Report: Horton seeking long-term deal with $6 million cap hit

Nathan Horton is interested in re-signing with Boston, but his reported contract demands might be too rich for the Bruins.

The 28-year-old forward is seeking roughly $6 million per season on a five or six year contract, according to a CSN New England source.

He’s scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 5 and might get that much on the open market. Although his regular season numbers have left something to be desired, Horton has scored 15 goals and 36 points in 43 career playoff contests.

The Boston Bruins might even entertain such a deal, but it wouldn’t be surprising if they bulk at that price given their present situation. Boston doesn’t have a ton of cap space and still needs to re-sign goaltender Tuukka Rask, won’t come cheap.

That being said, the Bruins might be able to clear space by making a trade or exercising one of their compliance buyouts.

“I’ve always said, like I said, I love the guys,” Horton said. “The team is great, and it’s a fun place to play.

“Other than that, I don’t know what’s going to happen. I couldn’t tell you throughout the year that was going to happen, I don’t know and we’ll see what happens.”

So is this just negotiation or is he ready to leave the Bruins if he doesn’t get $6 million/season? With his history of health/injury problems, I’m sure he wants to max out now, just in case.

  2. operwapitsai - Jun 28, 2013 at 3:22 PM

As a caps fan. He is good, but not that good. Adding in his history I would not invest that much into him.

  3. freestyle1022 - Jun 28, 2013 at 3:29 PM

So Jacobs fights alongside Bettman to bring the cap down, and by doing that, has to break up his Stanley Cup contending team.

    1) Rask
    2) Bergeron extension
    3) Siedenberg extension
    4) Horton

Tough reality, but Horton’s most likely out

    • bekay19 - Jun 28, 2013 at 3:55 PM

why a Siedenberg extension?? he is signed….

    • nhloon - Jun 28, 2013 at 4:10 PM

Sounds like he just listed his ceiling, I would pay the man 5mm over 4 years. He is truly a playoff beast.

    • Windmiller4 - Jun 28, 2013 at 3:53 PM

So he should kill himself for asking for 6Mil? Go back to your basketball threads and leave the hockey to the big boys

  6. sjsharks66 - Jun 28, 2013 at 3:53 PM

If he did not have the injury problems, that seems fair. A physical player who can score.

  7. jpelle82 - Jun 28, 2013 at 3:58 PM

6 million is way too much, horton is not and never really has been a clear cut 1st liner. he’s a 3rd liner on some teams. not that he’s a bad player, he is just hurt a lot and doesnt jump out as a #1 winger on paper or in the stat line that you justify spending that kind of money on. he’s a role player in my eyes, nothing about him is elite. he’s being misled if he think he’s worth as much as patrick kane. marty st louis makes 5.5 million for crying out loud.

  8. dboldave - Jun 28, 2013 at 4:03 PM

Little high for someone who’s never scored more than 30 goals a year but has the talent to do so. Don’t get me wrong, he’s been great during the postseason but I don’t think he’s worth 6 mill a season.

  9. thesportsjudge - Jun 28, 2013 at 4:08 PM

Too hard to motivate on a daily basis. Dirty player at times. Can’e be the number 1 guy like someone else posted. Injury prone? NOT worth 6 mil a season, unless the cap was going up by about that much. Go sign your big contract elsewhere.

  10. hockeyflow33 - Jun 28, 2013 at 4:25 PM

I love Horton and he’s a great match here in Boston but for a guy with not only constant shoulder troubles, but concussion history too, both the length and amount are ridiculous.

He also goes through long stretches during the season where he completely disappears.

  11. 19to77 - Jun 28, 2013 at 4:30 PM

This is why the Lucic contract was a mistake. It was too much for him and set Horton’s value too. Horton’s not going to take less than Lucic to play better than he does, so when they threw $6m a year at Looch they shot themselves in the foot with Horton the next year.

Horton might have demanded this anyway. Who knows. But overpaying Lucic by that much left the writing on the wall.

  12. narfmoo12 - Jun 28, 2013 at 4:31 PM

22 points in 43 games does not equal $6M per year.

    • spitfisher - Jun 28, 2013 at 11:33 PM

neither does 6 million for only one year that Looch had 30 goals, BTW 6 or 7of them were empty netters………There lies the problem with Horton.

  13. pone27 - Jun 28, 2013 at 4:39 PM

Gets no more than 3.5 to 4 a year.

I’m a fan or Horton, but that shoulder won’t ever get better, and he is a system guy, meaning his style of play fits in Bostons system. You put him in a Hawks uni, he doesn’t perform nearly as well.

  14. LampyB - Jun 28, 2013 at 5:45 PM

Yeah no chance hes worth same as Kane and more than St. Louis!!! Let him go to FA, bruins can spend $5M and get someone equal to horton, someone with upside yet unproven in playoffs.

  15. bosoxfanpeds - Jun 28, 2013 at 7:58 PM

I’m the Bruins management, sign and trade Tuukka, Horton, and Seguin…..Get as many 1st rounders this year and next as possible….Same with Chara and Seidenberg, as many first rounders as possible with these players…..Need to get younger and quicker….If I resign anyone its Horton…..

    • dboldave - Jun 28, 2013 at 8:12 PM

And who is it that you are looking to land with all of these draft picks you are stocking up on? I don’t know why I’m playing along but I will.

      • lordstanley65 - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:21 AM

This is why he’s not Bruins management.

      • supercoop8 - Jun 29, 2013 at 10:28 AM

The worst part is that this guy is one hundred percent serious; these guys call in the local sports radio shows and usually get hung up on mid-call. My favorite was during the the cup run a few years ago guys like BSFD thought Rask should start the finals against the Canucks though Thomas was putting together a historic run

  16. ironmd778 - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:03 PM

He’s not a $6 million guy. No freaking way. Solid player and someone you’d want on your team, but he’s not up at that level.

  17. yvrmike - Jun 29, 2013 at 11:15 AM

I think he would fit in with Toronto’s plans n they would sign him for $6mil

  18. yvrmike - Jun 29, 2013 at 11:21 AM

Toronto will sign Horton I a heartbeat for $6mil. He is Carlisle ‘s kind a player

  19. snak10 - Jun 30, 2013 at 6:04 AM

Hey Nathan Horton, On your way back to earth, don’t get another concussion….

I don’t mean to sound like a jerk but that just doesn’t make any sense…
