Many of the names you’ll recognize. Others, not so much.

Per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, here are the 35 candidates to represent host Russia at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Goalies (5): Sergei Bobrovsky, Semyon Varlamov, Vasily Koshechkin, Evgeni Nabokov, Konstantin Barulin.

Defensemen (12): Evgeny Biryukov, Slava Voynov, Anton Volchenkov, Sergei Gonchar, Denis Denisov, Alexei Emelin, Andrei Markov, Evgeny Medvedev, Nikita Nikitin, Ilya Nikulin, Eugene Ryasensky, Fedor Tyutin.

Forwards (18): Artem Anisimov, Michael Varnakov, Pavel Datsyuk, Ilya Kovalchuk, Denis Kokarev, Evgeny Kuznetsov, Nikolai Kulemin, Evgeni Malkin, Alexander Ovechkin, Alexander Perezhogin, Alexander Popov, Alexander Radulov, Alexander Semin, Vladimir Tarasenko, Alexei Tereshchenko, Viktor Tikhonov, Vadim Shipachev, Nail Yakupov.

The team will be coached by Zinetula Bilyaletdinov with the above candidates gathering Aug. 23-24 in Sochi.

Boasting the reigning Vezina Trophy winner in goal (Bobrovsky) and multiple stars up front (Malkin, Ovechkin, Kovalchuk, Datsyuk), the big question mark for the Russians is expected to be the defense.

Also of note, no invite for goalie Ilya Bryzgalov.

Viktor Tikhonov? The son of the famed coach i’m assuming? Someone enlighten me please.

    • stevebass2 - Jul 22, 2013 at 1:38 PM

Tikhonov was a 1st round pick of the Coyotes a few years back (29th or 30th overall I believe) who’s games never really translated to the NHL level. Doubtful that he makes the final cut for the team. And yes, he’s coach Tikhonov’s son.

Um, Kovalchuk is not an NHL star.

It doesn’t say NHL stars, it says stars

I gather that they fixed it after my comment :) It originally said “NHL”.

    Poor Bryz.

  4. mrpinkca - Jul 22, 2013 at 1:37 PM

Shame they can’t have Kevin Dallman. He’s basically the Nick Lidstrom of the KHL.

  5. jpelle82 - Jul 22, 2013 at 1:59 PM

wonder if ovechkin will be able to sell kuznetsov on the caps in those 2 weeks

  6. orangandblack - Jul 22, 2013 at 2:17 PM

I would think Bryz would at least get an invite over Vasily Koshechkin and Konstantin Barulin. Maybe even over Nabokov too

    • jpelle82 - Jul 22, 2013 at 5:01 PM

not after what happened in worlds, remember 8-3? pulled after 4 straight? he will never play for russia again.

  7. shoobiedoobin - Jul 22, 2013 at 2:30 PM

Datsyuk and Ovechkin. The best, most creative passer in hockey dishing it to one of, if not THE best shooter in the world? Man oh man.

For the sake of the rest of the world, we should all hope Malkin pitches a fit like he did in 2010 and begs for the #1 C role. Last time he did that he pulled that stunt he played like garbage, trying to be a one man show while Datsyuk made everyone around him better.

Ovie, Datsyuk, Kovalchuk? How the hell do you stop that?!
Second line should be Semin – Malkin – Tarasenko (or maybe Radulov, whoever clicks)

  8. rushledger - Jul 22, 2013 at 2:40 PM

Slava Voynov is a good up and coming defenseman this will be a huge test for him. Gonchar will help on the Powerplay.

    • shoobiedoobin - Jul 22, 2013 at 2:51 PM

Volchenkov and Voynov will be very, very good.

      • quizguy66 - Jul 22, 2013 at 4:02 PM

Vochenkov on international ice. I’m not as down on him as some of my fellow Devils fan but speed isn’t exactly his forte. If that’s their first pairing, Russia is in trouble in the back for sure.

      • jpelle82 - Jul 22, 2013 at 5:05 PM

yeah he got exposed when brodeur wasnt in net to stop the dump ins. he got beat to pucks (speed) and lost some one on ones in behind the net. the devils just sucked overall though so he might do fine with a fast partner.

  9. travishenryskid - Jul 22, 2013 at 2:45 PM

Worst Russian team I can remember.

  10. bruins18 - Jul 22, 2013 at 3:00 PM

Their defense is brutal dude lol

  11. 19to77 - Jul 22, 2013 at 3:16 PM

Their D could be surprisingly strong, or it could be absolutely terrible. Volchenkov and Nikitin have each had both very good and straight-up awful seasons recently. And Emelin may take quite some time to recover from the injury he took. If those guys are on top of their game, it’s actually a pretty solid unit. If not… best hope Bobrovsky’s ready to be a hero, because they’ll need one.

  12. imleftcoast - Jul 22, 2013 at 3:28 PM

The pressure is going to be intense. Probably advisable to have solid goaltending and D, and not rely on flashy scorers who don’t backcheck (Ovech, Kovalchuk)

  13. truwarier90 - Jul 22, 2013 at 3:34 PM

how come grabovski doesn’t qualify for the russian, the dude is a prototypical comie, what that greasy mullet and strong comie accent.

    • tomklassen - Jul 22, 2013 at 9:52 PM

Lol easy Reagan. Communist? This isn’t the 80’s you idiot.

    • lucerus17 - Jul 22, 2013 at 11:27 PM

Yaaaaa uhhh plus he is from Belarus.

  14. lostpuppysyndrome - Jul 22, 2013 at 3:35 PM

Doesn’t matter what their lineup is, they’re still gonna get steamrolled out the the quarterfinals by whoever they’re playing.

  15. truwarier90 - Jul 22, 2013 at 3:36 PM

bryz could chill behind the bench with his toque and double-double coffee.

  16. jacketsfan7 - Jul 22, 2013 at 5:48 PM

Poor bobby , nabby , and varly are going to have to deal with that defense

  17. ray2013 - Jul 22, 2013 at 7:04 PM

No Anton Belov? Considering all the Oiler hype that he was the KHL’s best d-man last season, you’d have to figure he’d at least get an invite.

  18. sheckyrimshot - Jul 22, 2013 at 7:16 PM

its a sad state of affairs when a russian team doesnt have an igor or a boris on it…

  19. kaptaanamerica - Jul 22, 2013 at 7:47 PM

Yeah, i hope this team does some damage.if team Canada doesn’t have multiple Canucks players on it, i don’t givethem much of a chance against the Russians .

  20. hines86for6 - Jul 22, 2013 at 9:04 PM

That’s because Bryzgalov sucks. Flyers fans need to worry about finding a goalie before they think about trading for Weber.
