Blackhawks announce a trio of signings

Jul 19, 2013, 11:05 PM EDT

The Chicago Blackhawks added depth on their blue line and up front with a trio of signings that were announced Friday evening.

The Blackhawks agreed to terms on a two-year deal with forward Drew LeBlanc, who made his National Hockey League debut late in the 2013 season, and one-year deals with defensemen Theo Peckham  and Michael Kostka.

LeBlanc concluded a five-year career with St. Cloud State, before joining the Blackhawks towards the end of the lockout-shortened season. He played his first NHL game with the Blackhawks on April 24. In two games with Chicago, he was a minus-three.

The Blackhawks also added two players with NHL experience to their organization, in Peckham and Kostka.

Peckham comes to Chicago with 160 games of NHL experience from his time with the Edmonton Oilers, from 2007 to 2013.

Kostka was previously in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization. He played in 35 games with the Maple Leafs this past season, but finished with a point-per-game clip in the American Hockey League with the Toronto Marlies.

I don’t know about the Dmen, but that is really surprising. They have two good ones in Rockford that may be ready to move up, and they have 7 on their NHL roster (I’m really hoping that they can move Brookbank – I can’t see him being more that a healthy scratch most nights unless someone is injured, suspended or needs a little rest. They still have to sign their last key RFA – Shawn Lalonde

Very glad to hear LeBlanc signed tho.

I was more keen on them resigning Ryan Stanton, which they did. They’ll resign LaLonde soon enough, most likely similar to Stanton’s deal. These 2 signings(peckham and kostka)are AHL signings only. Peckham and Brookbank are similar players. I’d rather see the young d-men stay in Rockford this year unless someone gets hurt. If they’re on the hawks roster and no one is hurt, chances are they’re the 7th d-man. Keep em in Rockford, games played is always a good thing. LaLonde while he has made strides in his game, still has a bit to go defensively. The one NHL game he did play, I was astounded how much he was playing up with the forwards, then I found out they were playing him at forward. Stanton is a very sound defensive player. Not a real flashy guy, but willing to do anything. And more capable than Dylan Olsen offensively. Peckham and Kostka are guys that will be with Rockford that are going to help the influx of youth become professionals. Lots of rookies in Rockford this year with probably 3 or 4 players graduating.

Always appreciate your comments. Glad to hear they were intended for Rockford, as that would have been a roster logjam.

FYI, I grew up on the far south side, got to see some special Hawks players growing up – the golden jet, Stan Mikita, Eric Nesterenko, Glen Hall, Tony Esposito.

Now I live in far S. Illinois and can’t see them live.

But with Dad and in-laws who are in the Chicago area still and in failing health, who knows I may have a chance to take a side trip up to Rockford.

There’s a site, it ends in It’s how I watch games when they are on WGN since I don’t live in Chicagoland. It’s not HD, but it’s something.

As a Leaf fan you’ll like Kostka. He’s a reliable 3rd line guy. Blocks a lot of shots.

Are you perhaps unaware of Hawks history? “The golden Jet” was the nickname of Bobby Hull. Strong, fast, legendary slap shop – the guy who 1st came up with the curved stick.

I have not researched, but likely the only father/son pair in the Hockey Hall Of Fame.

Glad to see they resigned Leblanc. Had the pleasure of watching his college career and some high school games. Hull’s aren’t only father son combo. Gordie and Mark Howe are another example i can think of off the top of my head.
