Report: After missing out on Lecavalier, Habs approach Briere

The Montreal Canadiens were hoping to snag Quebec-native Vincent Lecavalier after the Tampa Bay Lightning bought out his contract, but the Philadelphia Flyers got him instead.

It looks like Montreal still has its heart set on acquiring a big-name forward this summer though. With Lecavalier gone, they have reached out to Daniel Briere, according to ESPN.

Briere, like Lecavalier, was made available courtesy of a compliance buyout. The Flyers shed Briere’s $6.5 million cap hit, which allowed them to go after Lecavalier in the first place.

Briere had six goals and 16 points in 34 games last season and at the age of 35, it’s seems likely that his best days are behind him. That said, the Gatineau, Quebec native has earned a reputation for stepping up in the playoffs with 109 career points in 108 games.

Of course, Montreal will face significant competition for Briere’s services. The Nashville Predators, New Jersey Devils, and New York Islanders are all believed to be interested and that list could grow over the next day.
