TSN may have spoiled tonight’s NHL awards

We were all tipped off about Montreal’s P.K. Subban winning this year’s Norris Trophy earlier this week, but there’s no way the other big award winners would get leaked early… Right?

On TSN’s Insider Trading segment Bob McKenzie, in speaking about Subban’s reported win, said other players were given a heads-up about who was going to take home what.

“In fact, Subban is the Norris Trophy winner. And now we’re hearing word that Jonathan Huberdeau will be in Chicago on Saturday. You can infer from that that the Florida Panther forward is going to be the rookie of the year.”

Darren Dreger followed that up saying that neither Sidney Crosby nor John Tavares would be in Chicago for the Hart Trophy award tonight and Alex Ovechkin, who is in Russia, would accept the award via video. While that’s not confirmation Ovechkin is going to win it, it’s about as close as it can get.

Meanwhile, Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston says Chicago’s Jonathan Toews kept his Selke Trophy win a tight-knit secret with his family and that award winners have known for a while that they were victorious.

If you’re a fan of suspense, this was not the year for you to have a stake in the NHL awards as the Lindsay Award and Vezina Trophy are the only two left with an element of surprise for the time being.

Who is the winner for Ted Lindsay Trophy?

    • nothanksimdriving123 - Jun 15, 2013 at 4:46 PM

      Sid Abel.

Ovechkin winning the Hart is an absolute joke.

    • sjsblitz - Jun 15, 2013 at 1:56 PM

Most Valuable player on YOUR team. Pens did fine without Crosby. Comes down to JT and Ovi. Like it or not, the Caps would be sitting dead last with Florida and Colorado if Ovi didnt have that outburst mid season. So hard to argue against him.

You’re right! John Tavares was the best player this year. You cannot compare the talent on the Islanders to that on Pittsburgh. Without Tavares, no way the Isles make the playoffs.

      • ravenscaps48 - Jun 15, 2013 at 4:08 PM

And if Ovechkin didn’t heat up, neither do the Caps!

      • valarmorghuliss - Jun 15, 2013 at 5:09 PM

And this is why it’s absolutely moronic to think that a MVP should go to most valuable to a team. That’s why their are Team MVP’s given by teams.
You could sit here all day talking about who wouldn’t have done what without who.

The Blackhawks are not winning the presidents without Toews, the Islanders don’t make the playoffs without Tavares, neither do the Caps without Ovechkin. And then there is the fact that yearly there are at least 3 goalies who’s teams wouldn’t have made the playoffs without them.

It’s beyond stupid, people basically are saying “if you’re on a great team you can’t win MVP because your team is ok without without you”

So lemme repeat once again, it’s beyond stupid, if this was the case Gretzky should only have 1 Hart and Petr Stastny 2-3. Lemieux shouldn’t have any and Yzerman should have at least 1.

It should be considered like it usually is, Most Valuable to the League, The player who was the most impressive all season long. Again, teams have their own MVP’s. Why the frack should other players and what type of team ever enter the equation?

Look at all the people slurping up Tavares, 17th in scoring, doesn’t play a 2 way game, oh but the Islanders usually suck, so lets pretend he’s MVP. Hell, Kopitar had a better year than J.T. with 5 less points.
You take one of Datsyuk, Kopitar, Eric Staal, or Getzlaf and put them on the Islanders instead of Tavares and you all would be calling for them to win MVP? Because the Islanders are considered to be worse than the other playoff teams?

MVP’s decided by who’s team would suck the worst in some sorta fantasy land of “whatifs” is a joke. The guy who actually typed “John Tavares was the best player this year” is a joke. All you who ate that crap with a spoon is a joke.

But the voters got it right, they ignored such stupid clap trap and gave it to the playoff choke artist who happened to be the best player during the regular season.

He carried his team into the playoffs down the stretch after they got off to horrible start

  3. jcmeyer10 - Jun 15, 2013 at 1:26 PM

As long they don’t leak the score of tonight’s game. I think we will survive.

    • missthemexpos - Jun 15, 2013 at 3:04 PM

I found out that it will be 3-2, but unfortunately I didn’t hear which team was the winner.

  4. Stiller43 - Jun 15, 2013 at 1:36 PM

    Ovi? Barf

  5. drone501 - Jun 15, 2013 at 1:40 PM

guess ovechkins little spurt paid off

  6. Jackson Scofield - Jun 15, 2013 at 1:44 PM

Ah, was really pulling for Saad

  7. rockthered1286 - Jun 15, 2013 at 1:45 PM

Come on! The Hart should have gone to a guy who missed a chunk of the season due to injury just because he was great before he got hurt and we can only assume he would’ve stayed on top if he didn’t get hurt! I mean assumptions should be enough reasoning to give it to him right?!

  8. mrpinkca - Jun 15, 2013 at 1:47 PM

You guys linked this video yesterday for the Crosby sucker-punch story.

  9. leeeroooyjeeenkiiins - Jun 15, 2013 at 2:54 PM

Major LOL if Ovechkin wins the MVP after sleeping through the entire first half of the season and never playing any defense even during his second half spurt which largely came against the weakest division in the league. Tavares should win and Ovi shouldn’t have even been nominated.

    • timothyhanson6152trh6152 - Jun 15, 2013 at 3:03 PM

Not playing defense huh! I’m not certain, but isn’t this the same guy who broke his foot against the Rags laying down to block a shot? And the Hart is for teams MVP, without Ovi, the Caps would have been in the cellar.

Lunacy that Rask isn’t a Vezina finalist & Lundqvist is. Name recognition only.

  11. nothanksimdriving123 - Jun 15, 2013 at 4:49 PM

Yeah, my day is completely ruined, because like every hockey fan, the awards show was the only hockey event I cared about this weekend.

What a misleading title. The NHL spoils their own awards, you know, whoever they want to win will, not necessarily who deserves to win.
