Former Blackhawks assistant Mike Haviland has been named the new head coach of the Hershey Bears, the AHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals.

“Mike Haviland has coached his teams to compete and win, and we look forward to having him do the same in Hershey,” said Bears President/GM Doug Yingst in a release. “Of the numerous candidates who applied for this position, we felt Mike was the best man to help our team push toward a 12th championship and we welcome him.”

Haviland was fired by the ‘Hawks after last season’s disappointment, but was with the team when it won the Stanley Cup in 2010. This past season, he was an associate coach of the Norfolk Admirals.

With success in Hershey, expect his name to be brought up as a future head-coaching candidate in the NHL.
