Trade: Sharks acquire Kennedy from Penguins

The Penguins have found a way into the second-round of the draft.

Pittsburgh has dealt forward Tyler Kennedy to the San Jose Sharks for their second-round pick in this year’s draft. Kennedy heads to the Sharks as a restricted free agent in need of a new contract. He’s coming off a two-year contract that paid him $2 million per year.

The Penguins headed into this year’s draft without a first or second-round pick. Now they’ve got the 50th overall selection today.

For what it’s worth, Sharks GM Doug Wilson likes Kennedy’s game.

“Tyler is a highly-competitive forward who plays with speed and has a history of scoring big goals,” said Wilson. “He has played in a lot of playoff games over the last past five seasons, won a Stanley Cup and we think he fits in perfectly with our group and how we want to play the game.”

Kennedy should give the Sharks a bit better depth up front, something they lacked last season.

Wow not sure hes worth giving up 50th overall. I guess Pitt needed to get in early tho

Nice. Hopefully Kennedy can turn his career around. He started playing his best hockey at the right time this year which was during the playoff, but 2 million is a lot of money for a 3rd liner who can’t play the PK or ever crack the 2nd PP unit most of the time. I’m not gonna miss his only move of taking deep into the offensive corner, turn to the outside and skating out around the top of the circle and firing a shot……usual into the goalies chest.

Fitting. He looks like a shark

He actually looks like a ferret. Ask anyone in Philly they’ll tell you.

      Rod Brind’Amour….your comment is invalid

That’d be funny if half of Philly’s starting lineup didn’t get their hair styled at the same place Lindsey Lohan gets her downstairs trimmed.

yeah. im sure you saw pictures of bobby clark in his younger days.

    And then there were 8……

This decision was probably in the best interest for my sanity. Thanks for the memories, but it’s time to go drive in and take a crappy goal line shot out in the California sun, Tyler. Your cap space is better used on Letang driving in and giving up a crappy turnover near the goal line. Crappy goal line play can only be reserved for guys making $7+ million a year.

Wow. A second round pick for this kid

    • c9castine - Jun 30, 2013 at 3:33 PM

2nd round pick for a really solid hockey player who has played for one of the best teams over the last 6 years won a stanley cup been to 2 finals 3 conference finals played in 76 career playoff games. i watched him for 7 years and i wil tell you he will be the hardest working and gutsiest player on the sharks right away.

      • johninpa - Jun 30, 2013 at 8:15 PM

Always enjoyed watching him play. He was a fast skater, and his shots were usually on net, either scoring or providing a rebound opportunity. He’ll be a good player for the Sharks.

they basically got their pick for murray back and the sharks get a very solid forward. kennedy is an energy guy who can score (if he’s not missing the net 75% of the time) and has scored big goals his whole time in pitt. he redeemed himself at the end of this year and i was calling for his head before that. that said, he should be a good player for sj especially if he has the chance to compete for a 3nd line gig.

Good and bad. He used to kill us. For some reason he had good games against us. But the rivalry is more fun when all the hated players stay together.

    Definitely Pigman:

  12. drone501 - Jun 30, 2013 at 4:05 PM

yeah, this deal will definitly save the penguins some money.

  13. steelers88 - Jun 30, 2013 at 4:51 PM

    So what about Letang?

  14. titansrbeast - Jun 30, 2013 at 6:22 PM

Noo anyone but the Pigman! I can’t stand looking at that nose, even when he does get an occasional big time goal….

Good luck Kennedy! The guy always plays hard and had no fear of shooting the puck.
