Kings captain Dustin Brown has agreed to an eight-year contract extension, the club announced today.

According to Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston, the deal — a front-loaded one that Brown apparently negotiated himself — is worth $47 million total, garnering a cap hit of $5.875 million.

Brown, 28, still has one year left on his current contract, at a bargain cap hit of $3.175 million. The eight-year extension runs through the 2021-22 season.

Drafted 13th overall by Los Angeles in 2003, Brown has 388 points in 641 career NHL games and was a major contributor to his team’s Stanley Cup championship in 2012, scoring 20 points in 20 playoff games.

Here’s Kings general manager Dean Lombardi on the extension:

Holy sh*t, Brown is a good player and by all accounts an excellent leader, but worth that much for that long?

Negotiated himself, I see an opportunity as a players agent after his playing days are over.

Did you not see the other contracts handed out this offseason. Guys like David Clarkson got about the same amount. This isn’t an outrageous deal by any means, its market value.

It’s a good cap hit for a great player.

That being said, after the Cup victory fades, long term contracts to Quick, Brown, Carter and Richards might be seen as a problem.

    Hey just ask Lecavalier.

    • biasedhomer - Jul 18, 2013 at 4:32 PM

Who knows, by then the cap ceiling may be in the $80 millions.

Brown is now the highest paid Olympic diver in history.

Any team would be lucky to have Dustin. Played with him in Syracuse one summer…truly a great person. Would love to see him in NYR someday. Smart move by the Kings. Making the Finger Lakes region proud!

How’s anyone gonna thumbs down this comment. This guy played hockey with the guys years ago. Give the man some credit.

Dustin Brown is a great player, but an 8 year deal? Yesh, that seems a little steep, that is going to take him to his year 36 season. His skill set and play style just doesn’t seem like it will be conducive to holding up for that long.

As a Rangers fan, I love Ryan Callahan to death and I want nothing more than to see him retire a Ranger, but I hope it doesn’t come with the kind of price tag that the Kings gave to Dustin Brown.

    • cerealrapist - Jul 18, 2013 at 10:48 PM

      I agree with this this.
It’s like giving David Clarkson a 7 year deal at the same cap hit…
      Oh wait…

Personably, there is no way I see Brown as the kind of player that deserves that kind of contract extension, especially after the round he had against the Hawks WCF. On top of that, he’s a dirty player. He’s not Torres, but he’s not far from it.

    • Troll_toll - Jul 18, 2013 at 3:05 PM

      He’s gritty. Not dirty.

      • wannabebluesplayer - Jul 18, 2013 at 3:13 PM

No, he’s dirty, ala hit on Pominville. The attempted elbow on Schwartz. The constant diving and looking for a penalty to be called. I agree, he plays with grit in his game, but he is DIRTY in every sense of the word. Take off the LA goggles for a minute. Just because you have only been caught once doesn’t mean you’re not guilty.

Not a kings fan. Good points but think when slowed down many hits can appear dirty. Fast game physic game things happen.

Good move to lock up Dustin, young player. Big cap hit though.
