The Detroit Red Wings are approaching a busy summer, but they slimmed down their to-do list on Friday, signing forward Drew Miller and defenseman Jakub Kindl to multi-year contracts.

Kindl, 26, receives a four-year, $9.6 million deal, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger. Miller, 29, gets $4.05 million over three years (also according to Dreger).

After bouncing between the Red Wings and the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins to begin his career, Kindl really established himself as an everyday starter in the 2013 season. He played 41 regular season games (averaging 18:33 minutes per night) and played in his first career NHL postseason, logging 17:44 per game in 14 contests. Kindl matches his career high of 13 points in 2013, doing so in 14 fewer games than he did while setting that mark in 2011-12.

Miller earns his spot thanks to his defensive play, as he only had eight points in 44 regular season games and two points in six postseason contests. His brother is Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller, who doesn’t share Drew’s jarringly gray hair.

The Kindl deal is especially shrewd by Detroit, and not just because it unleashed a current of cheesy Amazon Kindle jokes on Twitter.

Other significant Red Wings free agents include Valtteri Filppula, Damien Brunner, Gustav Nyquist and Danny Cleary.

    In Kenny Holland we trust

Yes, ok… I agree… but the same defense as last year won’t fly…. and Kindl was VERY up and down.

Ken and Mike need to get much more ‘bruin’ in the D lineup.

That’s a little less than expected for Miller and a little more than expected for Kindl. Good to see them both signed.

What do you guys think, maybe buy out Sammy and go after Lecaviler? What do we we do with Bruner?

      • hockeydon10 - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:14 PM

        Yes and No.

Sammy is a good buyout candidate. Don’t bother with Vinny. Sign Brunner to the $3M he’s looking for, 3 years max.

Good deals for team and players. Give Brunner 80% of what Flippula WANTS. Toss Filppula to the as he wants too much coin (Hudler part two). Spend 3-4M on another forward. If lecavalier would take a I Loved the Wings as a ki discount, all the better.
