The Detroit Red Wings have avoided arbitration with defenseman Brendan Smith. As first reported by the CBC’s Elliotte Friedman, club and player have agreed on a two-year deal worth $2.525 million.

Wings general manager Ken Holland has confirmed the news.

Smith, 24, had zero goals and eight assists in 34 regular-season games this past season. He then added a pair of goals and three assists in 14 playoff contests while averaging 19:08 of ice time.

The Wings drafted Smith 27th overall in 2007 and have slowly brought him along, as they tend to do with their prospects.

He’ll be expected to take another step in his development next year after the Wings bid adieu to veteran d-men Ian White and Carlo Colaiacovo.

Smith was the only Wings player to file for arbitration; however, the club still has restricted free agents Joakim Andersson and Gustav Nyquist to sign.

This is great news, Smith had a great performance in the playoffs. Made a few mistakes, but def made up for them the following game. He’s going to be great this year.

Agreed Lampy… he’s still a bit ‘wet behind the ears’… but improving.

      I like the 2013-14 Wings team… a lot.

Did the Wings have to move someone out to make room for him as I thought they were at the 50 player limit already?

      my guess:
as an RFA, i think he was counted in that number still. until a player gets to UFA, i think he’s still considered under contract. could be wrong, that’s just my take on it.

If you include Nyquist, Andderson, and McCollum, they currently have 49 contracts on their roster. There biggest problem is they’ll have 25 on the NHL level, which is 2 too many.

        Sorry, forgot Glendening’s contract, so that’s 50 total…

We could always trade Alfredsson to Ottawa, i heard they’re looking for a Veteran leader…

I’m pretty sure Sammy is gonna get shipped out as soon as he stops playing the injury card and we can buy him out.

Toots is on the bubble too allegedly :-[

Tootoo is in Babcock’s doghouse for some reason. They’ll have to trade him, which will help with the cap.

Hopefully Smith improves this coming season.

The Wings’ D needs to improve as a group next season. Almost all of their blueliners need to step it up.

Great move. Sammy needs to go away and stop milking it. That was a very bad signing

Can someone explain ” file for arbitration ” for me. Is that good or bad when a player does that ?
