Daniel Cleary could be on his way to unrestricted free agency this summer, his five-year, $14 million contract set to expire.

But, as Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports, talks between Cleary and the Red Wings are expected to “heat up in the coming days.”

Cleary turns 35 years of age in December, and is coming off a solid performance for the Red Wings in these playoffs.

In 14 games, he had four goals and 10 points – making it his best offensive post-season since 2009.

His production this spring was made more impressive by the fact Cleary was said to be playing this post-season with a second-degree shoulder separation, as well as a fractured finger.

It is time for the Wings to cut ties with Cleary he is not a top 6 forward and the Wings have enough bottom 6 plus Andersson emerged and Helm is hoping to recover from his back problem plus Miller was just resigned, Abdelkater is not a top 6 forward either. Resigning Cleary does not improve the Wings, they cannot have the same team as last season going into next season. Tatar is also out of options, I would much rather have Tatar playing with the Wings then having Cleary taking up a roster spot.

Clearly is not a priority. Nyquist, Anderson, Kindl and Smith are. And so is Brunner.

Cleary is a guy who will not be signed by Detroit, or any other team, until the middle of August when GM’s have a better idea of where they stand in relationship to the new NHL Salary Cap for the 2013-2014 season.

Cleary will be resigned. We’ll see about Bruner. Helm may never heal.

Holland knows what Cleary brings and Babcock rewards hard work. Cleary will get a 3 year deal.

Hard work? Do you watch him on a daily basis? He is like pylon out there. Its funny he stops all the forward momentum constantly when he has the puck because he is always 2 seconds behind everyone else. He is old, slow, all he does is hold the puck on the boards and stand in front of the net aka a pylon.

Honestly no reason to resign a 35 year old guy to a 3 year contract, I wouldn’t even sign him to a 1 year deal.

As previous people have posted, Tatar, Nyquist, Andersson, Brunner and at least 10 other guys in grand rapids are more valuable then he is.

My hope is Carlo and Samulesson are bought out, no resign of Flip or Cleary. Let the kids play, plus we will have at least 6-10 million of cap space after resigning the key parts. We need a top 3 forward and have the assets to get 1 aka Bobby Ryan or Vanek. If we resign Cleary it is CLEARLY a mistake.

3 of his playoff goals were just goals that bounced off him and went in. He brings nothing to the table that the wings need.

      Sounds right to me.
