Panthers sign Markstrom, might shop for another goalie

The Florida Panthers came to an agreement on a two-year deal with an interesting structure for their potential goalie of the future Jacob Markstrom, the Miami Herald’s George Richards reports.

Financial terms are unclear at this moment.

Assistant GM Mike Santos confirms that the deal is two-way in the 2013-14 and then goes one-way in 2014-15. That would already be an interesting window into the Panthers’ goaltending plan, but Santos really spelled things out by telling Richards that they might look at another goalie if that netminder fits in their budget.

With Tim Thomas and Ilya Bryzgalov still on the market, it’s amusing to imagine them in John Vanbiesbrouck’s old Panthers mask, but it would be surprising if one of those two would come at the price they’re looking for.

(Not to mention play for a team that has only made the playoffs once in more than a decade.)

Santos said that the job won’t just be handed to Markstrom, 23, although it seems like the big Swede has the leg up on Scott Clemmensen.

His first extended bit of NHL play wasn’t exactly a smash success; Markstrom went 8-14-1 with a .901 save percentage and 3.22 GAA in 23 games in 2013.

Thanks to the structure of this new contract, the Panthers could opt to send him back to the AHL for more seasoning if he struggles again in 2013-14. They can also do so if they find that budget netminder Santos alluded to.

I’d say there’s a better chance of Luongo signing in Florida than either Thomas or Bryzgalov. But that isn’t saying much, as TB is still the # 1 destination of ‘choice’ for the 64 million dollar Michelin Man. It’s amazing that people still don’t get it, though I think they’ll start to when they see Gillis return to Vancouver kicking rocks.

Agreed, Lu is hating things in Vancouver now even more than ever and the Panthers are probably his desired landing spot. Can you imagine what it’s like to be on the Canucks now, they must all realize that everything that Gillis has ever told them is very possibly a bald faced lie. Total absence of any credibility!

Friend, you’ve only to recall that Mike Gillis was the most ‘despised’ player agent of all prior to joining Canucks. Owners and GM’s universally ‘detested’ the man and an argument could be made that he ‘personally’ started the ball rolling on all of this ‘runaway’ contract insanity. The fact that the Canucks ownership saw fit to hire the idiot speaks volumes about ‘who & what’ they’re really all about. I remember only too well how this ‘unscrupulous’ rat worked behind the scenes here to usurp the ‘decency’ which was Dave Nonis. In the end however, all rats are destined to have their day. And I suspect that Willard (Gillis) is about to get his, once he realizes that Luongo is not coming back to Vancouver.

Tim Thomas said he loves to prove people wrong. I’d like to see him sign in Florida just because people seem to be doubting his playing ability now and the panthers ability to make the playoffs. His ultimate challenge
