Sharks take issue with ‘Sharknado’ jokes

Jul 13, 2013, 7:30 PM EDT

It was so ridiculously terrific, the TV movie Sharknado is now being referenced in a ProHockeyTalk post.

On Friday, after the science fiction TV movie lit up television screens in the U.S., a back-and-forth began on Twitter between those operating the ESPN, San Jose Sharks and, later on, St. Louis Blues’ accounts.

Below is the exchange between @espn and @SanJoseSharks. We’ll give the decision to the San Jose Sharks on this one.

However, the Sharks organization has removed the tweet directed to ESPN.

Then, the St. Louis Blues (@StLouisBlues) got involved. And they probably should not have done that. It backfired on them, much like it did with ESPN.

I prefer the San Jose SHARTS….SHARTS.

HA! love it! Whoever runs the SJS twitter feed should get a raise. ESPN is the worst – they make Perez Hilton look like The Guardian. Wish they would go out of business. At this point, I don’t even want ESPN to start covering hockey, I just want them to go away…

ESPN is the Al Jazeera of sports.

I didn’t realize Al Jazeera was in love with Tim Tebow.

this is one of the best comments ive heard/read about espn

hate ESPN. it may as well be called NBA HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY 24 hours a day.

    • tmlhockeyfan - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:09 PM

Geez, what did Al Jazeera do to deserve that?!

“S”spin, the magazine! How could we go wrong?

  8. bensawesomeness - Jul 13, 2013 at 8:48 PM

Gotta hand it to the Sharks, stood up for themselves and made both ESPN and the St. Louis Blues sit down and shut up

  9. chazxcore - Jul 13, 2013 at 9:02 PM

ESPN has basically become obsolete with the emergence of the NHL, NFL, NBA and MLB networks, NBC sports network and local sports stations like CSN and it seems like every college conference has their own network.

  10. zwilhelm16 - Jul 13, 2013 at 9:07 PM

Yea except the St.louis Blues won that series.

  11. rebel21das - Jul 13, 2013 at 9:20 PM

Prove that chirping is part of hockey. SJ shouldn’t have deleted the tweet: they are only speaking the truth.

  14. nogoodtomedead - Jul 14, 2013 at 2:13 AM

    Three things-

    1) Don’t mess with San Jose on social media accounts- that stuff is developed in their backyard- I’m sure their interns are as savvy as anybody’s.

    2) St. Louis should shut up- I think these teams are 2-2 in playoff series

    3) The response to ESPN was classic!!!

First of all, this is awesome. Second of all, the #Sharknados started it and now they can’t stand getting so thoroughly pwned. Third of all, by whining about it, they’re just making people want to call them the #Sharknados even more.

    • helladonks - Jul 14, 2013 at 10:06 AM

no, nobody wants to call them the Sharknados. just some butt hurt Blues fans maybe.
and a small number of mentally challenged people

you know, we could let the nhl rain sharks tweets on us all day, or we could get in a helicopter and throw bombs in a tornado.

  16. eagles512 - Jul 14, 2013 at 10:15 AM

The Blues twitter guy should be fired. So unfunny. Sharks guy-give him a raise.

  17. tightbutth0le - Jul 14, 2013 at 10:31 AM

Putting the jokes and the shot ESPN took on twitter aside….

Sharknado was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. Can’t wait for the inevitable sequel.

  18. ironmd778 - Jul 14, 2013 at 11:51 AM

ESPNBA got their a$$es handed to them. Love it

  19. blackhawksdynasty - Jul 14, 2013 at 1:37 PM

Ok, so maybe I’m showing my age a little bit here, but somebody plz explain what “pwn” means…..

    • jcmeyer10 - Jul 14, 2013 at 1:47 PM

From Urban Dictionary, see definition one for your answer.

      1. An act of dominating an opponent.

      2. Great, ingenious; applied to methods and objects.

Originally dates back to the days of WarCraft, when a map designer mispelled “Own” as “Pwn”. What was originally supose to be “player has been owned.” was “player has been pwned”.

Pwn eventually grew from there and is now used throughout the online world, especially in online games.
      1. “I pwn these guys on battlenet”

      2. “This strategy pwns!” or “This game pwn.”
