Report: Phaneuf in play for trade

Jun 23, 2013, 2:47 PM EDT

Dion Phaneuf AP

Right when you thought the Flyers might be this summer’s busiest team, here come the Toronto Maple Leafs.

TSN’s Darren Dreger and Bob McKenzie both say they’ve heard rumblings that Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf is available for trade. Dreger says Leafs GM Dave Nonis will trade anyone but hasn’t received calls on Phaneuf as of yet. That might change now that everyone knows he could be had.

This news comes on the heels of the Leafs dealing for former Kings backup Jonathan Bernier, a move that throws him into the mix with James Reimer for the starting job in Toronto.

There are plenty of teams who could use a No. 1 defenseman and Phaneuf fits that billing. Curiously enough, Toronto is a team that already needs help in their top-four on the blue line and dealing the team captain would have to net an upgrade there.

    Come on over, sir!

  2. jacketsfan7 - Jun 23, 2013 at 2:53 PM

I wouldn’t mind seeing him in a devils jersey , he’d make a great captain and New Jersey doesn’t have a #1defenseman who can hit , defend , and score

    • devilsarethebest - Jun 23, 2013 at 2:55 PM

Lol, we don’t have any #1 Defenseman. it goes against Lou’s master plan. But I think it’s time to change that.

      • desertfan - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:14 PM

Lou built a multi-cup winner on the back of HOF D-Man extraordinaire Scott Stevens.

Maybe you are too young to remember him or you are a Ranger- Lindros fan.

      • devilsarethebest - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:20 PM

Hmm.. have you heard of a few guys named Niedermayer, Daneyko, and Rafalski? That’s 4 core defenseman. The team wasn’t built around Scotty. When’s the last time the Devils had a clear #1 D pairing? They go with the no-name defensemen, it’s Lou’s style.

      • isithockeyseasonyet - Jun 23, 2013 at 4:11 PM

@ desertfan, are you really coming at other atlantic division teams fans? Devils are perennial playoff contenders w cups, the best goalie of all time and STILL can’t fill a stadium l, great fans (sorry actual devils fans, not trying to come at you, just this fool)

      • devilsarethebest - Jun 23, 2013 at 4:18 PM

Well we sold out 21 of 24 home games this season. Don’t think that’s too bad.

      • blackfoot11 - Jun 24, 2013 at 10:13 AM

Having Marty Brodeur in net was a luxury for Lou to go after a collection of good all-round d-man and not have a specific #1 D-man or defensive pair. Now that Marty is likely at the end of his career after next season w/o an immediate replacement, maybe Lou will look to get a few defensive defensmen with experience. Or maybe Lou makes a play for Lundqvist, if he hits the open market.

  3. Windmiller4 - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:03 PM

Gotta wonder if Philly would try to get in on this..

    • icelovinbrotha215 - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:54 PM

I would imagine. He fits the bill could replace guys like Cobi and Mesz (if mgmt feels like moving on from either one or both).

  4. killerpgh - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:04 PM

I’ve always like Phaneuf’s game. He is a legit number 1 d-man who is solid on the PK, PP and even strength. He is only 28 years old so he has a good bit of years left in him. If I was a GM of a team I would differently place a call and see what the price is.

    • reppintdot - Jun 23, 2013 at 5:08 PM

on the leafs he was basically our only above average D-man. so he played to many minutes without much help from anyone and thats whene the turnovers come. but if he goes to a team and has a good pairing i think he’ll be great

  5. 13datsyuk13 - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:05 PM

No chance he goes to Detroit with the realignment.

    • jakreidler - Jun 23, 2013 at 6:54 PM

I think Dekeyser/Playoffs have changed the wings need for a Dman anyway.

  6. sjsharks66 - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:06 PM

    Hmmm… Interesting.
Would not mind seeing him in teal, depending on what the Sharks would have to give up.

  7. jacketsfan7 - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:06 PM

Yeah , pair him with larsson and I think that’d be a good defensive pair

    • devilsarethebest - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:10 PM

That PP would be scary, with Kovy.

  8. broadstreetbeatdown - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:07 PM

    Phaneuf a Number 1 Dman…ROFL. Hes a turnover machine.

  9. tdrusher225 - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:08 PM

The Flyers seem to love defensemen who can’t play defense

  10. rushledger - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:21 PM

Florida could take him, even with all his turn over problems and other issues it still would upgrade their defense. Plus you can discredit Brian Campbell and with Phaneuf as a defense respectable Powerplay D pair

  11. nothanksimdriving123 - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:23 PM

OK, since George Armstrong handed the C to Dave Keon (and a couple of years later retired as a Leaf), who can name all the Leafs captains who have been traded away or otherwise allowed to leave town unceremoniously? Hint: Not including Phaneuf, the correct answer would be ALL of them. Keon, Sittler, Vaive, Ramage, Clark, Gilmour and Sundin.

    • devilsarethebest - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:25 PM

Well, maybe you just simply don’t understand that the master race of the NHL can do whatever they want because they’re the richest.

      • nothanksimdriving123 - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:29 PM

Good grief, devils, I lived through the Ballard era (aka the Dark Ages), so I feel quite capable of understanding what this franchise can do.

  12. 19to77 - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:35 PM

From one perspective it’s a good idea – he makes no sense as a captain. But their defense is thin even with him, and he logs over 25 minutes a night. What do they fill the hole with? Who do they get in return who can fill out the defense?

  13. govtminion - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:40 PM

He’s gotten on towards the later years of his career, costs a lot of money, and doesn’t provide the results that the team needs from him.

So, Feaster must be salivating over the idea of getting him back in a Flames sweater next year. 😉

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Jun 23, 2013 at 7:32 PM

I know you’re joking but I’ll just point out that there was a reason he was traded in such a hurried fashion from Calgary, I won’t help perpetuate the rumors but from what I gather he’s not very popular with the current Special Assistant to the GM that the Flames currently have.

      • govtminion - Jun 24, 2013 at 12:10 AM

Oh absolutely- there’s no way he ever goes back to Calgary, that bridge is burned. More just meant as a swipe at Feaster’s free-agent habits than a real suggestion.

  14. girouxed - Jun 23, 2013 at 3:53 PM

Getting this guy in Philly would be like getting another hole in your head.

  15. kingsforever - Jun 23, 2013 at 4:25 PM

Advice to other GMs: stay away

  16. teebone1976 - Jun 23, 2013 at 4:27 PM

Dion’s time with the Leafs is just about over, but he needs to be replaced before being traded, someone like Keith Yandle could replace him. (fingers crossed).

  17. 11blueshirts11 - Jun 23, 2013 at 4:36 PM

Del zotto and Boyle for phaneuf?

  18. LampyB - Jun 23, 2013 at 5:02 PM

I love the comments that mention he plays great defense! His turnover skills played a huge part in the leafs first round exit!! LOL

  19. timmeh022 - Jun 23, 2013 at 5:33 PM

    Here ya go Feaster!

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Jun 23, 2013 at 7:36 PM

Brendan Shanahan is a standup guy, he’s likely to be hired by the Flames this week, my guess is after one conversation with the Special Assistant to the GM that the Flames currently have and he’ll immediately put the kibosh on any thoughts anyone in the organization may have about bringing Phaneuf back. He could then watch film, Phaneuf hasn’t been anywhere near a top pairing defenseman since his second year in Calgary.

  20. Habib Marwan - Jun 23, 2013 at 8:02 PM

is he still dating jack bauer’s daughter?

  21. beergold - Jun 24, 2013 at 9:00 AM

Last paragraph kills me “no 1 dman”! This IS the guy that his peers rated as the “Most Overrated”
player in the NHL. He isn’t called The Pilon for nothing folks!

  22. somekat - Jun 24, 2013 at 12:34 PM

I like this guy, don’t think he’s a great player, but he’s very good. He gets more flak than he deserves because he’s the captain in Toronto, it is what it is.

That being said, he’s not worth his cap hit. Even if they are willing to trade him, I’d be surprised if they got anywhere near equal value while getting another team to eat that salary. I like the idea, if I’m a team that’s not a cup contender right now, I’m dumping every salary I can and replacing them with new guys who’s salary is more in line with the new economics. But at the same time, I understand that dumping those salaries was means I’m getting a smaller return.
