Video: Breaking down Boston’s first-period dominance

Jun 3, 2013, 9:33 PM EDT

Whether it was Marc-Andre Fleury or Tomas Vokoun in net, the Boston Bruins made the Pittsburgh Penguins look silly pretty frequently in the first period of Game 2 on Monday.

How much of it comes down to mental mistakes and X’s and O’s, then? Mike Milbury and Jeremy Roenick break down the Penguins’ miscues and the Bruins’ opportunism in the video below:

  1. amityvillefun - Jun 3, 2013 at 9:43 PM

Penguins so need the humble pie.

Gretzky had class. Most of the real superstars do. Crosby doesn’t. He presents himself as a complete twat.

    • bobwsc - Jun 3, 2013 at 9:45 PM

      Word

    • atwatercrushesokoye - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:02 PM

That is an insult to twats sir, and I won’t have you slandering their good name like that.

      • amityvillefun - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:08 PM

I duly apologize to all the twats I may have offended.

    • joeonion - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:47 PM

      Twit, my good man. Twit.

      • amityvillefun - Jun 4, 2013 at 12:03 AM

Nope. I had the correct word I was looking for. Yup. That’s the one.

  2. thebigtim2012 - Jun 3, 2013 at 9:46 PM

C’mon Crosby had a superb play in the 2nd period, you know the one when marchands stick touched his legs and he slammed into the ice.

  3. pitpenguinsrulez - Jun 3, 2013 at 9:46 PM

I would make a comment about what the Pens need to do to fix there pathetic plays but with the amount of stupidity and trolling on Penguin articles ill refrain because all you will see are thumb downs👎👎

    • poonerman - Jun 3, 2013 at 9:53 PM

      sounding kinda butthurt there sparky

    • biasedhomer - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:11 PM

Well, before this series, when I said Vokun would not keep it up and Rask would bounce back, every single Pens fan started attacking me. We’ll now we know who the homers really were.

      This series is over.

  4. amityvillefun - Jun 3, 2013 at 9:47 PM

    Toronto at least tried.

  5. ironmike778 - Jun 3, 2013 at 9:56 PM

Who would have thought the Bruins toughest competition would be the Leafs!! Rangers were a joke and the Penguins look like a bad men’s league team.

    • jimthebear - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:22 PM

The Rangers lost quick but made a game out of all 5..

  6. bensawesomeness - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:01 PM

Doc : ” Anything strike you about the score? (4-1 at the time) ”
Eddy : ” No not really.”

holy crap get that guy off the air before i go crazy

    • einjzmolf - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:04 PM

They sound so sad having to call the bruins dominate their favorites. Dupuis got a pretty weak chance im the slot just now and Doc got SO excited. It’s pretty funny. Big bad bears had themselves a nice penguin dinner tonight.

      • bensawesomeness - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:09 PM

Usually i find that Doc does a pretty darn good job overall, but Eddy and Pierre are pretty pitiful at their jobs more often than not

  7. jhuck92 - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:04 PM

Are the Penguin goaltenders playing injured or something? I haven’t seen bad goal tending like this at home since the Flyers were playing. It’s already 5-1 at the beginning of the 3rd.

    • biasedhomer - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:12 PM

Actually, last years Pens goalie situation was worse.

    • pens5829 - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:22 PM

If you actually had a clue, you might understand that most of this has nothing to do with the goalies.

      • jhuck92 - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:33 PM

So tell me, as a Penguins fan, what do you think the problem is besides the high flying Bruins offense? I don’t see Crosby showing the leadership that he’s known for. And BOTH Vokoun and Fleury got pulled this postseason. That can’t be good for their confidence. You could almost see them visibly shaking tonight.

      • hockeyflow33 - Jun 4, 2013 at 1:44 AM

The complete lack of defensive awareness isn’t helping

    • jimthebear - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:23 PM

No, Pitt just can’t compete with the high powered offense the Bruins play..

  8. amityvillefun - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:06 PM

Ok Pittsburgh, just to show we’re sporting, we lend ya Khudobin since it seems you are fresh out of good goalies.

  9. jimthebear - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:06 PM

So, how again can the Bruins compete offensively with Pitt? Still say Pitt in 4.. Sweep away the Bruins..

  10. amityvillefun - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:06 PM

Ok Pittsburgh, just to show we’re sporting, we’ll lend ya Khudobin since it seems you are fresh out of good goalies.

  11. jeff2000m - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:10 PM

    Hey pitt, shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh……

    • pens5829 - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:23 PM

      Hey Jeff’2000m. Is this a 2-game series?

      • jeff2000m - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:36 PM

        Shhhhhhhhhhhh…………goodnight

  12. poonerman - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:12 PM

Just to show there’s no hard feelings – no charge for the lesson.

  13. jeff2000m - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:12 PM

Headline should read “breaking down bruins SERIES dominance”

  14. miketoasty - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:14 PM

Look early that class, Lucic obviously interferes to prevent a 2 on 1 that argues with the ref before the plays done. But I’m sure we won’t hear a word about that.

    • jimthebear - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:17 PM

Don’t need to Pen fan, he went to the penalty box, but then again, you can’t score on the power play anyway.

    • poonerman - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:18 PM

      grabbing at straws.

      • drewsylvania - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:41 PM

        Exactly.

  15. malkinrulez - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:14 PM

Bruins have earned first 2 wins. Series over I wouldn’t be so sure.

    • jimthebear - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:18 PM

How is Pitt going to be able to compete with the Bruins high power offense?

  16. miketoasty - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:15 PM

Look at that class, Lucic obviously interferes to prevent a 2 on 1 that argues with the ref before the plays done. But I’m sure we won’t hear a word about that.

    • girouxed - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:18 PM

There are so many things the Penguins have done all year that have gone “unnoticed”

      • miketoasty - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:19 PM

I thought the regular season didn’t matter in the playoffs?

      • pens5829 - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:24 PM

Coming from a Flyer fan means NOTHING. Go to bed. Don’t you have early tee times tomorrow?

    • jimthebear - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:19 PM

The only thing toasty is the red light behind either Penguin keeper..

      • miketoasty - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:21 PM

Good one but you do realize that the tempature needed to keep the ice frozen would ensure the light would be cold even if it was on the entire game. Nice try though.

      • drewsylvania - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:42 PM

Even the Pen fan comebacks are weak right now.

  18. girouxed - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:17 PM

Here we go, theyre starting to get fussy!!

    • miketoasty - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:18 PM

Heh, tired of golfing already? Oh and you’re one to talk with Giroux on your team.

      • girouxed - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:21 PM

Tyler Kennedy has a ferret face.

      • miketoasty - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:22 PM

Voracek is ugly as sin, what’s your point?

    • jimthebear - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:20 PM

I’d say bi-chy better describes The girl Cindy Crosby. Must be Premenstrual Syndrome kicking in early.

  19. jimthebear - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:26 PM

DUMBEST comment I’ve heard all game… No shortening the bench by Julien here at this point of the game.. Well, um…. THEY ARE WINNING BY 4 with only a few minutes left… Do they need that 6th goal for some record? Maybe get Marchand the hat-trick? WHY ON EARTH WOULD THEY SHORTEN IT? Maybe to rest Chara or Kreji? that’s about it..

  20. jimthebear - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:28 PM

Look at all those empty seats against the glass with 5 mins left…

  21. jimthebear - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:30 PM

Is this where Crosby starts the cheap shots? Them darn Zebras got him again…

  22. cdoyle444cdoyle444 - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:30 PM

    BOSTONSTRONG

  23. jimthebear - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:31 PM

    New nickname Syd the skids..

  24. ryanw822 - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:40 PM

Will Sid be the first NHL player to come out b/c it appears he likes getting it rammed up his ass.

  25. bruinsyea - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:05 PM

Peter Chiarelli “I’m sorry Jerome… The deadline is over you can’t change your mind.”
