PHT Extra: What will the Avalanche do with the first pick?

Jun 28, 2013, 4:58 PM EDT

Mike and Jason sit down with Kay Adams to discuss the many ways the Colorado Avalanche can go about handling the first pick overall in the NHL Draft.

Do they go with the big defenseman who grew up worshiping Joe Sakic in Seth Jones or do they go with offense in Nathan MacKinnon or Jonathan Drouin? The guys discuss their many options.

    They’re gonna take MacKinnon

They’ve already said they’re taking MacKinnon. How can you speculate on what they’ve already told us will happen? Its not even a little side comment he made; Sakic blatantly stated that they’re going to draft MacKinnon. Seth Jones will not be drafted 1st, get over it.

They haven’t said those exact words. They’ve said they would take MacKinnon if the draft was “today”, the day they said that on. Point being, it’s not a lock until they get on stage and call his name. They would trade the pick if they got a huge return and were guaranteed to pick in the top 3…4 is pushing it unless Nashville wants to send Forsberg who was our pick anyway (but traded to the Caps in the Varlamov trade) our way and probably a good roster player and/or prospect or additional draft pick. I’m not holding my breath on the pick until Joe Sakic is on stage, which means they’re making a pick and not Bettman announcing a trade of the pick. Sakic is going to be on the phone all day tomorrow trying to get a major haul in return for the 1st overall pick – we’ll see how desperate someone is for MacKinnon or Jones.

Sakic, Roy and Pracey all said that if the draft were today they would pick MacKinnon. I am sooo confused with the mixed signals coming from Denver what are they going to do?!!!

One small pucture, one giant. Nice going.

They are saying they want to take Mackinnon because they know that Florida and Tampa want him (Personally I would be fine with Drouin, Jones or Barkov). Whether they go through with it or not I’m not sure but it is forcing the other teams to pick up the phone and talk about trades.

We can come up with all kinds of crazy suggestions. Say Sakic wants to draft Jones, but by pretending to want MacKinnon, Florida makes a deal to swap picks, so Sakic gets the player he wants, plus a player, pick or prospect from Florida to pick the player he wanted all along.

Or the Avalanche has MacKinnon rated #1, Jones #1A and Drouin #1B. So he trades down to #3 and gets one of the three players he wanted, while adding some collection of players, picks or prospects that gets the Avalanche farther along than they would just drafting MacKinnon.

Without knowing how they have the three ranked internally, we can come up with all kinds of speculation that could be completely accurate or completely inaccurate.

The early narrative was that Denver was drafting Jones, the highest ranked defensive prospect, who has long-term ties to Denver. But if he says, I’m taking Jones, they get one day of nice stories in the national/local media and that’s it. By being purposely vague, we’re still talking about them. Crafty.
