AHL reportedly approves Canucks’ farm team move to Utica

Jun 13, 2013, 3:31 PM EDT

Per multiple reports, the AHL has voted to approve the Vancouver Canucks’ request to move their minor-league affiliate to Utica, New York, for next season.

What’s not clear at this point is how long the Canucks will stay in Utica. According to News 1130 Sports in Vancouver, it may only be a year.

The Canucks had been seeking somewhere to put their AHL team since purchasing the Peoria Rivermen franchise from the Blues a couple of months ago.

The city of Utica had previously attempted to attract the Abbotsford Heat, Calgary’s AHL team.

At the same time, the Canucks had explored placing the Rivermen in Abbotsford, a suburb of Vancouver. However, no deal was ultimately struck.

Perhaps Abbotsford is still the long-term plan for the Canucks.

Bakersfield, California, is also reportedly being considered.

would be great to see the farm team in the Vancouver suburbs. I guess Calgary needs a little more grease to make the switch…

Canucks AHL affiliate will be in Abbotsford sooner or later. Only a matter of time.

Not sure why the Flames would want to move the location to Utica, that’s all the way across the country, 2 flights, it’s not easy to call players up. What would make more sense is relocating to somewhere like Saskatoon, especially since the Blades seem to have issues given their inability to sell Memorial Cup tickets. However the politics (and optics) involved in that would probably cause large headaches since the Flames own the WHL Hitmen and they’d be pretty much killing another WHL team. Best case scenario would be the Blades moving to Winnipeg (True North is apparently interested in adding a WHL team) and then the Flames moving the Heat to Saskatoon.

You are giving the Flames management team way too much benefit of the doubt when it comes to their ability to make logical decisions…

From a business point of view the team is sound, they make a decent profit every year, are looked at as good corporate citizens by Calgary residents, have a full building every game (despite people having every reason not to go) and have invested in a downtown bar and restaurant and have purchased every other significant sports team in Calgary. It’s easy to take pot shots at the Flames since their hockey department have given people plenty of reasons but to try and pretend that off the ice the management doesn’t know what they’re doing would be a huge mistake.
