Devils sign Clowe to five-year deal

The New Jersey Devils have signed power forward Ryane Clowe to a five-year deal worth $4.85 million per season.

First reaction for many: that’s a lot of money for a player coming off a frustrating year offensively. The 30-year-0ld managed just three goals in 40 games with the Sharks and Rangers.

But Clowe has scored 20-plus goals twice during his career, his best season coming in 2010-11 when he had 24 goals and 38 assists for the Sharks. He also has a reputation for performing in the playoffs.

With the Devils committing over $24 million to Clowe, it seems unlikely winger David Clarkson will be back in New Jersey.

    David Clarkson: 426 GP / 97 G / 73 A / 770 PIM

    Ryane Clowe: 435 GP / 104 G / 175 A / 581 PIM

    *shrugs*

    I’ll take it.

Well, except the last two years Clowe’s production fell off, and then last year, fell off a cliff. The same time period, Clarkson’s production stepped up, greatly.

Clowe is also awfully slow for today’s game at age 30. By the end of his contract, he will be too slow to play, period.

Clarkson’s production slowed down really fast in the second half of last season. He has passing issues, along with skating problems. I just dont like the money clowe’s going to be getting.

Clarkson scored 1 goal in 20 games of last season after his hot start and isn’t fleet of foot himself… I’d rather base a contract off of a track record of relative consistency with a few poor years due to injury than overpay based on an outlier season.

At the end of the day Clowe was the BPA for New Jersey, I’d rather have him than not have him at this point – he’s going to be overpaid a bit, but that’s what happens in UFA.

Wow 5 years for this guy?? …Lou is usually smarter then that !

    • biasedhomer - Jul 5, 2013 at 2:03 PM

You have to wonder how much Clarkson is asking. I’m thinking $6M per year? If he was asking $5M for 5 years, I’m sure they would have signed him instead of Clowe at $4M for 5 years.

And after Devil fans told everyone Clarkson would be signed by the Devils 100%. Some getting bitter and nasty about the suggestion Clarkson goes somewhere else…..the Devils themselves now say..

    Clowe > Clarkson

And they are right, Clarkson is a nice player but Clowe is the better version of what Clarkson does.

Was. He might also be over the hill, and if he isn’t yet, he sure as hell will be a couple years before the end of this deal. That’s a long time and a lot of capital invested in a 30+ year old with question marks around his current production.

People who put much weight into a lockout season where teams only played 48 games should get a reality check.

It effected many players many different ways. Clowe had a rough start to the season, maybe he wasn’t ready. Maybe in a 82 game season he comes on in the end and has another solid season.

        I know I wouldn’t dismiss a solid career over a lockedout 48 game sampler.

It’s entirely possible he rebounds next year – but at 34-35, will he be earning that salary or will it look like an overpayment? He’s crossed the 20-goal mark twice and has managed only one full, uninjured season in his career back in 2009-10. He’s likely only good for 18-22 goals, maaaybe 50 points and increasing time lost to injury as he gets older. Power forwards have a shorter shelf life than other forwards and he’s already looking like his best years were a couple years ago. It’s not the lockout season that concerns me. It’s his health and average production.

the rangers really dropped their balls this one, lost a lot of toughness, keep Richards?

  5. Habib Marwan - Jul 5, 2013 at 1:23 PM

just coming off a concussion while playing for the rangers too

    • billyhauntswizards - Jul 5, 2013 at 1:27 PM

      two concussions.

Good addition by the Devils. I like Clowe way more than Clarkson. The term and price is a little excessive but that’s free agency. Hopefully ppl stop ragging on the Flyers for Lecavaliers contract now that all these huge deals are popping up for lesser forwards.

Loved Clowie in San Jose, the guy wasn’t the best point producer but he plays with heart and toughness each day. Nj fans should be happy with this signing.

  8. thejrod2006 - Jul 5, 2013 at 2:34 PM

Bottom line….it’s free agency and that’s the going rate.

Devils also signed Rusty Olsez….would like to see them add one more forward, but I’m probably asking too much out of Devils free agency to begin with

  9. quizguy66 - Jul 5, 2013 at 2:36 PM

I thpught this price would’ve been too high to keep Clarkson. Pretty nervous

  10. quizguy66 - Jul 5, 2013 at 2:38 PM

Finishing my thought. Clarkson’s payday is going to be absurd. Probably like 6 for $44m smh.
I hope Clowe proves to be worth it. In Lou we Trust.
