Playoff scoring sensation Slava Voynov has signed a six-year contract extension with the Los Angeles Kings, the club announced today.

According to Lisa Dillman of the L.A. Times, the deal is worth $25 million.

Voynov was a pending restricted free agent. The 23-year-old Russian defenseman finished the playoffs with six goals and seven assists in 18 games. He also had 25 points — three more than the team’s top blue-liner, Drew Doughty — in 48 regular-season games.

Voynov’s $4.17 million cap hit is only slightly higher than the $4 million one belonging to another recently signed young defenseman, Nashville’s Roman Josi (7 years, $28 million).

The Kings still have a number of other RFAs to re-sign, including defenseman Jake Muzzin and forward Trevor Lewis.

Also of note, with the salary cap falling to $64.3 million, Los Angeles may not have room to re-sign veteran d-man Rob Scuderi, a pending unrestricted free agent.

Voynov is really a tribute to the new Kings way of doing business….drafted by Lombardi in round 2 (after he determined that Voynov would come to North America), 3 years of seasoning in the AHL, gradually working into the rotation for a championship team (and allowing the team to trade D Jack Johnson for Jeff Carter), and blossoming into a legit 1st pairing defenseman this year…..if only it worked this way with all prospects. Only issue now is whether Slava will continue to work now that he’s got the big deal; since the Kings have worked with him the last 5 years, they obviously feel comfortable that he will….

Hate to lose Scuderi, the ultimate honest workman….but there doesn’t seem to be a way to keep him under the cap. Time for Ellerby, Muzzin or other prospects to step up.

Great, i’m glad we signed Voynov for a few more years, now to get Scuderi for a few more as well!

about 1)… i said that on the Couture article…. was about to say the same on this article. here’s my thing: I know guys like long contracts…. but for an up-and-comer like Slava, why did he sign such a small contract for 6? the only thing i can come up with is that he knows he’s young enough to have high-paying years left after that. but if he/his agent were confident in him, i woulda thought they’d sign him for like 3 and see what he can pull after that. i think that guy will be that much more valuable in 3 years. that’s just this particular internet GM talking though.
