Video: Malkin fights Bergeron, Crosby jaws at Chara

Jun 1, 2013, 10:33 PM EDT

After two controversial hits in the same second period, it’s not shocking that things got a little nasty between the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 1 on Saturday. Some might be surprised by the specific agents of nastiness, though.

As you can see from the video below, Evgeni Malkin dropped the gloves with Patrice Bergeron while Sidney Crosby jawed with both Zdeno Chara and Tuukka Rask in the waning moments of the middle frame:

Here’s some insightful advice for Crosby: if you have to fight one of them … go with Rask.

  1. titansbro - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:42 PM

Crosby is essentially the NHLs version of LeBron James. Wildly talented but such a b****. What a shame.

    • joestemme - Jun 2, 2013 at 1:46 AM

Not saying that Crosby is as ‘protected’ by the NHL as King James is by the NBA (could anybody, really?), but I loved that re-do on the faceoff where Crosby slashed the Bruins in the shins after the whistle. Now, you see guys get tossed from the circle for just looking funny at the Ref, but, Crosby slashes the guy and doesn’t get tossed??!!
AND, the Ref talked to Crosby for 10 or 15 seconds after the slash. What did the Ref say? “Gee, Cindy, you really shouldn’t do that. Now, if you do it again. I might have to ask your permission to not let you take the face-off. Is that OK? I won’t call a Penalty on you for the slash or nuthin’, just sayin'”

    • lindjd - Jun 2, 2013 at 8:58 AM

Crosby’s mouth diminishes any respect he earns with talent. As anyone who watched the game, two teams played the game and both were doing a lot of hitting which has been part of the game since its inception. If Crosby does not like it, I suggest he play pond or men’s league pickup hockey we hitting it illegal.

  2. jhuck92 - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:43 PM

If Crosby keeps jawing at Chara, he might get it broken again.

    • esracerx46 - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:34 PM

The best part about that was at the beginning of the Crosby Chara yell in match was watching Chara bend down like he was talking to a 5 yr old. Hysterical!

  3. REDSKINSFORLIFE - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:44 PM

Chara would have ended his career for sure…. Maybe his pathetic existence.

    • drone501 - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:34 PM

go to where frustrated cap fans go. your opinion doesn’t matter. you are non existant on here.

      • dudermcrbohan - Jun 2, 2013 at 2:04 AM

if he’s non-existent then how did you know to reply?

  4. hockeyflow33 - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:44 PM

This will be a great series if in Game 1, skill players are dropping the mitts

    • jeff2000m - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:50 PM

If only pitt could hang with the toughness of the bruins……they are much better off running n gunning. Dont try the physical game against boston. It will not work.

  5. daveydawg - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:45 PM

    Crosby is such a skank.

  6. stakex - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:45 PM

Thats right, drop the gloves when your team is down and you are at least their second best goal scorer. That makes a lot of sense. Malkin always looked like an idiot…. someone should really tell him he can’t score form the penelty box.

    • bruininnh1984 - Jun 2, 2013 at 2:42 AM

couldn’t agree with you more. does malkin think he looks like a tough guy dropping the gloves with bergeron(who’s only fought one other time in his career)? he’s clearly grasping at straws, trying to do anything to fire up his team. malkin is better served on the ice than being a spectator in the box.

      • chanceoffleury1 - Jun 2, 2013 at 3:22 AM

Haha, as if Malkin is some sort of NHL Mayweather or Holyfield ? I thought they dropped the gloves pretty unanimously. Each of them got a “preswing” in beforehand and then they dropped them and went at it. I thought that one was 10x better than the Giroux-Crosby one from last year.

  7. jeff2000m - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:46 PM

Wow crosby! Such a great player with such poor leadership! Give malkin the “C”

    • einjzmolf - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:56 PM

ironically, the penguins GM decided to sign 2 captains at the trade deadline. says alot about their ‘real’ captain, eh!

      • killerpgh - Jun 2, 2013 at 10:10 AM

Yeah, because the Bruins didnt bing in a former captain in a Jagr or try to bring Iginla as well. So I guess that means the Bruins GM has no faith in Chara’s leadership based on your comment.

  8. REDSKINSFORLIFE - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:47 PM

Cindy still complaining when he was obviously in the wrong. Such a whiney brat.

  9. jameswestphal - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:48 PM

I know what that “C” on Crosby’s sweater stands for

    • therealdeal18 - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:56 PM

i know too. captain. youre welcome.

      • therealdeal18 - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:33 PM

well 27 people (so far) clearly don’t understand hockey. C on the sweater = Captain. Seriously guys do you even watch hockey?

    • broadstreetbeatdown - Jun 2, 2013 at 1:57 AM

      Cunt

      • 19to77 - Jun 2, 2013 at 2:34 AM

Huh. That’s not censored here. I’ll be damned.

    • chanceoffleury1 - Jun 2, 2013 at 3:27 AM

      “Crazy Good.”

Gah! If only this was a Jonathan Toews thread it’d be too perfect. :(

  10. pastabelly - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:50 PM

In big games, Krejci is right up there with the two Penguins centers. Statistics don’t lie.

  11. malkinrulez - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:52 PM

stakex u r a joke, Bergeron dropped the gloves had he skated away u would have roasted him for that. Bergeron also was in the box , u know the guy assigned to Crosby .

    • jeff2000m - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:54 PM

Malkin did the right thing unlike crosby that pansy!

      • bruininnh1984 - Jun 2, 2013 at 2:53 AM

nope taking himself off the ice for 5 minutes was beyond dumb, though i do understand what he was trying to do

      • johnstone17 - Jun 2, 2013 at 6:29 AM

I’m not a big Crosby fan or defender, but the dude had his jaw broken two months ago. If he drops the gloves, he risks getting hurt again & being out for the rest of the series & even if he’s not hurt he’s off for 5 with his team trailing in a game that the Bruins had started to truly limit The Penguins chances. You need your best players on the ice, not the box.

      • coronakid76 - Jun 3, 2013 at 8:13 AM

So why is Crosby on the ICE?? He by far isn’t the best player at the moment on the team. He is playing like a 3rd liner!!

    • stakex - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:55 PM

I guess you can’t see all that well…. Malkin was the first one to drop the gloves.

    • drone501 - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:43 PM

bergeron threw the first punch, got knocked on his ass. end of story. im pissed. im sure rask will be stopping multiple pucks in his sleep tonite. hopefully, reality will set in monday.

  12. sjsharks66 - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:53 PM

I thought Malking fighting would have helped the pens win some face offs…. I was wrong. Good fight though. This is going to be a fun series to watch.

  13. icelovinbrotha215 - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:54 PM

Shouldn’t have Malkin received an additional 2 for fighting with his 1/2er?

    • killerpgh - Jun 2, 2013 at 10:15 AM

No. Its only an extra 2 minutes for “face protection” if you get assessed an instigator penalty.

  14. rb5150 - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:58 PM

Gino was classless. He got the takedown. There was no reason to sit on top of a downed player and continue throwing punches.

    • mp1131211 - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:18 PM

Bergy is a douche. So that’s one reason…

      • jeff2000m - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:55 PM

Bergy is a much better leader than that candy-ass crosby

      • mp1131211 - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:58 PM

I’ll give you that but only because Crosby is a total girl. rb stated there was no reason to continue throwing punches. I simply offered one.

  15. alswingman - Jun 1, 2013 at 10:59 PM

That is hilarious. You can tell by Rask’s body language he was completely confused by Crosby. What was he doing, skating around hoping someone would take his bait?

  16. taintedlombardis - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:00 PM

Should have been a game misconduct on Malkin. Helmet, visor, and his fighting strap wasn’t on. What a nightmare of a game for the Pens. Cooke did it again. Destroyed on the ice. Cindy showing the world what a btch she is on prime time.

    • thesportsjudge - Jun 2, 2013 at 1:25 AM

NO WAY IN HELL the NHL gives Malkin a game for breakin the rules.

  17. hammerhead5573 - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:04 PM

Chara to Crosby: “Excuse me little man”

    • therealdeal18 - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:35 PM

Oh role playing! I’m in. Crosby to Chara: “Yes Ogre?” Youre up hammerhead.

      • thesportsjudge - Jun 2, 2013 at 1:26 AM

Chara to Crosby : “How’s that sand in your vagina?”

  18. steelers4385 - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:12 PM

Oh i see. Automaticlly because a guy is tall that makes him tough and he was just born to brawl. Gimme a break. Anyone who has been in real fights knows tall guys are just as easy to knock out as someone shorter.

    • ryanw822 - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:14 PM

yeah and anyone who has been in a real fight knows the man usually beats the person with lady parts.

      • mp1131211 - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:21 PM

Wow- you are a COMPLETE a**hole.

      • mp1131211 - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:22 PM

I get the dig at Crosby and everything, and that’s all good. I don’t like that pansy either. But wow- either you didn’t read what you wrote or you are a total piece of curbside sh*t

      • drone501 - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:35 PM

you, my friend, are an ass. this is hockey talk. just go away.

      • mp1131211 - Jun 2, 2013 at 12:12 AM

Hockey is about skill and class. Beating women requires neither and is disgusting. Not funny.

    • comeonnowguys - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:26 PM

No dog in this fight, but Crosby-sized Chara would destroy Crosby as well. Ain’t about height.

  19. drone501 - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:38 PM

glad that the refs stepped in to break up the malkin fight. he could have done some serious damage to bergeron. even i draw a line when it comes to sports violence.

  20. 19to77 - Jun 1, 2013 at 11:50 PM

Captain Selfish Penalties better get his act together fast. He’s way too skilled to play that stupid. Of all players, the one who can least afford to be a walking liability is your captain and your best player. You need to bear down and focus and lead your team in doing the same. Better hope Bylsma sits Crosby’s ass down and absolutely lets him have it for his antics tonight.

  21. arbruins - Jun 2, 2013 at 12:12 AM

Crosby and malkin are Betman’s boys. Everyone knows it and Crosby showed his true colors again tonight. If he spent more time as a leader rather than a whiner then maybe they would have scored at least one goal.

Too much time spent complaining to the refs, not enough time spent doing what he is paid to do.

  22. bobhpine - Jun 2, 2013 at 12:21 AM

Redskins for life! Haha. What a loser you are. I bet you bought RGIII a toaster for his wedding. You probably love those thin little dreads. I bet you think about them all the time when you’re alone, after mom already tucked you in.

I love the cross section of losers that the Pens attract. So many jealous little punks. I’ll relish your silence when actual talent takes this series over.

The redskins though! Hahahahaha. So pathetic on so many levels.

  23. bman7206 - Jun 2, 2013 at 12:40 AM

Cindy has a chance against Chara right? Little b*tch.

  24. thesportsjudge - Jun 2, 2013 at 1:27 AM

Even though Crosbaby deserved to get punched in the mouth, I think chara restrained knowing what Syndy just went through a couple months ago.

  25. broadstreetbeatdown - Jun 2, 2013 at 2:07 AM

Awesome job by the Bs. Keep playing your game and captain vagina and herman munster will continue to take ridiculously stupid penalties and Cooke, well he’ll resort to his usual douchbaggery. (so much for cleaning up his game eh boys)?

  26. garrison1981 - Jun 2, 2013 at 6:09 AM

Mallon manhandled him! Crosby’s a Lil punk!

  27. nhstateline - Jun 2, 2013 at 7:43 AM

The Pens need to show Crosby Chara’s fight hightlight reel. Seriously, the man is in amazing shape and is so big his punches gain momentum on the way down to his opponent’s head. They especially need to show him this one: http://www.stanleycupofchowder.com/2011/9/30/2459011/friday-night-fights-zdeno-chara-vs-david-koci One punch and there goes the guy’s nose. There are lots of guys Sid would do ok against in a fight on the Bruins. Z isn’t one of them. Plus, their coaches also need to remind the Pens players, this team won a game 7 on the road in the SCF two years ago, the little mind games aren’t going to work. Now playing with speed in the Boston zone like the did before they lost their collective minds….that could work.

    • jl9830 - Jun 2, 2013 at 9:16 AM

1.) Crosby doesn’t care, he’s only goading Chara because he’s trying to get a penalty called for his team, and doesn’t think Chara would actually hit him back.

2.) Sid can take a lot of guys on Boston? Come on now. He’s a great hockey player, but maybe he can take someone like Kelly or Peverley. Good luck against Marchand or McQuaid. They’d destroy Crosby.

      • nhstateline - Jun 2, 2013 at 10:03 AM

Chara will hit him back. Crosby’s not right about that. I bet he’d do ok with those guys and Thornton but see Chara as total mismatch for Crosby. Too big, too conditioned. Sid’s a good sized guy himself and he’s in good shape but Chara’s a whole other level on both accounts. He’s the one guy on the Bruins that the rest of the league wants nothing to do with as far as fighting goes. I was happy Pittsburgh played like they did in the second half of the game. Exactly the way the Bruins get to the next round. It was the run and gun stuff in the first half that made me extremely nervous.

  28. buffalomafia - Jun 2, 2013 at 8:27 AM

Get it right guys! Its Cynthia Crosby!

She can dish it out but cant take it!

    • jl9830 - Jun 2, 2013 at 9:14 AM

Call him a crybaby all you want, but enough with the women jokes. It’s offensive to women, most of which are tougher than Crosby.

      • thesportsjudge - Jun 2, 2013 at 10:35 AM

        Fair enough point.

    • drone501 - Jun 2, 2013 at 9:30 AM

      buffalo, city of chumps.

  29. jl9830 - Jun 2, 2013 at 9:10 AM

Glad Malkin was there to take on Boston’s big, tough LADY BYNG contender. What a tough guy. I hope Crosby and Malkin get there comeuppance soon.

  30. jl9830 - Jun 2, 2013 at 9:12 AM

And Crosby looks quite foolish with his Dirty Sanchez mustache pushing Chara. HE ACTUALLY PUSHED CHARA!! Chara should have destroyed him.

  31. earpaniac - Jun 2, 2013 at 9:55 AM

Crosby is so talented, but he’s practically impossible to like. He is the definition of “entitled punk”.

  32. valoisjoeybfeld69 - Jun 2, 2013 at 10:35 AM

you’re all correct with respect to Crosby whining, but I think you’re all blind to the fact that most players in the NHL do the same as he does. That’s the ONLY part of his game that needs improvement. That said, everyone of you dissing on him would take him on your team to be your #1 center. If you think you wouldn’t then you’re all in denial. Seems to me that you don’t need to have school yard fights and resorting to name calling, and this doesn’t only pertain to Crosby detractors.

  33. penzfan329 - Jun 2, 2013 at 10:35 AM

Crosby stepping up to the big guys. He’s got balls. Great leadership

  34. bronxsanman - Jun 2, 2013 at 11:38 AM

I think Chara showed extreme class by not hitting a woman, even if she is wearing a penguins jersey. How did that girl get on the ice anyway?

  35. alwaysgame7 - Jun 2, 2013 at 1:41 PM

Notice Crosby didn’t do much talking/pushing when they were down 3-0. He knew if he started something when the bruins had a commanding league he was going to lose some more teeth. Would’ve loved to see Chara bust him up but good on him for staying disciplined.., like say, a real Captain?

  36. penzfan329 - Jun 2, 2013 at 1:59 PM

Malkin sure got the best of him in that fight
