Crosby blames officials for wild second period

Jun 2, 2013, 12:35 AM EDT

Things got pretty nasty between the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins, especially late in the second period of Game 1 on Saturday, as you can see:

Instead of blaming controversial checks, Sidney Crosby pointed his finger at the officiating crew. He told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Shelly Anderson that they let the contest spiral out of control.

“They’re letting a lot go out there, and the more it gets like that, the more it’s going to escalate,” Crosby said. “You can only control and channel that stuff so much. You keep letting guys do that stuff, you’re just going to push the envelope. That’s something we obviously want to stay away from, but it’s kind of a natural thing when it gets like that.”

The 25-year-old indicated that there might have been a lack of clarity in what was allowed and what would be penalized.

“It was just hard to gauge,” Crosby said. “Interference calls where you barely catch a guy, and then you’re allowing punches to the head. Are we going to play, or are we going to call those little things once in a while? It’s hard to get a temperature on the game when that stuff is going on. Then you let a few of those go and everything starts getting out of hand.”

Still, he ultimately came to the same conclusion that many likely did at home.

“We’ve just got to focus on playing.”

Serious Sid ? You slash , you mouth off to the tree known as Chara , and have the balls to whine ? Please. Notice no whining about Cooke’s hit. Right or wrong call, Cooke will get no benefit of doubt. Kudos to previous poster who mentioned at least malkin has stones to throw down.

Bottom line .. You don’t score you don’t win Sid. Complain all you want. If game was too rough for you, can your team not adjust ? Or are we all in the dark about the secret Pens coronation ?

Earn it Sid … You are a hell of a talent. Stop the whining!

    • killerpgh - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:21 AM

Kind of funny how Crosby has 6 career NHL fights and Malkin only has 4. And somehow you think Malkin has the balls to throw down and Crosby doesn’t. I guess uneducated fans just need to make up reasons to hate Crosby.

      • tdrusher225 - Jun 2, 2013 at 12:26 PM

No one needs to make up reasons to hate him, they’re all right in front of our face. He is the biggest whiny baby I’ve ever seen on the ice, he is the master of embellishment (even though he was shockingly worse when he first entered the NHL), and he is in the middle of more slashing, chopping, and whacking than anyone on the ice, yet he is calling for the refs at every turn. He should probably stop going after 170lb goaltenders, and focus on how badly he’d get destroyed if there wasn’t a ref between he and Chara. Love his talent, but he deplorable.

      • coronakid76 - Jun 3, 2013 at 8:00 AM

If you notice, Crosby waits until there is an official inbetween he and this opponent. Crosby never goes toe to toe with anybody as he needs his out cause he will get FU!@#D up. He is a better actor then fighter. I hope the didn’t count last year as a fight when he mugged Giroux after the official bear hugged him so he couldn’t swing back. Malkin at least went after the guy without any protection by the zebras!!!

    • jules106 - Jun 3, 2013 at 2:51 PM

Bruins get away with murder. Crosby has more talent in his little finger than any Bruin player past or present. refers are becoming like baseball umpires have there own rule book sick of watching hockey…..

    • dabigh - Jun 7, 2013 at 12:49 PM

Everyone knows the bruins are cheap shot artists with no class and they are proud of it to boot, LOSERS!

  2. wisdomnfl - Jun 2, 2013 at 10:33 AM

People who complain about Crosby are a bunch of loser girls who know nothing and live with their parents in the basement. They earn minimum wage

    • drewzducks - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:16 AM

You just described half the population of Pittsburgh.

      • drone501 - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:48 AM

come on down to the consol and say that. chances are very good they fish your ass out of the allegheny. hell, i even pay for your bus ticket since your probably to stupid to pass a driving test. but then again, ducks can swim.

      • whatdapuck - Jun 2, 2013 at 12:55 PM

It’s “too stupid.” And that’s exactly how you look right now.

      • drewzducks - Jun 2, 2013 at 2:00 PM

drown501…I surely couldn’t find a direct flight into your hayseed little town. And as far as throwing me in the river, isn’t that where they found Mike Webster after the Rooney’s discarded him and his cardboard box. That’s ok. Cheer up. You always have the steel industry to fall back on because you certainly can’t fall back on your education as is evidenced from your multiple grammatical mistakes. As YOU would say, ” your two stupid”.

      • drewzducks - Jun 3, 2013 at 3:55 PM

Wow, such an intelligent response. But I’ll keep it at your juvenile level. Sounds like you have Sid’s vagina in yours.

    • mikep363839 - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:19 AM

People who use links to make joke are losers. If u read ur comment carefully you sound like the girl, sir. Then again, you obviously have the hots for Crosby…

      • thesportsjudge - Jun 3, 2013 at 12:52 AM

@drone501: Well, capitalizing counts, so uh, yeah. The fact it took you 7 hours to reply means the grammar should be perfect as you had time to find an intelligent person to proofread it for you.

  3. REDSKINSFORLIFE - Jun 2, 2013 at 10:44 AM

mrmidevil is the biggest scum bag on here. Making jokes about the marathon bombing is NOT funny. Fans like you make it easy for the pens to be despised.

  4. phillyphannn83 - Jun 2, 2013 at 10:47 AM

Yeahhh!!! Now THATS what a quality captain does!!! Deflect the blame. Bravo Sid!

/s (because those of you in Pitt aren’t too swift)

    • pghcityofchamps - Jun 3, 2013 at 2:21 AM

Oh right phillyphann….we all forgot that the “Cryers” are experts at quality captains…..Claude the clown, Eric the Goon Lindros, Bobby dirtbag Clarke. I got those names from the executive board of the Dirty Players Club. And the best part of all these Crosby bashers and haters are….if he was acquired by some miracle to play for your greaseball classless organizations, you would welcome him with open arms and worship him as the second coming….you two faced hypocrite assclowns!!!!

      • jrhawk - Jun 3, 2013 at 10:04 AM

Second coming??? Only in YOUR mind.

  5. cadlow - Jun 2, 2013 at 10:54 AM

Pittsburgh made the same mistake every finesse (Motreal, Tampa Bay, Vancouver and now Piitsburgh) team makes against the Bruins.
They try and play them physical. One of the NBC analysts said it best “leave them alone, do not initiate contact. At times they will go to sleep.” It can’t be explained but there is truth in the Boston saying of “Don’t poke the Bear”. So as a B’s fan my advice to pittsburgh: “don’t change a thing keep trying to be the bully on the playground. Every team that tries to play the B’s like that, “get the bear.”

  6. gizzmonic - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:02 AM

He is just workin the officials for game 2. Had the penns won the game he would have called it playoff hockey where everything gets amped up. Smart move on his part, but I hope the official se through it and make he and his team work for a trip to the finals. And whats with giving rask a hard time for? Rask should have fought him if Sid wanted it so bad. Sid gets the box for 5 and the bruins send Camble for 5.. Nice trade off.

  7. valoisjoeybfeld69 - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:22 AM

Yes! Crosby complains too much, however, his post game comments are bang on. The refs are there to make sure players don’t take matters in their own hands. They’re given rule books and a whistle to make sure they keep the level of emotion in check. If they perform their job poorly then players will get frustrated and then stuff happens.

    • davidmessina63 - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:31 AM

It’s hypocritical. He does exactly what he complains about. He has the repuation as a whiner. Cooke has the reputation as a goon. Cookes rep did not favor him in not getting a call. Complaining when you have a rep for it will not help in game 2. Play the game like a man and not a child.

      • valoisjoeybfeld69 - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:37 AM

what’s your point? Babcock complained about the refs in the series vs the Hawks. Are you telling me real men don’t complain? Complaining about the refs is as old as the game itself. Big f deal!

      • pghcityofchamps - Jun 3, 2013 at 12:02 AM

DavidMessina – you actually called Crosby a hypocrite? Do you watch Pittsburgh games? Or do you just see a game here or there whenever they are nationally televised? Because if you actually watched Penguin games religiously, you would know that Crosby gets hit and slashed and mugged up more than anybody in the NHL every single game everytime he takes the ice! He gets hit, knocked down, sticked up high, but he gets right up and keeps playing….very rarely will he retaliate….but sometimes he will, and most of the time when he does, he gets caught…lol. But a cryer…NO WAY!!! He is as tough as they get….I have never seen him back away from any challenge or anyone.

    • isithockeyseasonyet - Jun 3, 2013 at 9:54 AM

You watch pens games religiously and you’ve never see. Crosby back down? Hmmm

  8. davidmessina63 - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:27 AM

I can help here. If you Penguins fans think it was the refs fault that the Pens lost the game you can dial Whine One One and they will send the waaaaahmbulance for you and Crosby. Man up.

    • killerpgh - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:34 AM

Are you really that stupid? Where did Crosby say the reason the Penguins lost was because of the refs? He was answering a question about way the after the whistle activity started picking up and he answered with because the refs were letting things go.

      • davidmessina63 - Jun 2, 2013 at 12:17 PM

Can you read? Did I say in the above post that Crosby said it was the refs fault. No. I said the Penguins fans. I’ve read more penguin fan posts about how it was the refs fault. It’s your fan base buddy.

    • drone501 - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:51 AM

that was very good. bet it took you hours to think that one up. idiot.

      • davidmessina63 - Jun 2, 2013 at 12:23 PM

It was quite good wasn’t it. Not quite as good as Bruins blanking the Pens 3-0 at the Consol but pretty damn good.

  9. billsboy88 - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:42 AM

I was right, this instantly became one of the most highly commented articles on this site. Mostly because of the horribly misleading title. I doubt most of those who commented so far have even read the article.

    • drone501 - Jun 2, 2013 at 6:42 PM

best of 7 series davie boy.

  10. deesh138 - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:43 AM

People really need to settle down. Reporters asked him a question and he answered. Is it his fault that 10x more people ask him questions? Boston won due to awesome defensive plays and due to rask. That being said it was not a tightly officiated game. Stop whining about how a person answers

    • drone501 - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:58 AM

deesh, you have suddenly become the voice of reason.

  11. daveydawg - Jun 2, 2013 at 12:30 PM

Reading how much everyone hates this skank has been very therapeutic, thank you

  12. alwaysgame7 - Jun 2, 2013 at 1:18 PM

Yep refs definitely decided this one…. That’s why neither team had a power play goal…

First game I’ve seen that was officiated well… Yes there were missed calls but the calls were consistent. Lost some respect for Crosby with all the whining that went down. He’d have more fans if instead of whining he kept his head in the game and put the puck in the back of the net. Things go wrong and it’s like he’s the child mommy took the toy from- rage fits.

Also I like how a pressure cooker joke is permitted but I’ve had 3 non explicit comments removed because it disagreed with an article…

Stay classy Sid, Pittsburg, Cooke, PHT

    • gfyu - Jun 2, 2013 at 9:17 PM

He was a better Lady Bing Trophy candidate when hiz jaw was more wired shut Cryosby waaaaaaaaah 3-0

    • pghcityofchamps - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:24 PM

Alwaysgame7 – do you really believe the game was called correctly or evenly? I am not saying it was the refs fault that the Pens lost, but it definately was not called fairly. I agree Cooke deserved a penalty for his hit, but it didn’t warrant an ejection….you and I have both seen much worse hits from behind. Then Marchand hits Neal the exact same way but only gets 2 minutes…that’s even called? On a clearing attempt out of Bostons zone, Ferrence flipped the puck to try to get it out, Orpik jumped to try to knock it down, on his way down he bumped a Bruin skating out of his zone and he was called for interference, yet later Boston starts to break into the Pens zone on a 3 on 1 when Letang tried to jump in and help and he purposely got cutoff and knocked down to the ice right in front of an official and no call made. That was Crosby’s point….IF YOUR GONNA CALL THEM FOR ONE, CALL THEM FOR ALL

  13. nyrnashty - Jun 2, 2013 at 2:45 PM

People don’t hate Crosby because he’s good, it’s because of the Sean Avery type of things he does when things aren’t going his way. He bumped Rask for no reason last night at the end of the period and I’m not sure what he was thinking when he decided to start with Chara. He should ask Max Pacioretty what happens when you mess with him. Chara took it light on Pac and look what happened to him and that was like a month or so after he messed with him after scoring a goal in OT. Chara can put Crosby out of the league forever without hardly trying. Crosby just needs to settle down and play his game. Getting involved in the Avery type stuff isn’t helping his team.

  14. bruinsfan1953 - Jun 2, 2013 at 4:39 PM

I think Crosby still has concussion symptoms , he seems very confused

    • drone501 - Jun 2, 2013 at 10:22 PM

      as confused as savard? lmao

      • pghcityofchamps - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:33 PM

Drone….man, don’t lower yourself to that idiots level by making fun of someone’s injury. You know how we felt about Sid when he was hurt, not knowing if he was ever coming back. Let that jackwad have his fun now….you know we will rub his face in it when we are moving on for the cup!!!!

    • drone501 - Jun 2, 2013 at 10:23 PM

      does savard still drool?

      • taypax - Jun 3, 2013 at 11:14 AM

you’re beyond pathetic making a comment like that…the guy’s career is over, and you make a joke about it? i doubt even a Habs fan would do that, just show what kind of scum Pens fans are

    • pghcityofchamps - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:44 PM

Real classy there douche bag….do you also make fun of handicapped people and special needs children? You probably abuse animals too don’t you clownass. Its idiots like you that turn good sports banter between die hard team fans into that kind of B.S. crap.

  15. gfyu - Jun 2, 2013 at 6:42 PM

The Bzzz the Bzzz vs the cry-osby babies, all over the Internet they cry and why? they got shutout by someone whom they underestimated, the Whole Bruins team. The Bzzz forecheck along with dump and chase had the Pens icing the puck alot also the Pens can’t / won’t defend the front of their own net, just interested in their breakouts (cherry picking Crosby – Malkin types) which the Bzzz almost capitalized on four or five times (breakaways & two – three on ones. BRUINS R STRONGER nutty said …

  16. johnnyd76 - Jun 2, 2013 at 10:14 PM

I was a high school basketball official for 12 years. When things go south for a team, the coaches/players/fans always blame the “ref”.

That being said – I am a huge PENS fan. However, I do not agree with Sid’s assessment. Sid was trying to stir the pot to motivate the team. I’m all for that (they needed some motivation) – but do not blame the officiating. I understand what you did and why you were doing it. Just admit you were trying to rally the troops and move on – we all will have more respect for your reasoning – but please do not blame the refs because it makes you and the team look bad!

  17. pghcityofchamps - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:03 PM

Are you kidding me? Did you watch the same game as I did? Granted the Pens lost 3-0, but the outcome could very easily have been very different. So if I was you Bruin fans, feel lucky with the victory, shut up and move on to the next game because if you recall the Pens threw the kitchen sink at Rask …..hit the pipe at least 4 times, Malkin slid one under him that just trickled along the goal line and out the other side, and numerous open shots from the slot sailed over or wide of the net. And Boston had NO RESPONSE to that onslaught!!! Any Pens fan knows that this team after an extended layoff without playing doesn’t come out sharp….that why they’re not worried. But what I would be worried about if I were you is the Islanders did the same thing to the Pens in the 1st round and it pissed them off and woke them up….and you see what happened after that. Well, last night you guys did nothing but make us mad and wake us up…..LOOK OUT A**HOLES…..The crybaby and his crew is gonna run wild on you!!!!
    LETS GO PENS!!!!! 1975. LMAO!!!!!

    • thesportsjudge - Jun 3, 2013 at 12:58 AM

Feel lucky? So if/when Pitt wins a game should they “feel lucky?”

Why are people bringing up the long layoff for the Pens? Did Boston only get 2 days?
Would you rather the Pens not have time to rest and heal up? You can’t walk on both sides of the fence.

      • dabigh - Jun 7, 2013 at 12:53 PM

bruins re grouped from barely winning against a WEAK Toronto team! Pens cooled off and lost threi mojo, plain and simple

    • bbk1000 - Jun 8, 2013 at 7:00 AM

      I’m not sure what’s funnier.

      this:

      “pghcityofchamps”

      or this:

“A**HOLES…..The crybaby and his crew is gonna run wild on you!!!! LETS GO PENS!!!!! 1975. LMAO!!!!!”

  18. papajack1259 - Jun 3, 2013 at 6:53 AM

Let’s be honest who would not want Crosby? you would be a fool not too…..I would despise the ball of hate Marchand if he were on the other side of the fence…
Shero was the Architect of the Broad Street Bullies and he has carried that into Western Pennsylvania…
There are those who raise the level of play to match the urgency let us see if Big Sid cab raise his game…or…will Lucic, Chara, and their pals….
It’s a great game and this is a great matchup …obviously the Pens have flopped in game one, but it is only One game! Go Bs!

    • thesportsjudge - Jun 3, 2013 at 2:34 PM

Rejean “Ray” Shero (born July 28, 1962) is the current general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was hired on May 25, 2006

That would be an interesting feat seeing as though he would have been less than 20 years old.

  19. gfyu - Jun 3, 2013 at 4:37 PM

Gordie Howe signed with Bruins this morning, Mr.Elbows is gonna show Cryosby first hand / elbow how to get another players jaw permanently WIRED SHUT :)
