Tampa passes on Jones, takes Drouin third overall

The Tampa Bay Lightning had to be a bit surprised when Seth Jones, the No. 1 ranked North American skater, was still available for selection at No. 3 overall.

But it didn’t sway their choice.

The Bolts drafted Jonathan Drouin from QMJHL Halifax, two spots after Mooseheads teammate Nathan MacKinnon went first overall.

Drouin, 18, teamed with MacKinnon to form one of the best scoring duos in the Canadian Hockey League last season. Drouin scored 41 times in 49 games and was named the Quebec League MVP and CHL Player of the Year, edging out MacKinnon and Jones.

Widely regarded as the best playmaker in the draft, it appears Tampa Bay has now found a table-setter for Steven Stamkos. Veteran center and captain Vincent Lecavalier has been bought out of his contract and is now a free agent.

Drouin is on record saying he’s ready to play in the NHL next season, despite being just 18 years old and registering at 5-foot-11, 176 pounds.

    This is why Tampa sucks as a franchise. they need Defenseman in the worst possible way and take a 5’10” winger. makes no sense. they deserve to suck.

      How does it make no sense that they should get a playmaking winger to set up Stamkos? This is why you suck as a fan

    This is the perfect pick for Tampa, Drouin is possibly the best playmaker in the draft, and it will do him wonders to have St. Louis there to teach him for a few years. Him and Stamkos could very possibly become the most dangerous linemates in the league for years to come

    I just hope he doesn’t turn out to be the Benoit Pouliot of the draft.

    @WindMiller

    because their defense is an abomination. its why you have a 60 goal scorer and don’t make the playoffs.

      You sure that has nothing to do with god awful goaltending? You might want to watch some hockey before you start shooting off your mouth

    Calm down I’m sure they will select a Dman with the first overall pick next year.

    They drafted their next St. Louis.
    If you can’t understand this pick you don’t understand hockey. He’ll be paired with Stamkos.
