Bruins will be unable to keep Ference

Andrew Ference will be moving on from the Boston Bruins, CSN New England’s Joe Haggerty is reporting.

Ference, 34, is a pending unrestricted free agent coming off a three-year, $6.75 million contract. With the salary cap falling to $64.3 million and young d-men Dougie Hamilton, Torey Krug and Matt Bartkowski expected to be regulars in the Boston lineup next season, there isn’t room to sign the veteran who won a Stanley Cup with the B’s in 2011.

“With the current cap, [Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli] is not going to be able to keep me,” said Ference. “He’s got to re-sign [goalie Tuukka Rask] and obviously do his side of the business.”

The Bruins also have veteran blue-liners Zdeno Chara, Dennis Seidenberg, Johnny Boychuk, and Adam McQuaid under contract through at least next season.

His name has come up in Flyers rumors (of course, whose name has NOT come up in rumors to Philly?).

Detroit could have some interest maybe?

Too bad, wish there were a way for the Bruins to hold onto him. He didn’t have the best season but he brings so much more to the team than just the stuff on the ice. He is a great locker room guy and is always doing things to give back to the community. He and his family will be missed by the city of the Boston and I hope he plays in a city where they are happy and with a team than appreciates his experience and leadership. Class act all the way and great role model for the young guys coming up on any team.

Always a good interview with 98.5 in addition to your spot on summation of this situation.

Inevitable, but it sucks. Bartkowski, Hamilton and Krug give Boston a bright future on the blue line, but it’s always a shame seeing a classy veteran have to go.

The writing was on the wall once he sat and watched Krug and Bartkowski play so well in the Rangers series. I hate to see him go, he was one of my favorites on the B’s but it’s the nature of the beast.

Best Ference moment for ALL TIME: The Wardrobe Malfunction.

I’d love to see Colorado go for him. With the changes on the coaching and management staff, the Avs hopefully are going in a new direction (‘attempting to win games’), and picking up a tough veteran would be a big help in that regard. Ference is a Cup winner, and a proven leader- really, he reminds me of the Avs new defense coach, Adam Foote. I think it would be a good fit.

I’d love to see that. Veteran presence, top-4 capable, easy for the Avs to accommodate a reasonable raise with their cap space. And the last time one of Boston’s veteran defensemen signed in Colorado worked out pretty well if memory serves. =D

        Wait, you mean Matt Hunwick?

“This can’t happen! You show two videos of Crosby feeding players in a fight! He’s supposed to be a pu**y! Better thumbs down this!”

Good guy but way too many turnovers and bad play the last couple seasons.

one of my favorite players. him flipping off montreal fans was amazing.

YES, PLEASE COME TO PITTSBURGH!!! A defensive defenseman who still has something left in the tank?! We’ll take him!

  13. beachcomber2020 - Jun 26, 2013 at 2:27 PM

A pretty good player. Not a great one. A player that seems to have a time for bone head plays. I”ll take my chances with Krug and the other young players lined up and ready to replace him.

I will always hold dear the day the Bell Centre crowd got the “unintentional bird”. Gonna miss you Andrew!

    BRING HIM TO PHILLY.

I don’t know about this…. They can’t afford 2 mil/ year if he is willing to take less? Just thinking….

Not surprised by this “news” really. I somehow think he will end up in Nashville. Don’t know why, just a fat-gut feeling.
