TSN’s Darren Dreger reports the Dallas Stars have received permission from the Maple Leafs to speak with Toronto Marlies head coach Dallas Eakins about their opening behind the bench.

The Stars aren’t the only team interested in Eakins, however, as the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, and New York Rangers are curious about him as well. The Oilers are a curious team there as they’ve already got Ralph Krueger as their head coach.

Eakins is one of the hottest names for opening coaching positions in the league this summer and it’s for good reason.┬áThe former NHL defenseman has done a standout job in four seasons coaching in the AHL putting up a 157-114-41 record in that time and taking them to the playoffs the last two seasons. Last year, the Marlies made it to the Calder Cup finals before losing to Norfolk.

Dallas, how does it feel to be the first coach in NHL history to have the same name as the city you coach in?
When the fans start cheering for Dallas, are you, Dallas, going to turn around and acknowledge the crowd?
When a media person asks you “How are things going with Dallas?”, are you going to ask them “You mean me, Dallas, or the team Dallas”?
    This could really get confusing!

I’m 100% sure that Dallas Eakins WILL be coaching in the NHL next season. Too bad for Leafs fans that it won’t be in Toronto. I think he’s a better coach than Randy Carlyle.

So many times last season Carlyle was making decisions that appeared to be attempts to teach various players a lesson, instead of trying to win hockey games.
