‘Yotes Russian prospect signs with KHL club

Jun 3, 2013, 12:39 PM EDT

Phoenix defenseman Maxim Goncharov has signed with KHL club SKA Saint Petersburg, according to Yahoo!’s Dmitry Chesnokov.

Goncharov, 23, was taken in the fifth round (123rd overall) of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

He entered the draft as the eighth-best European prospect — the second-rated European defenseman — and proceeded to score five goals in seven games for Russia at the 2009 World Juniors, leading the tournament in goals by a blueliner.

His time in North American has not been as successful.

He’s failed to play a single regular season game for the Coyotes (the accompanying picture was taken from a preseason contest), spending all his time with AHL affiliates San Antonio and Portland.

Last year, he had 2G-13A-15PTS in 44 games for the Pirates.

draftees signing with KHL clubs is becoming a serious problem. teams are essentially wasting draft picks on Russian players who more than likely wont ever play for an NHL team because they are going to sign with a KHL club.
the league needs to address this problem quick, as teams who draft these guys are essentially pissing away picks, many times they got those picks in exchange for players or as part of a trade deal.
if the league wont do something about it teams will just have to stop drafting Russians completely…

The thing, I think, hearing from the Russian sources I have (probably the ones most of you have too), is that the Russian players are playing a very sleepy brand of hockey thinking that style of hockey will get them to the NHL. When they get over here, many of them don’t realize how much more technical and skilled many of the North American players are, and how technical the North American game has become.

It’s like a BPL fan thinking the England National Team should romp to a World Cup win being extremely predictable.
