Agent: Fleury wants to stay in Pittsburgh

Jun 12, 2013, 6:32 PM EDT

Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury collapsed in the playoffs for the second straight year and this time he was ultimately replaced by Tomas Vokoun.

Still, Penguins GM Ray Shero hasn’t given up on him.

“I’m not getting rid of Marc-Andre Fleury,” said Shero, “provided he wants to be part of it here and come back.”

So does he want to come back? His agent, Allan Walsh, answered that question in no uncertain terms.

“Marc-Andre Fleury is a Pittsburgh Penguin, he loves the club, the city, his teammates and the fans,” Walsh tweeted. “He does not want to be anywhere else.”

Tomas Vokoun is also under the Penguins’ control, but he’ll probably fall back into the role of Fleury’s understudy.

“Fleury is our No. 1 goalie and will be moving forward,” Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma said. “He is a guy who will come back to this team.”

That effectively closes the book on this debate. At least for now.

MAF and Vokoun have the same agent.

  3. mrmidevil - Jun 12, 2013 at 7:08 PM

Fluery is horrible and should have been replaced years ago.

    • pghcityofchamps - Jun 12, 2013 at 10:34 PM

Wow seriously….what do you base that statement on??? Every year he is at the top of the NHL in wins, his save % is respectable, and his GAA is always in the 2.00’s Based on those stats, you sound like a moron or a 6 year old kid who doesn’t know a thing about hockey yet, except that his favorite team just lost and now he’s still pretty bummed about it.

      • burgh916 - Jun 12, 2013 at 11:02 PM

Sorry to burst the Fleury-jerk but…
Last season he had a .916 save percentage. He was ranked 29th in the league (about the low 20’s if you take out the goalies who only played a few games)

The year before that, .913. 41st in the league. (minus some backup goalies, about 30th in the league)

The year before that .918 for 27th (minus a few more backups maybe 18th in the league)

        Fleury’s save percentage these playoffs, .883, Vokoun’s .933.

He’s had maybe one decent year out of 10. He’s a backup on any other roster, and would be treated as such. If he took a pay cut down to around 1.5 mil, I’d respect the guy a little more. He’s NOT worth 5.7 mil/yr that was a reactionary move off of a cup win. Not smart.

      • pghcityofchamps - Jun 13, 2013 at 12:31 AM

Burgh – if you read my other comments, I said Fleury would never have a stellar save %…but his is respectable. As far as this years playoffs, he didn’t even play 2 full games, so you can’t really count
those numbers because he never had a chance to bring them down as the playoffs went along.
You know, I remember when people used to say the same thing about a guy named Tom Barrasso too when he used to get shelled with shots…he just used to say “As long as the boys give me at least 3, we will be fine”.

Your mom is horrible and should have been replaced years ago.

  4. nightfireop - Jun 12, 2013 at 7:26 PM

this is good news for flyers fans!

    • pghcityofchamps - Jun 12, 2013 at 9:57 PM

It sure is…that means more losses for the Filthadelphia Cryers next year!!! Woohoo!!! 1975

      • nightfireop - Jun 13, 2013 at 1:07 AM

        1) i’ve never seen a pittsburg fan so divorced from reality…but that’s good, i really enjoyed that 2012 beatdown you guys got, not only from the flyers players, but from flyers fan.

        2) if i read my history correctly, flyers not only won the cup in 1975, but they won before you guys.

        3) so that’s what you call flyers fan in pittsburg…….you must have worked tried really hard on that one.

      • pghcityofchamps - Jun 13, 2013 at 1:25 AM

Yeah I hear ya nightfire… guys may have liked that supposed “beatdown” you gave us last year in the playoffs, but where did you go???? That’s right….lol, just prolonged the inevitable!!! What happened in 2009 in the playoffs??? Oh yeah, speaking of beatdowns….old man Billy Guerin and Max Talbot was busy whopping your goons ass on our way to the cup. And what happened this year???? Oh yeah, we owned you again…but then again, everybody else did too…lmfao!!!! Hey, there’s always next year..NOT!!

  5. pastabelly - Jun 12, 2013 at 7:33 PM

If they feel that strongly about him, they should give him an extension.

    • burgh916 - Jun 12, 2013 at 7:45 PM

      Please no.

      • pghcityofchamps - Jun 12, 2013 at 10:07 PM

Wow…never thought I would ever call a Pittsburgh fan a “fair weather” fan. How easily you forget that if it wasn’t for Fleury, we would not have won the cup back in 2009. This guy faces more shots year after year than probably any goalie in the NHL, and last year we worked him so much by playing him so many games because we had NO CONFIDENCE in our back up, he was burned by the playoffs. Have these other prima donna net minders face 35, 40, 45 shots every night and see how their record looks. I watch games and read box scores where these guys face 18, 21, 25 shots. Our defense puts a lot on the goalies….it shouldn’t all fall on him.

      • burgh916 - Jun 12, 2013 at 10:57 PM

Ah yes, typical Fleury fan response. Not liking him makes you a “fair weather fan.” spare me your absolutely terrible excuses for the guy.

We hardly EVER give up more than 30 shots a game, I’m not sure what games you’re watching.

Lol, Fleury is the reason we won the cup… No.
If I recall correctly there were a TON of games where scores were 5-4 6-5 etc. just when we had to win, we buckled down and won. That has all since faded, just because we won a cup doesn’t mean the guy is a god, and therefor untouchable. He’s not good, get over it.

      • pghcityofchamps - Jun 12, 2013 at 11:30 PM

Hey I could care less if you like Fleury or not….I was just stating the facts. And yes, he faces 40 shots a lot of nights and in the high 30’s regularly. And actually the scores of the 2009 cup were 1-3, 1-3, 4-2, 4-2, 0-6, 2-1, 2-1….with Fleury making KEY saves in games 3 and 4 on breakaways and 2 on 1’s to keep it a one goal lead in the 3rd period. And in game 7, at the end the saves he made especially on Lidstrom with an open net to seal the cup ON THE ROAD!!!! Like I said, I think he got a raw deal this year…I agree to give him next year, if he can’t rebound and bounce back, then part ways.

      • burgh916 - Jun 13, 2013 at 12:53 AM

Thanks pghcityofchamps for at least having a fair discussion about the topic, and not resorting to just saying I’m a bandwagoner. To be fairly honest, this year Fleury looked pretty decent (obviously regular season is much different than playoffs.) but I noticed the last 2 weeks of the regular season he started to falter, and fall into his nasty habits, it carried over to the playoffs. Him and Dan both should be on the chopping block, other players as well obviously, but I seriously have a hard time agreeing with extending Dan to 2 years after really failing hard at coaching. In the real world someone would be canned with such expectations.

      • gm4602009 - Jun 13, 2013 at 12:32 AM

man go find anolther team to root for burgh916! You are the kind of fan like a steeler fan…. uh if we don’t win the cup every year or superbowl get rid of the coach and all the QB or Goalie…. Then when they suck you trash management for screwing up the team..Please… All you MAF haters when he takes us to a cup win next yr you will be the first one there on the bandwagon again..I have been a pens fan for over 25yrs. I seen bad and good. Keep as much of this team as you can. Everyone else outside of Pittsburgh talks dynasty. Some pens fans talk dismantle and start over….Really.

      • burgh916 - Jun 13, 2013 at 12:50 AM

I’m sorry that I want to see the team do well.
I was never a fan of Fleury to begin with, so there’s no bandwagon to jump back on for me.
Fleury has been seriously underwhelming. Can you name how many times he stands on his head for us, with success? Maybe a handful of games in 10 years. How about goalies like Lundqvist, Miller, Brodeur, even Luongo, and recently Quick.

The problem is we’ve been cup favorites for a long while, and yet it’s the same old ending. Time to move on… Abysmal performance on a “cup or bust” team shouldn’t warrant a 2 year extension. same should apply for single handily creating a sure first round exit by your “franchise goalie,” because he’s a headcase.

      • pghcityofchamps - Jun 13, 2013 at 12:59 AM

Thanks GM….Being a die hard Steeler, Pens, and even Buccos fan for over 35 years, I know you like myself appreciate what these guys bring night after night, considering all the rough years. I’m just glad we have ownership and management committed to assembling a winning team every year. Same goes for our football team and now the Pirates look like they are finally starting to turn the corner. And because of our SUCCESS, it resonates jealousy and hatred.

      • pghcityofchamps - Jun 13, 2013 at 1:12 AM

Burgh916 – No problem….I want the team to do well also!!! I enjoy having discussions like these to get others perspectives, but I don’t really think it was Fleury this time….the defense was horrible, I never saw a D that lets teams just skate in the zone uncontested and just set up & keep possession like they were on a power play….lol. I just saw game #1 ended after 3 OT’s….Chicago 4 Boston 3 Gonna be a hell of a series!!!!!

  6. murtdurt - Jun 12, 2013 at 8:35 PM

Flyer fans should probably be more concerned with their own goalie situation before they get too excited with that’s going on with the pens.

    • pghcityofchamps - Jun 12, 2013 at 10:48 PM

Murtdurt – your absolutely hit it right on the head!!! But Fhilthadelphia Cryer fans are more concerned about what’s going on with other teams than their own…that’s why they haven’t won since 1975….lol. Maybe if theypaid attention to their own team and their news blogs they would see that their management is up to their SAME OLD ROUTINE of trading their draft picks and prospects for “THE RIGHTS ONLY” ( lmfao ) to try and sign another 35 yr old player on the down side in Mark Streit who is going to want at least $5 million to sign…that’s why NY let him go…lol. So because of that, the Cryers have to buyout the contracts of Briere and Bryzgalov…more lost money and nothing in return…AWESOME MONEY MANAGEMENT!!!

      • Windmiller4 - Jun 13, 2013 at 1:55 AM

You’re absolutely right. I’m sure the Flyers Stanley Cup chances are determined by how concerned their fans are with the team. Thats gotta be one of the dumbest comments i’ve ever read. If you showed some class instead of just saying the same three things that all you pittsburgh fans say (Filthidelphia, Cryers, and 1975), then maybe you’ll be taken seriously.

  7. sens101 - Jun 12, 2013 at 10:49 PM

Fleury is terrible man c’mon. With that being said he deserves one more year to make it work cus the pens have a year to sign malkin and letang

    • pghcityofchamps - Jun 12, 2013 at 11:05 PM

Hey, I agree he had a bad playoffs last year…but as I said, his regular season was spectacular but because he played so many games he was simply wiped out. This year he had a good year, against the Islanders our defense those 1st two games were pathetic!!!!! Granted, he game up a couple bad goals, but a couple were weird bounces too. Then when Vokoun came in, the defense played much much better for him. If they played like that for Fleury, he never would have gotten pulled. I don’t think this year was his fault…he took a bad rap because of last year and the media magnified it big time!!!!

      • pghcityofchamps - Jun 12, 2013 at 11:10 PM

Don’t know if you heard or not but Shero signed Bylsma, Granato, and Reirdon all to extensions today. And he started talks with Malkin’s agent on a new deal. His agent says Malkin doesn’t want to play anywhere but here and will do whatever it takes to make it happen.

      • valoisvipers - Jun 13, 2013 at 9:41 AM

Come on dude, MAF has sucked in the playoffs two years straight and this year he was knocking pucks into his own net. The Pens have to keep him though as there are no viable NHL ready replacements in their system.

  8. bwomped - Jun 13, 2013 at 9:54 AM

Marc Andre Fleury’s numbers have gone down under coach Bylsma. Speaking of coach Bylsma, he needs to thank MAF for getting him to the fastest coach to 200 wins. In sports, it’s all about winning. That’s what MAF does. I love how all the fair weather fans do the,”we got the best two players in the world.” But when we lose those two never get any of the blame. Marc Andre didn’t get swept out of the Eastern Conference finals. Dan Bylsma’s coaching style leans heavy on the defense including his defensemen. Fleury has to face a barrage of high percentage shots on a nightly basis. No starting goalie in the league, besides the great Martin Brodeur, has more than one cup under their belt. If those stats(save%,GAA) are so important in determining a winner, where the hell is Hendrick Lindquist’s cup??? Mar c Andre Fleury will hoist another Stanley Cup in Pittsburgh, as long as the other five guys on the ice can get the job done.
