Oilers say they’re very close to hiring new head coach

Rumors are swirling about the Edmonton Oilers hiring Dallas Eakins, but it appears that announcement won’t come until later.

During the press conference to announce the firing of Ralph Krueger, new Oilers GM Craig MacTavish admitted that the team is “very close” to signing an unnamed candidate, but not enough to announce a deal.

Considering the fact that Oilers are about to hire their fourth coach in five years, it’s probably worthwhile to ask if Eakins or some other coach will get the chance to choose his assistant and associate coaches. MacTavish was coy about that.

“I’m hopeful that our current staff will be retained but it will be up to the new coach,” MacTavish said.

TSN’s Darren Dreger ranks among the media members who expect Eakins to be announced as the team’s newest bench boss sometime next week.

If it comes to pass, it will present a fascinating scenario: arguably the most-hyped young head coaching prospect would guide one of the most-hyped groups of young players in the NHL.

Here’s a Getty Images shot of Eakins, in case you want to size up the (potentially soon-to-be former) head coach of the Toronto Marlies:

MacT appoints himself! (I wonder if he’d do that.)

You beat me to it! After all, I’m pretty sure He would be on the same page as himself. Would be incredibly stupid, but hey so was hiring him as gm.

It would be the best place for Eakins, as much as everyone loves a new and exciting young coach I don’t think it would be fair to him to dump right into the middle of the media sh*tstorms that are Vancouver and NYC.

I was hoping wolverine would go to Vancouver. I’m thinking gillis wants the kings assistant though. Otherwise they prob woulda made the move for Eakins already.

“the (potentially soon-to-be former) head coach of the Toronto Marlies” – at this coach burning rate of Edmonton, Eakins is probably also “the (soon-to-be former) head coach of the Edmonton Oilers”…

since he has other options eakins should demand he picks his assistants. he does not want to start off badly with lame ex oilers . who only can get jobs in deadmonton because they will work for cheap. will be fun to watch how few of oilers respond yakapov, dubnyk, hall etc to eakins in your face style. hopefully he will be on them like his was kadri see how they respond.,

I was really hoping Dallas Eakins would end up in Dallas. It seems like destiny.
