Martin Brodeur wins NHL 14 cover vote

Jun 28, 2013, 6:42 PM EDT

The cover star vote for EA Sports’ upcoming NHL 14 video game came down to a goalie who had an incredible year (Sergei Bobrovsky) vs. one who’s enjoyed an amazing career (Martin Brodeur). The software giant announced that Brodeur won the cover vote on Friday, at the ripe age of 41.

EA Sports also Tweeted what the covers will look like:

source:

It seems like a throwback time for sports video game covers. Michael Jordan graced the cover of two editions of the NBA2K series while Barry Sanders will be the cover star for Madden 25 (at least on the current consoles).

Brodeur is the first goalie to be on the cover of EA’s hockey series since John Vanbiesbrouck took the honor in 1997.

Here’s the reveal trailer:

Brodeur reminds many of NHL 94, but he isn’t a member of the exclusive club of still-active players from that game; that list only includes Jaromir Jagr, Teemu Selanne and Roman Hamrlik.

NHL.com generated a great video as a tribute to the 16-bit era of games, which Brodeur often dominated :

NHL 14 will release on Sept. 10 in North America and Sept. 13 worldwide.

Any numbers as far as the vote counts?

    • einjzmolf - Jun 28, 2013 at 6:55 PM

If they released those you’d see how fake this ‘voting for the cover’ is, matt beleskey received over 100,000 votes thanks to a youtube video and was still edged out. I doubt that many people even voted period, so i don’t fall for it. Congrats to Marty though, he deserved it out of all the selections wether it’s faked or not.

    Congratulations to the GOAT

    Excellent cover choice….

If this was 14 years ago

  4. lordfletcher - Jun 28, 2013 at 7:12 PM

    Who cares…

I am a Wild fan and I wouldn’t care who is on the cover, Brodeur, Suter, Jesus, homer. whatever. I won’t lose any sleep over anything EA sports makes.

Thats disappointing. What has he done to deserve that lately?

    • nj666 - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:59 PM

Well he and the devils did win the ecf last season.

That’s BULL Fletcher. If Zach “1 Playoff Goal” Parise were on the cover, all y’all would be dancing the Macarena…

    • lordfletcher - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:02 PM

Yawn. Again, I …”I”… could care less! Clearly there are fans who do

That said, I have sadly bought this title every year since 98′ but I could maybe tell you who half the skaters who are on the cover. Half because I would be guessing the top players from the last 15 years.

congrats goes to Marty for winning the fan voting.

Hasn’t been a goalie since Vanbiesbrouck and two goalies made it to the finals? Marty is a great goalie but there is no way this wasn’t rigged. Could the NHL have released a cover of a RFA who’s been rumored to leave the league?

Will they finally have the correct stadiums for Winter Classic this coming year or are they gonna be a year behind like they have been(which would’ve been Michigan Stadium)? or just go with Citizens Bank Park again because that was the last one?

How is this going to sell to kids? Martin who? Get someone who’s going to be around for the next few years….Crosby, Stamkos, Weber etc

    • nj666 - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:00 PM

Crosby gets popped in the mouth one more time he wont be around for too many years….

  10. snipedanglecelly13 - Jun 28, 2013 at 9:27 PM

    Datsyuk should’ve won it

  11. credible316 - Jun 28, 2013 at 10:14 PM

Did you really think they would put the guy going to the KHL on the cover?
Would be pretty sweet if they put NHL 94 on the disc as well!

  12. megahockey - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:12 AM

In my opinion this is unfortunately staged by EA and the NHL who will put on the cover whoever they please. I don’t mind Marty on the cover although Brobovsky was the more worthy candidate for this year (even though he may go back to Russia). The voting process is just a clever marketing tool for the game.

is it weird to anyone else that a Penguin hasn’t gotten on the cover? I understand not everyone likes Crosby, but come on- besides him the greatest player right now is Evgeni Malkin 71.

    • einjzmolf - Jun 29, 2013 at 6:59 AM

Lemieux was on the cover in 2001. But with a comment like that i presume you think the Penguins were established in 2005.. it’s not always about the ‘best’ player.

    • nj666 - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:01 PM

I’m actually surprised they didn’t try to put a penguin on the cover this season.

  14. jonkchar - Jun 29, 2013 at 9:40 AM

no- Penguins fan since 1995, and I played NHL2K until they stopped making them

  15. Mike Williams - Jun 29, 2013 at 11:37 AM

To all of you saying the vote is rigged, RESPECT the greatest goalie of all time! You will NEVER see another goalie break his records in our lifetime.

  16. kgun80 - Jun 29, 2013 at 12:40 PM

The game was awesome and had a lot of great innovations and additions until last year… It’s like Madden now.. No innovations just 60$ for an updated roster.

    • nj666 - Jun 29, 2013 at 1:03 PM

NHL13 is a lot different than NHL12 the skating mechanics alone are completely changed.
