Lightning reportedly trying to trade Malone

Lightning power forward Ryan Malone is on the trading block, according to the CBC’s Elliotte Friedman.

Writes Friedman:

Tampa Bay would prefer to avoid a buyout payout and the Lightning are offering a draft pick as an enticement. Malone has a no-move clause in his contract until July 1, which gives him some control of the situation. It is a limited no-trade after then.

Malone is coming off an injury-plagued season in which he played just 24 games, scoring six times and adding two assists. The 33-year-old is a six-time 20-goal scorer with two years remaining on his contract, with a cap hit of $4.5 million.

His salary in each of the two remaining seasons, however, is just $2.5 million, according to CapGeek.

What level of interest might there be in Malone? Much would depend on his health. What does it say that the Lightning are reportedly willing to throw in a draft pick as an enticement?

But if his health is good, how about the Edmonton Oilers? There’s cap space available (and there will be more if Shawn Horcoff and Ales Hemsky are moved), and they could use a big, tough winger with experience.

I hope the Pens bring him back, that would be great. He was always one of my favorites, hard checking gritty player that knows his role. It sucks that he’s been hit with an injury bug recently, but when he’s on he’s really good at his game.

Agreed. They need a gritty LW to compliment Malkin and Neal. Isn’t Bennett a natural RW too? If that’s the case they could stick him on Crosbys line if they don’t resign Dupuis or he starts to decline. Sorta like what they did with Toews and Saad. Crosby seems to be a little easier to play with than Malkin so it’d be good for Bennett since the Pens seem to like him on one of the top lines. Idk, just throwin’ out some line combo ideas!

I think they could even put Kunitz back with Malkin, and give Malone to Sid. He does really good with physical forwards on his line in the past (Guerin.)
I think the Pens need to part ways with some guys and bring in fresh faces. It worries me that we have too many guys that seem okay with mediocrity. We need some drive renewed.

Problem with that is his cap hit. If they’re unable to keep Letang due to contract demands, there’s no way they can afford to take on $4.5m of injury potential and questionably production. That’s a stiff cap hit for a team up against the ceiling.

His cap hit is only 2.5

      • burgh916 - Jun 26, 2013 at 12:44 PM

Yeah, it would be tough to do, but I feel like if the Pens can part ways with certain players making way above average than their market price it could all be done. We seem to have a knack for signing average players to big cap hits that could very well be expendable for cheaper.

No, his salary’s only 2.5. His cap hit is 4.5. If his cap hit were that low the Bolts would gladly keep him.

ill bet shero would love to have ryan malone back, that kind of player, and a pittsburgh guy. but not at 4.5 mil a year. no way. if he got bought out, im sure wed probably think about signing him for a few years at 2 mil…but hes been injured an awful lot lately and hasn’t really produced enough to merit much more. that being said, thats the kind of player the pens need, big rough and tumble forward with a sweet set of hands. brian bickell is the model for that right now.

    My bad mis read

Malone would be a nice addition but I think they can get others for a lot less. They won’t be as good but they probably won’t be as injury prone. I love his size 6’4″ perfect for playoffs.

I could see MacT or Feaster having an interest in Malone. After Hall on the LW, they’ve got Smyth, Paajarvi, Jones and Eager. He’d be an upgrade on any one of those guys, if he’s healthy. And that’s the key. Is he healthy? Offering a pick in addition makes me wonder if he has chronic health issues that’s going to limit his play.

If Malone can stay healthy and score even 15 goals, he can provide physicality and leadership to the Oilers. I think he would be great addition. Like I said, health is a big question mark though…

Malone can’t stay healthy because he is s party animal…drugs and pu$$y unfortunately doesn’t lead too a healthy body
