the gold medal victory of course! Haha

  18. kaptaanamerica - Jul 22, 2013 at 7:32 PM

Can’t believe they didn’t invite Higgins booth and maybe Ballard looks like those guys will light it up during the year so hockey USA won’t be able to ignore them.

I’ll tell you right now, I’m cheering for whichever team has the most Canucks on the roster. The Sedins only count once though. :-D

  19. cameltoews - Jul 22, 2013 at 7:57 PM

I like Callahan or brown as captain.

  20. proudliberal85392 - Jul 22, 2013 at 8:52 PM

I like it. Goalies? Howard, Quick, Schneider.

  21. hines86for6 - Jul 22, 2013 at 8:59 PM

No Colin Wilson? Really? Dude is a 20 goal scorer for the Preds next year guaranteed. He’s better than Craig Smith anyway.

  22. blackhawks2010 - Jul 22, 2013 at 10:59 PM

Great group, we have a real shot. USA! USA! USA!
Good luck boys, bring home the Gold.

  23. kingsforever - Jul 23, 2013 at 12:57 AM

All credibility out the window. Trevor Lewis can barely make the Kings

  24. therolandobottom - Jul 23, 2013 at 7:59 AM

John Gibson is the goalie who won Gold for USA in the junior tournament

  25. therolandobottom - Jul 23, 2013 at 8:23 AM

This on paper is a better team than 2010, while Canada team is not as good. USA, USA!!

  26. jdenni - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:08 AM

Me – I like our chances with this team :)
    Russia – Pavel Datsyuk….
    Me – crap…
    :)

  27. girouxed - Jul 23, 2013 at 11:10 AM

Why hate on Thomas? One of the best goalies in the last 10 years

  28. alswingman - Jul 23, 2013 at 10:00 PM

Johnny B. Quick will throw a temper tantrum if he does not start. If the coaches want to avoid that and the indignity of seeing him suck his thumb and crying into his security blanket then they best start him. Either that or they bring him ice cream.
