Report: Byfuglien weighed 302 pounds by end of Winnipeg’s season

There’s no doubting Winnipeg defenseman Dustin Byfuglien is a big guy. We saw him looking a bit bigger than normal in September at former teammate Dave Bolland‘s wedding. The summer before that saw him arrested for drunken boating and weighing in at over 280 pounds.

Fast-forward to today where the Winnipeg Free Press’ Gary Lawless opines about Byfuglien weighing in at 302 pounds at the end of this season. Lawless says GM Kevin Cheveldayoff has a harder job to do now because Big Buff won’t stay slim.

No, the Jets can’t dump Byfuglien on someone else’s lap unless they are willing to accept a deep discount on the return. Not now.

Cheveldayoff’s best bet is to turn the trick no one has been able to — that’s to somehow reach Byfuglien and get him into shape and playing a more disciplined game.

The validity of that number is in doubt, however, as Lawless cites’s Pete Tessier as the source of the information. That site’s reputation isn’t exactly pristine when it comes to information but Lawless puts himself on the line to back him up.

That said, if Jets management isn’t aware that this is how things go for Byfuglien (bulks up in the offseason, gets in shape during it) then perhaps they need to move him just to spare themselves of frustration. As it is, Cheveldayoff and the Jets might not have to look so hard to find a team willing to add a player of his talent.

he would have to be the heaviest in the league at 302 – chara only weighs 260, john scott is 270. i cant think of anyone else even close to 300. thats ridiculously heavy for 6’5 – thats offensive lineman size.

Chara and Scott have that slender athletic build. Byfuglien seems thicker but I agree that 300 lbs seems like an exaggeration.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe in the off season he should play in the CFL?

this clown was a one hit wonder for the playoffs a few years ago…. after he basically whored pronger, he fell into nobodysville

This sounds… familiar. Did Biff play for the Raiders a few years ago?

Bite the bullet do jot play him. Sitting on the bench makes an athlete…..Big money leads to big trouble, let him sit or a fungus will destroy the rest of the team

    He’d fit nicely in Philly

….what with all the cheesesteaks and such.

    • massconn72 - Jun 11, 2013 at 3:01 PM

Much bigger, and he won’t fit through the doors.

    • drone501 - Jun 12, 2013 at 12:49 AM

yeah, right. aren’t you tired of enough horrible player movement by holmgren

It’s no wonder they call him Big Buff

The Flyers played the Jets towards the end of the season and it was obvious that Big Buff wasn’t exactly buff. In the broadcast intro it’s common for them to show players lacing up their skates, and they panned to Byfuglien, without his shoulder pads (wearing underarmour), and he looked much, much larger than usual. He could be one of the best players in the league if he could just keep his weight around 260. But if this somehow reduces his price I’d love to have the Flyers take a run at him.

The Caps will give Jeff Schultz for him straight up!

Gary Lawless looks like he was pushing 302 at the start of the season.

there was a problem with his weight while he was a BLACKHAWK . the summer before the 2010 HAWKS cup season a trainer was sent to him to shape up and quell his weight problems or else …bye bye . sadly the guy is a food junkie. it wouldn’t be the first time an athlete lost his or her career to an adiction of one kind or another .
