Report: Red Wings likely to buy out Colaiacovo

30-year-old defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo‘s stint with the Detroit Red Wings might be over. The team is leaning towards using a compliance buyout on him, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Colaiacovo only played in six games in 2013, in part due to a shoulder injury. He also appeared in nine playoff games, but averaged just 15:14 minutes per contest.

With the rise of 23-year-old blueliner Danny Dekeyser, it wasn’t clear if there was still a top-six defensive spot available for Colaiacovo going into the 2013-14 campaign.

Buying out Colaiacovo would save the Red Wings $2.5 million in cap space next season. He was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2014.

If Colaiacovo is bought out, he’ll be joining a thin market for defenseman that will potentially be headlined by the likes of Marek Zidlicky, Joe Corvo, Ron Hainsey, Grant Clitsome, and Rob Scuderi.

First of all, I think Kenny Holland is a great GM. However, if he uses this buyout clause on Colaiacovo, I want to see the money put to good use on Brunner, Weiss, or equally good UFA not to kept on lazy Filppula. We already have a streaky/lazy player in Franzen.

Also I would rather keep CC then Samuelson: 2.5 mil vs 3 mil. They are both made of glass, so I see no difference minus the Salary Cap hit.
If KH buys-out a bad investment aka CC; we need to see a solid ROI on the next one.

CC could still be a 7th defenseman, other then Dekeyser who already proved he can play do the Wings have another capable defensemen to who can come up from GR? I agree as far as buying Sammy out before CC and with the logjam at forward I would rather see the Wings use a buyout on Bert, he is to slow and he has back problems again.

They signed Lashoff last year to be the 7th blue liner. I would like to see CC and Sammy go. I’m just a fan though.

FYI, I’m pretty sure the Ken Holland feels the same way you guys do about buying out Samuelson. If I had to guess, I’d say Sammy is milking his injury. If he’s not “healthy,” they can’t buy out his contract. The rules of the new CBA prohibit teams from buying out the contracts of injured players. Needless to say, he may be overplaying it a little bit, for self preservation to insure job security. It’s shady, but it is what it is.

I read that Sammy was cleared by doctors.
