Streit ‘excited’ that Flyers acquired him

Philadelphia couldn’t wait until the start of the free agent period to get offensive defenseman Mark Streit.

The Flyers turned over prospect Shane Harper and a 2014 fourth-round draft pick to the New York Islanders to get the rights to Streit so that they could negotiate with him before anyone else.

“It’s an exciting time for me,” Streit told CSN Philly. “Obviously I’m excited to get traded to Philadelphia. I’m not sure what’s going to happen the next few weeks — or days — it’s part of my agent’s job to work that out with Paul, but Philly has an unbelievable team.

“It’s a great franchise and a great city and it’s a hockey town for sure. The fans there are great and that’s why I always liked playing in Philly. The team is really good. It’s well-structured. It’s young and fast and it would be a great honor to play for the Flyers.”

Streit is 35 years old, but he’s still a serious offensive threat and a great weapon to have with the man advantage. He’s also got plenty of leadership experience after serving as the captain of the young Islanders.

Streit’s agent, Pat Brisson, hopes to get something worked out with the Flyers before July.

“I’m pretty confident,” Streit said of his chances of being signed by Philadelphia. “I think that maybe they need a few days or weeks, but I’m pretty positive. It’d be awesome to play for the Flyers.”

Everyone keeps commenting on how this is bad for the Flyers because of his age. I don’t care right now about his age as I’m more concerned about his defensive skills and the type of game he will bring to the D. This season he was the team leader for NY and put up impressive numbers. Adding his offense to the PP would be tremendous. If you recall a few years back when Prongs was there, the Flyers were deadly with him at the top. I think adding him to a hopefully healthy defensive core with Timo, Gross, Coburn, Schenn and Mez….I think that’s a pretty good pick up. Stop focusing on only the age. I can recall many older players, some much older than 35 that still play the game just fine.

He will still be a good player for the Flyers, especially on the PP. He’s definitely lost a step in his defensive game but is still a very serviceable d-man. I think his unimpressive #’s can be partly attributed to the guys he was playing with.

He spent a good portion of the season playing with Matt Carkner who is no special talent. The majority of the season, his partner was Brian Strait who will be a good player but was somewhat inexperienced.

Not to mention that the Isles goal-tending was pretty inconsistent up until the hot streak at the end of the season.

And to think they could have signed Matt Carle who is much younger for less money, he’s the exact same player.

      hahahaha. Good one.

They’ll probably pay less for Streit who is like Matt Carle without the horrendous turnovers and with some competence in his own end. Carle was the most useless player I’ve ever seen in Orange & Black (and I’ve been watching since the beginning). The defense was awful this year, but if they’d kept Carle it would have been worse.

Streit should be excited. He’s about to get overpaid. He’ll probably stay under the radar like the other elderly, overpaid puck moving Dman Kimo Timonen. There are so many other dogs on this team not earning their money that Streit will likely duck the negativity and anger that will accompany another cupless season.

P.S. Keep Bryz. Just keep him. The rest of us enjoy the laughs.
