The Colorado Avalanche signed 2013’s first overall pick Nathan MacKinnon to a three-year, entry-level contract on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old forward reiterated that he hopes to make an immediate jump to the NHL during the 2013-14 season.

“The signing of this first NHL contract represents for me another step towards becoming a professional hockey player,” MacKinnon said. “I am excited and thrilled to have been drafted by the Avalanche, and I am already working very hard in order to be ready physically and mentally for training camp.”

MacKinnon represents the first top pick the franchise has made since moving to Colorado. The Quebec Nordiques made three straight No. 1 overall choices, however, picking Mats Sundin (1989), Owen Nolan (1990) and Eric Lindros (1991).

The Denver Post reports that MacKinnon is taking part in Colorado’s prospects camp this week.

Ya like the avs need more forwards…Their D needs fixing and i cant believe they didnt get jones with that gaping hole in the back end there. Why they wouldnt try to fix a major problem is beyond me

The irony is overwhelming. Someone who speculatively is a fan of Huberdeau/Florida, a team that actually finished WORSE than the Avs in points, losses, and goals against, attempts to criticize the Avalanche about not taking Jones when they too passed on Jones for a player who was actually slotted 4th in the draft. Please tell me more.

With weiss gone the cats have a bigger hole down the middle with centers then their D…if florida wasnt plagued by injuries to major players the whole season then we would have made a better push. Florida has one of the best prospect pools and by adding Ian McCoshen to our prospect pool of D we are better off then the avs. Florida has been stock piling top end prospects for awhile and now they are all almost ready for the NHL. Barkov wasnt my favorite pick to be made and i would be lying if i said id rather him over jones but D isnt our biggest concern if guys like Jovi and Campbell can stay healthy

They took the best player in the draft. They can ship out some of their forwards for a proven defense man.

Draft best available, trade for necessity. Everybody’s doing it.

17 yrs old hopes to be inserted this season. Jesus, by 2030 we’re going to be giving birth to super humans that take 8 yrs to fully mature.
