Panthers’ Huberdeau wins Calder Trophy as NHL’s top rookie

Florida Panthers v New York Islanders

at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on April 16, 2013 in Uniondale, New York.

Bruce Bennett

Jonathan Huberdeau is at the top of the National Hockey League’s rookie class for 2013.

Huberdeau, the Florida Panthers’ first-year center, was named the winner of the Calder Trophy is the league’s top rookie, after scoring 14 goals and 31 points in the 48-game lockout-shortened season.

Huberdeau beat out Brendan Gallagher of the Montreal Canadiens and Brandon Saad of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Gallagher, at the age of 21 and at a generous 5'9" tall, gained notoriety as a scrappy forward, despite perhaps at times underwhelming size, with 15 goals and 28 points in 44 games.

He also scored twice in five playoff games for the Habs.

Saad, however, has more important things to worry about - like Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final, as the Blackhawks look to take a 2-0 series lead on the Boston Bruins.

With the win, Huberdeau becomes the first Florida Panther to ever take home the Calder.
