Marchand accuses ‘kitty cat’ Shaw of eye gouging

Jun 18, 2013, 4:47 PM EDT

At some point, it was assumed the two resident agitators — Boston’s Brad Marchand and Chicago’s Andrew Shaw — would get in each others’ faces during the Stanley Cup Final.

Well, they have.

On Tuesday, Marchand accused Shaw of gouging his eye in the waning moments of Game 3, when tempers flared and and referees dished out 16 penalty minutes.

“Stuff happens,” Marchand told CSN New England. “The eye gouge is what I didn’t particularly like, but it’s part of the game. I’ve got a nice little scratch mark on my forehead from the claw marks from the . . . you know . . . kitty cat.”

(Gee, think that quote might get some play?)

Marchand has been a presence in the last two contests, which may or may not have to do with Shaw’s terrific Game 1 effort. The ‘Hawks forward finished with game-winning triple-OT goal, an assist, a plus-2 rating, a team-high nine hits, one takeaway and won his lone faceoff on the evening — all in a career-high 24:03 time on ice.

Afterward, Bruins head coach Claude Julien put the performance in context.

“I don’t think we do our gameplan around Mr. Shaw,” Julien explained. “We know he’s an agitator, we know he’s good at embellishing too, at times. We know all that stuff.”

What followed were two solid performances by Marchand in Games 2 and 3. While he failed to hit the scoresheet, he was drawing and killing penalties with aplomb and being a general nuisance.

And for many, it was nice to finally see.

The first two games of the series were largely bereft of emotion and anger, as the teams combined for just 11 minor penalties (three of which were for too many men on the ice.)

Game 3, though, saw frustrations boil over — something Julien says the B’s have to keep in check.

“There are times in the game when those kinds of things happen,” he explained. “You saw it in the scrum. You saw it at different times. You have to try to keep your team in check as best you can.

“As far as I’m concerned, that’s what I’m trying to do with my team.”

Brad Marchand is the only reason I want the Blackhawks to win.

    • bruins18 - Jun 18, 2013 at 4:54 PM

And he’s really going to be one of the reasons the Blackhawks don’t win lol

      Brad “MATT COOKE” Marchand

      • sabatimus - Jun 18, 2013 at 6:46 PM

Somehow, I read the first part of your handle as “vancouver”.

      • ucaneverscorenoughgoals - Jun 18, 2013 at 6:50 PM

Nope, not a vancouver fan, or a chicago fan. Just a fan of offense.

      • pens5829 - Jun 18, 2013 at 6:57 PM

No doubt Marchand is dirtier than Cooke. He just hasn’t been called to the carpet yet.

      • sabatimus - Jun 18, 2013 at 7:04 PM

If you guys think Marchand is dirtier than Matt Cooke, you obviously haven’t watched either player.

      • ucaneverscorenoughgoals - Jun 18, 2013 at 7:12 PM

He is one flying elbow away from a mirror image. Acting as though he is in a different class is like Shanny deciding to minimize a suspension because a player didn’t get hurt.

      • drewsylvania - Jun 18, 2013 at 7:36 PM

        “one flying elbow away”

That’s like saying Lee Harvey Oswald was one shot away.

      • ucaneverscorenoughgoals - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:09 PM

Really?!….Jack Edwards tactless comparison to Sirhan Sirhan should have been enough to make anyone cringe.

I don’t think anyone should draw anymore comparisons to any other assassinations of the Kennedy’s.

        Show some tact.

      • stakex - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:05 PM

Only Penguins fans would think Marchand is a dirtier player then Matt Cooke. I don’t care for either player, but Marchand isn’t even in the same universe as Cooke when it comes to dirty play.

      • drewsylvania - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:12 PM

Ask Marc Savard how he feels these days, then consider the analogy again. Sure, it’s hyperbole–Savard isn’t dead–but his days are filled with headaches and depression.

      • live4hockey - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:23 PM

I’m a pens fan…and I would never make that comparison. Matt Cooke is the guy, that while he has seemed to clean up his game, is still the dirtiest player in hockey as his past will never let that go…I love him on the PK, but would rather not see him in a Pens uniform after this off season. Marchand is dirty, but he is not Cooke dirty IMO…He has stopped a lot of the slew foot type of stuff for the most part which he has done in the past. He had a nice little trip on Kunitz in the ECF, but that was more a trip to me than a slew foot…anyway, I would rather have Marchand on the Pens than Cooke..that is for sure.

      • ucaneverscorenoughgoals - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:26 PM

The Marc Savard hit was the Mirror image of a hit Mike Richards put on David Booth in the very same year. Both hits were legal at the time.

We’re they dirty?!….Heck yea! Does Cooke have history?! Absolutely!………So does Marchand…..and it was on display in the conference finals. The slew foot to Crosby in game 2, the knee on knee to Kunitz in game 3.

Boston fans get themselves worked up over Ulf Samuelsson’s knee to Cam Neely’s thigh back in 1992.(And it was a thigh contusion by the way because I can go find the youtube clip of cam Neely being interview about it)

But, you act as though Marchand is so different. Take off the spoked B glasses because you sound hypocritical.

      • nunan - Jun 18, 2013 at 11:47 PM

I feel sorry for people who think Marchand and Cooke are the same…you clearly watch the game with a distorted view..which sucks bc you’re missing a lot. Big difference between career-ending-Cooke and pest-marchand. Dirty is different than annoying. Cooke is dirty. Grow up

      • ucaneverscorenoughgoals - Jun 18, 2013 at 11:59 PM

Riiiiiiiiight you keep looking through your own prism.

      • nunan - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:08 AM

Wrong again. Just hitting you with factual knowledge…nothing more. Cooke and his history of dirty hits that injure is different than Marchand being annoying and NEVER injuring another player.

      • tbd3 - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:47 PM

        Marchand is a pest. Cooke isn’t a pest, he’s a thug.

      • tbd3 - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:48 PM

Actually, “thug” might not do Cooke’s cowardice justice.

      absolutement 100%, cloutier 39!
i’m not a fan of chicago or shaw, but anyone who gauges marchand’s eyes out gets my vote for player of the decade. it’s not so much about chicago winning, it’s more about boston losing–and if marchand bleeds in the process, all the better!

    • greenmtnboy31 - Jun 19, 2013 at 11:33 AM

This is great, the dirtiest rat in the league whining about someone else. You probably can’t compare Marchand & Cooke, because Marchand isn’t half as tough as Cooke, but he’s certainly right up there with his dirty, cowardly play.

If anyone deserves his eyes gouged, it’s Marchand and I applaud it. It’s also great that Shaw punched him while they were down. Those “unwritten rules” don’t apply to a guy like Marchand who slew foots and does all kinds of other cowardly stuff. He deserves every punch and gouge he gets.

Did you notice how he was holding on to Shaw for dear life knowing he would have had his lights punched out, and once he was losing his grip he did all he could to get down to the ice where the linesmen would protect him. Watch for Marchand to get crushed tonight, probably by Shaw.

      • grilledjesus - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:53 PM

Here’s greenmtnboy31s tough guy showing just how tough he really is. I think the nickname possum should be used for this clown since he did a great job of playing dead.

Oops, this time he just fell down.

      • greenmtnboy31 - Jun 19, 2013 at 4:08 PM

Wow, I have my own fan, awesome. Or is it someone stalking me? Those appear to be videos of Norris Trophy winning PK Subban!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Since this is an article on Marchand, let’s stick with this video since you have some kind of man love going for PK as he turns Bradley into Marchmallow!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • grilledjesus - Jun 19, 2013 at 4:41 PM

Nice, I like the end where they show Possum skating away from all the Bruins so he doesn’t have to actually drop the gloves. Habs poster boy that one.

      • greenmtnboy31 - Jun 19, 2013 at 5:41 PM

It just shows the Bruins don’t like good hard clean bruising hits. They are more into the dirty, cheap embellishing garbage.

Oh, and it also shows Bradley never learned lesson #1; don’t go across the blue line with your head down glued to the puck. He should learn to skate without having to actually look at the puck, but I’m guessing he worked on it after PK delivered his lesson.

  2. maalea - Jun 18, 2013 at 5:02 PM

Boy, Julien is really hung up on other team’s embellishment.

    • dropthepuckeh - Jun 18, 2013 at 5:08 PM

That quote was after game 1 – article rehashing the history. I’m pretty sure Julien is not wasting any time thinking about Chicago embellishing right now given the Chicago PP….

    • jpelle82 - Jun 18, 2013 at 7:58 PM

its what he does, its what the boston guys do. marchand saying this passive agressively after being thrown down and made to look like a punk is pretty funny though, especially since he himself is guilty of exponentially worse behavior normally. whanh montreal, whanh everyone else dives, whanh he bit me, whanh he scratched my eye….just another day with a microphone in front of a bruin.

      • drewsylvania - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:05 PM

I guess you internalized the whining?

FYI, Marchand dragged Shaw down, not the other way around. Kind of a dick move if you ask me. But Shaw one-upped the dick move by hitting him while he was on the ice.

      • ballistictrajectory - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:09 PM

        That’s very Vancouver of you.

      • mjdkid100 - Jun 19, 2013 at 10:37 AM

My favorite part of your comment is when you say “wahh he bit me,” like thats supposed to be acceptable.

Shows exactly the type of person you are and what you know about hockey.

      • cobra617 - Jun 19, 2013 at 11:19 AM

I am a Caps fan so I have no bias in this argument.
I don’t care much for Marchand at all, but to even think about him in the same category of Cooke is insane. Marchand is an agitator. He lives to get under your skin. Cooke is quite simply a dirty goon.
Also, what Shaw did to Marchand after Marchand pulled him to the ice is completely classless. You don’t throw a punch at a guy laying on the ice in a defenseless position. To me this was egregious and should warrant a 1 game suspension. As much as I would like to see someone shut Marchand up, this is not the way to do it.

      • tbd3 - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:50 PM

Marchand wasn’t the one punching a guy while he was lying on the ice. Shaw was the one who came across as a punk.

  3. pitpenguinsrulez - Jun 18, 2013 at 5:05 PM

Julien and Embellishment? The only embellishing Julien does is he embellishes himself with a box of Dunkin Donuts

    • dropthepuckeh - Jun 18, 2013 at 5:10 PM

Probably wash that down again with champagne from the Cup too.

    • savoirlaire - Jun 18, 2013 at 5:36 PM

As opposed to Bylsma, who washes his donuts down with bile and bitter tears…

      • ballistictrajectory - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:10 PM

That’s after he washes Thidney’s underwear.

    • bman7206 - Jun 18, 2013 at 5:42 PM

Too bad Bylsma didn’t have something to drink to forget about Julien completely outcoaching him and waxing his “all-star” team out of the playoffs.

    • sabatimus - Jun 18, 2013 at 7:06 PM

Yep, that just about sums up the intellectual contributions of pitpenguinsrulez. I guess his butt still hurts a lot.

  4. imleftcoast - Jun 18, 2013 at 5:05 PM

This is good to hear from Marchand. It looked like Shaw was pounding his head into the ice. Marchand can beat up on sticks, but that’s about it.

Julien should really stfu. Sick of the whining by the team getting the breaks.

    • savoirlaire - Jun 18, 2013 at 5:39 PM

Getting the breaks? Ok, that’s a nice whine with your cheese…

      • travishenryskid - Jun 18, 2013 at 5:57 PM

Bruins have caught more than their share of breaks. They wouldn’t have gotten out round one without the refs. If anyone has a gripe, it’s leaf fans.

      • pepper2011 - Jun 19, 2013 at 1:15 PM

Funny. I don’t think I heard one leafs can complaining about the refs or the Bruins getting breaks. Why is that? Cause they know hockey – perhaps the Pens, canucks, mtl and Buffalo fans could learn a thing or two.

The best part about this whole thing is how much Marchand is hated. The Salo hit was bad, but beyond that; he hasn’t done anything too egregious. The slew foot of Niskanan was lame, but he knew it and dealt with it immediately. it was a reaction play and a bad one. He is a royal pain and he gets other teams and players and fans focused on him and off their game. He has tremendous puck control (one of the best in the league for time of possession). Best part is he just turned 25 and continues to get better every year. this was his 3rd full (half) season and it seems as if he will be a 25-30 goal scorer for years to come.
He agitates, he scores, he kills penalties, he controls the puck and the game. Glad he is BRUIN. Don’t be surprised to see him on team Canada….

    • lovinthatsomanyhateonnd - Jun 18, 2013 at 6:00 PM

LMAO please..the hawks are wimps..notice, not one of them has even tried to check Lucic..they run away from him! shaw is the worst though…that cheap shot on the ice will be remembered, look for 22 in black to hold him accountable for it next game..

      • imleftcoast - Jun 18, 2013 at 7:10 PM

  9. LampyB - Jun 18, 2013 at 5:37 PM

Imleftcoast…have you watched the series at all? If so you must have missed the frequent NBC commentary on missed or embellished calls against the Bruins. This is coming from a television crew that clearly wants the Hawks to win. There have been at least three calls against the B’s for Hawks diving, flopping on the ground, or grabbing their face in agony for a nudge. The elbow call last night was definitely a penalty, but he largely missed his target and the Hawks skater immediately grabbed his own head like it was a concussion induced impact. Its part of the game, but Chicago’s been buying calls all series while the B’s continue to sacrifice the body and block shots. You know, the stuff that wins games.

    • davidmessina63 - Jun 18, 2013 at 6:09 PM

I don’t know why the Hawks are trying to get penalties on the Bruins. Have they had any shots on their power play?……Maybe a couple but that’s about it. I don’t think they had a shot on their 5 on 3. Bruins PK is a beast and the Hawks power play is pitiful.

  10. bman7206 - Jun 18, 2013 at 5:44 PM

Poor Bickell getting tossed around like a rag doll. “I crush you like bug.”

    • lovinthatsomanyhateonnd - Jun 18, 2013 at 6:02 PM

lol notice, not one of the hawks will even check Lucic..they act all tough with Marchand, but when Thorton or Lucic are one the ice they play nice..

      • 19to77 - Jun 18, 2013 at 6:35 PM

The last time someone tried to blow up Milan Lucic, he ended up out for four to six months. If a big, physical guy like Emelin just bounces off and bursts into flames, so will just about anyone else.

    • drewsylvania - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:02 PM

    • grilledjesus - Jun 18, 2013 at 8:09 PM

Seen it, one punch thrown, at Marchand by Shaw, while on the ground. If that’s “OWNED” you have a rather weak definition.

    • tbd3 - Jun 19, 2013 at 12:53 PM

Haha. You’re delusional. No one won that fight. One punch was thrown, and it was after Marchand hit the ice.

    • greenmtnboy31 - Jun 19, 2013 at 4:11 PM

You are correct of course northstarnic, that’s why Marchand immediately grabbed for the back of Shaw’s jersey and hung on for dear life. It’s what a coward does when he’s scared out of his wits.

  15. govtminion - Jun 18, 2013 at 6:21 PM

Well, at least we got in three games before the whining began… such a great series, I’d really rather it all be left on the ice instead of pulling the media-complaint crap like this. Even as a B’s fan… shut up, Marchand.

Leave the complaining to the media about how hard life is to Crosby and Ovechkin.

  18. winefool - Jun 18, 2013 at 6:46 PM

I’ve gained a lot of respect for Boston over the last three games – they are a tough and talented team. But one thing really shines through watching them – Marchand is a punk.

    • sabatimus - Jun 18, 2013 at 6:49 PM

As a B’s fan, I wholeheartedly agree that Marchand is a punk, and I would totally hate him if he weren’t on the B’s. I’m not sure I saw a gouging, though Shaw definitely violated an unwritten fight rule by punching Marchand after he was laying on the ice.

      • pens5829 - Jun 18, 2013 at 7:01 PM

Don’t think for a second Marchand wouldn’t be doing the same thing if he wasn’t trying to flop for another penalty.

it’s nice that chicago finally decided to show some emotion in this series. too bad it came with 11 seconds left in game 3. at least they lasted longer than pitt did; they couldn’t even get to the third period down 1-0 before their courageous captain completely lost it

    • imleftcoast - Jun 18, 2013 at 7:14 PM

It looked like Chicago had this figured out after Period 1 of Game 2. I’d table the gloating.

great post! You’ve pointed out the fact that B’s are in control of series and Bruin detractors have resorted to name-calling, crying like the little b*tches they are and whining about the antics of various players.

You know you’re in control of a series when 85% of the comments are from people outside of New England crying and whining about stuff that has nothing to do with who the better T E A M is.

You all can go Suck IT! Boston wraps it up in game 6 at the GAAAHHHDEN and CHICAGO and their front running fans go home crying.

Wasn’t much of a fight if you ask me. They both just grabbed on until they hit the ice and then Shaw threw a cheap shot. Both are punks. Shaw a bigger one on this particular occasion.

    • grilledjesus - Jun 19, 2013 at 9:27 AM

I really haven’t seen much of anything from Shaw in this series to consider him a punk. Besides a couple of dives I havent seen much cheap stuff from either team. It’s just a good series.

    • greenmtnboy31 - Jun 19, 2013 at 11:39 AM

Marchand is not the smallest player on the Bruins but he plays pretty big. Shaw really put him in his place. LOL..Shaw will pay for that one. I love how both these Holier than Thou, ‘classy teams’ are being show for what they are, just like everybody else, opportunists, who dive when they think it’s to their advantage and play dirty when need be. Julien and Toews both need to FOREVER shut their yaps about the play of any other team. HYPOCRITES!

Aw, how cute. A canucks fan that thinks anyone cares about their opinion.

Happy 20 years without a cup!

20 years is only half as long as the 40 years of futility for Boston.

26 Cups, which is 23 more than your bear cubs.

I hope the glow of your championship highlights in black and white keeps you warm and snug at night.

        Black & White?

Your Bruins are the team to win their first Cup since color photography came in almost 40 years ago. Notice you never see any original color photos of Bobby Orr diving through the air. Does that make Orr the original diver?
