Fucale first goalie taken, goes in second round to Montreal

Jun 30, 2013, 6:50 PM EDT

It took until the second-round for the 2013 NHL Draft to see its first goalie taken and it turns out to be a fantastic troll pick.

At 36th overall, the Montreal Canadiens chose Halifax (QMJHL) netminder Zachary Fucale. While they’ve got Carey Price to kick around for the next few years, both the Edmonton Oilers (37th) and Philadelphia Flyers (41st) were eyeballing goalies themselves. Edmonton wound up trading their pick to Los Angeles while the Flyers… Well…

So much for that. Instead, Philly went with Swedish defenseman Robert Hagg at 41. It’s a nice consolation prize.

This year wasn’t seen as a big year for goalies and with Fucale not going until early in the second-round, that’s shown to be true. As for Martin Brodeur‘s son, Anthony, we’re waiting to see when/if he’ll be taken today.

Would’ve loved Fucale at 41 but Hagg is exactly what we needed. Got the tough 6’6″ Morin in the 1st and the offensively gifted Hagg in 2nd… very pleased with that. And Fucale fits well with the Habs. Hopefully they handle Price-Fucale better in a few years than Gillis has handled Luongo-Schneider.

Fire holmgren already, I’ve finally lost my patience with that man, get him out of here and get me a GM that has NO connection to the flyers. If they really liked this goalie so much, then why the eff did they stand pat? Idiots

How can you be so upset with their selections? All we heard all year was that it’s the defenses fault the goalies are struggling. Then they select two defenders (one offensive, one defensive and huge) and suddenly it’s why didn’t they get a goalie? C’mon, even if they drafted Fucale he wouldn’t be in the NHL for a few years. And they have 24-yr old Mason and Anthony Stolarz, last years 2nd, in the pipeline. Holmgren will still make a move for another goalie. We Flyers fans don’t need to miserable all the time… today’s a good day.

I like the first pick but it’s frustrating to me if fucale was the guy they wanted, then you need to go get him and not settle. Plus, I’m reading stuff that holmgren ‘doesn’t know’ how lecavalier feels about the flyers…isn’t that his job to know how he feels? I’m not saying it would infuriate me if they didn’t sign him but I’m starting to think holmgren doesn’t have a clue, believe me, I would LOVE to be wrong and you to be right but hey, at least we get 82 games this season

You guys still have time to get a goaltender. Some good one still available. Riemer, Halak, Ryan Miller, Nabokov, ..and I bet some others for the right price would become available.

Flyers have the 2014 cup wrapped up!

        (Even without a goalie)

Man I was really hoping the Avs would take Fucale or atleast Erne with the 32nd pick.

Oh the draft in Philly is going to be so much fun, watching the host fumblin’, stumblin’ and bumblin’ their way thru they’re picks. Morin as their first pick shows they are still living as if its 1974-75 era. Total joke

Are you upset bc the Pens essentially traded all their picks for a team that couldn’t fail, and they still went down in Flames? Or is it that they’re giving an overrated defender another huge contract that will handcuff your team even more? The Pens are heading farther and farther away from their championship season. Good luck filling out a ton of roster spots with no cap room.
