Discuss: Kings edge Sharks in tight Game 7

Well, that was something else.

The Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks engaged in a tight, high-level Game 7 on Tuesday, with the Kings winning it 2-1. Let’s discuss the contest.

  • OK, which Jonathan Quick save was your favorite: his second-period stop against Logan Couture, that late jaw-dropper vs. Joe Pavelski or one of the other hold-your-breath numbers in the waning moments?
  • Justin Williams is just unconscious in Game 7 matches. He’s good normally, but nine points in four of those situations is something else. Can the Kings find a way to hypnotize him into thinking every game is a Game 7?
  • Antti Niemi deserves some serious credit for making big saves in his own right, despite the defeat.
  • The Sharks on a whole really pushed the Kings. Was this the kind of effort that puts most of the “choking” talk to rest or will that never end unless they win a Stanley Cup? Is this the kind of output that might at least keep the major San Jose players employed or will some changes come anyway?
  • Which team should the Kings worry about the most: the Chicago Blackhawks or the Detroit Red Wings? Which team would you like to see them face?
  • Where does this series rank among your favorite 2013 postseason matchups?

another year another choke for the sharks

    • jernster21 - May 28, 2013 at 11:52 PM

The Sharks didn’t choke…they just got beat by a team that looks like they could win another Cup. This coming from someone who thinks SJ normally does choke in the playoffs…not this series.

Williams got asked what the difference was in the series – the only difference was home ice advantage and one goal at the final horn.

    • titansrbeast - May 28, 2013 at 11:52 PM

If that’s what you want to call choking. What I saw was a great effort from the Sharks matched by an even better game by Quick. LA’s goaltending truly carries them along, and the Kings were able to hang on. That being said, I hope the winner of CHI/DET destroys LA’s chances of repeating…can’t stand seeing them win lol

    • sjawesome - May 28, 2013 at 11:55 PM

Really? The sharks are the 6th seed. Making it to game 7 of the second round is no choke.

The series itself was really close. The kings got more bounces in game 7 and that was the difference. Sharks still need to work on their penalty kill.

      Lets go sharks

      • devilsarethebest - May 28, 2013 at 11:59 PM

Love it when a fan can still say “Lets Go Sharks” right after they got eliminated. extremely classy and hats off to you.

    • Habib Marwan - May 29, 2013 at 3:31 AM

they choked , they lost, they lose every year , failure of a franchise, not too sure how many more adjectives , words or phrases i need to use to describe this team…. but hey keep fighting logic sharks fans…it’s ok . enjoy the golf channel

      • ibieiniid - May 29, 2013 at 8:15 AM

I’m sorry your mother was eaten by a shark…. but it’s time to drop your grudge.

      • Habib Marwan - May 29, 2013 at 12:17 PM

grudge? lol they are an insignificant franchise with literally zero success in the playoffs.. oh and try another comeback other then outdated momma jokes

      • ibieiniid - May 29, 2013 at 12:29 PM

yeah the grudge that one ate your mother to death. wasn’t a ‘your mom’ joke necessarily…. just MENTIONED your mom.

but there’s far worse teams out there as far as playoff success. SJ has only been around 20 years or so and are consistently in the playoffs…. and winning a few rounds. sure they don’t have a cup, or cup appearance… but they’ve been to the CFs 3 times in their first 20 years… there’s a lot of other teams that haven’t even had THAT much success. you’re just hating on the Sharks, hence the grudge joke.

in fact, I did the factchecking a while back to argue with some other son of a shark-eaten-mother. and for some reason in that convo, it garnered a comparison to the Flyers. from what I remember the Sharks have played in either more or ALMOST as many playoff series as the Flyers since the Sharks entrance into the league. that’s comparing a brand new team to a team that was well established for over 20 years, and that is considered a contender year after year going into the playoffs (obviously they haven’t won in a while…), and the Sharks are up there with them in series played. they aren’t that bad off.

      • Habib Marwan - May 29, 2013 at 12:54 PM

what good are all these playoff appearances if they got nothing to show for? , explain that stat geek

      • ibieiniid - May 29, 2013 at 12:56 PM

alright then dude, continue on down your path of “abolish all teams that haven’t won cups since 1990.”

…I’ll be right here, watching great playoff series like SJ/LAK.

      • Habib Marwan - May 29, 2013 at 4:20 PM

never said it wasnt a great series ibieinid, just pointing out the facts that the sharks are playoff flops every year

  2. sjsblitz - May 28, 2013 at 11:52 PM

Good game and congratz LA. I still hate you regardless but can respect a well played game. Enjoy your cup run, and good luck with the Unstoppable Force that is Pittsburgh

    • ibieiniid - May 29, 2013 at 8:18 AM

whoa whoa whoa…. I’m not ready to call this a LA/PIT final yet. we got a lot of great hockey to go

also, did anybody notice that if the Hawks win, that’ll be the last 4 cup-winning teams in the conference finals? even if the Wings win, that’s 4 of the last 5 cup-winning teams. as much as I’d like to have seen some surprises in the 3rd round…. that lineup makes for AMAZING hockey.

      • ibieiniid - May 29, 2013 at 8:23 AM

also, if the Sharks had won the cup this year, that would have been 10 different Stanley cup champs in the last 10 seasons. but nay, we ended the streak at 9.

…this is why I love the NHL.

  3. thewaytonever - May 28, 2013 at 11:53 PM

First off congrats to the Kings and thier fans; Quick is just amazing. This series was a good one. Sharks played thier hearts out in every game but game 5. Could have gone either way but it is what it is. We should have played better on the PP and in Staples but we list to a hell if a team. Holy your heads high Sharks fans we have nothing to be ashamed of.

    • devilsarethebest - May 29, 2013 at 12:01 AM

      Love the class.

  4. packerpride03 - May 28, 2013 at 11:53 PM

Sharks fans can go hug there western Conference regular season champions banner now

  5. sharksfan754 - May 28, 2013 at 11:55 PM

Well my fellow sharks fans this is an all too familiar feeling for us. First and foremost I would like to give credit to the Kings for beating us. And all loyalties aside, what a series 7 games that were all good.. It hurts but as always my support to the sharks remains unwavering and eternal. One of these years when we finally get it together, it’ll be one of the greatest days of my life. Until then stay classy sharks fans our time will come be it next year or 10 years from now or more (god I hope not!)

    • devilsarethebest - May 29, 2013 at 12:00 AM

      So much class there. Amazing.

      • sharksfan754 - May 29, 2013 at 12:40 AM

And a ps here, I will be wearing my sharks black armour jersey tomorrow (like I always do the day after they’re eliminated) to show that I support them even when they don’t get it done. This season could have very well have not have happened at all, let us not forget that as the playoffs roll on

    • croz68 - May 29, 2013 at 1:39 AM

Digging the class too. You Sharkies are ok by me and I suspect most of the Kings fans on here who aren’t total DB’s. Your day will come just have to hang in there like us long suffering fans of The Defending Stanley Cup Champions. Great series. See you boys in October.

  6. atwatercrushesokoye - May 28, 2013 at 11:57 PM

This is not a choke, a disappointing end for the Sharks no doubt, but losing in game 7 in a close game and close series to the defending Stanley Cup Champions is certainly not choking.

  7. devilsarethebest - May 28, 2013 at 11:57 PM

Really, really hope the Kings don’t win again this year, which is why I want them to play………… the Red Wings. They’ve been pretty hot since the end of the regular season and while Chicago is playing some stellar hockey, I just have a gut feeling the Wings could pull off the comeback. Anyways, message to whoever wins that series, don’t let the Kings repeat!

    • atwatercrushesokoye - May 29, 2013 at 12:01 AM

I agree with you on that, the Kings are a boring team to watch, add to that blohard will be even more of a smug a-hole than usual if they win two in a row, I don’t care which of the other 4 teams beats them I just don’t want them to repeat.

      • devilsarethebest - May 29, 2013 at 12:18 AM

My problem with the Kings are their fans. Most of them know nothing about hockey but if you speak to them they’ll make sure you know that the Kings are cup champions. Funny, but until last year, most of them didn’t know what the Cup was. Most of them are just LA partygirls.

      • dannymac17 - May 29, 2013 at 12:55 AM

oh yea, bitter devils fans LMAOOO

    • croz68 - May 29, 2013 at 2:05 AM

Well this stupid Kings fan who knows nothing about the game is just glad you fools got stuck with Kovalsuck for the next 7 or 8 years and we didn’t! Also glad that our best player would NEVER bail out on our team as yours did. And to freakin Minnesota no less. What does that say about your organ-eye-zation?

      GKG! GKG! GKG! GKG! GKG!

      • devilsarethebest - May 29, 2013 at 3:04 AM

Just says our fans our real, not whichever celebrity made some money off a new movie. We lost him because we didn’t have the money to pay him, that’s it. As for Kovalchuk, I’m saying it now and you can quote me on it later, Hart finalist next year. Also, I didn’t say all Kings fan know nothing about hockey, I said MOST. Why you getting so defensive? As for your best player NEVER bailing, Gretzky, 96. Shows how big of a Kings fan you really are.

      • ron05342 - May 29, 2013 at 4:22 AM

        @devilsarethebest:

First of all, you are clearly a moron.

Now that that is out of the way, I have been a Kings fan since 1967. I have forgotten more about hockey then you know about the sport. I am also not alone; many of us have been there from the beginning from the lows to the highs (mostly lows). A team that has been in existence for 46 years and counting; we have a huge fan base that knows the sport, much more so then a team whose fans have been around for only 31 years…like…like the Devils.

So take your East arrogance and shove it up your azz.

Oh, by the way, we are in the WCF. Where is your team right now? Yeah, I thought so.

  8. bensawesomeness - May 28, 2013 at 11:57 PM

Last 5 teams in the tournament are the last 5 teams to win the Cup.

  9. alwaysgame7 - May 29, 2013 at 12:00 AM

Good series! Shame it took to the 3rd period for SJ to really get moving. However Quick deserves a raise after the last half of that 3rd period. Congrats LA. So what would be the better series? LA V Detroit or Chicago? Guess well find out

  10. rocoop - May 29, 2013 at 12:01 AM

    Great series!!! Period!!!

  11. heynyc61 - May 29, 2013 at 12:01 AM

Great win for the Kings… The sharks played very Well… No chokes here people. Kings are just a little better

Kings vs hawks or kings vs wings with home ice?

  12. hrudey - May 29, 2013 at 12:01 AM

I wouldn’t say it was a choke job by the Sharks – they went toe to toe with the Kings, never backing down and never giving up. I tip my cap to them for an effort they and their fans should be proud of, even if the end result didn’t go their way. It’s just that Quick is just unbelievably good right now – the last 22 playoff games where the Kings have scored twice, they’re 22-0.

  13. pirovash88 - May 29, 2013 at 12:02 AM

What is that, 7 years straight of making the playoffs and choking? That’s gotta be some kind of record right?

    • atwatercrushesokoye - May 29, 2013 at 12:23 AM

You need to figure out what the definition of choking is, Vancouver losing to lower ranked teams is choking, Boston losing a series 4-3 after being up 3-0 in the series and in game 4 is choking. Losing in game 7, in an extremely close and hard fought series, to a higher seeded team, who are also defending cup champions is not choking.

      • Habib Marwan - May 29, 2013 at 3:34 AM

they lost yet again in a 7th game playoff series… that’s called choking . they suck. end of story.

  14. Stiller43 - May 29, 2013 at 12:02 AM

I have no clue about this but…is taking your mask off and throwing it (forcing the game to stop) a delay of game penalty? Or should it be?

I realize his team was going down ice and he likely only did it because he was injured, but…idk that just seemed weird to me

    • devilsarethebest - May 29, 2013 at 12:05 AM

No. The announcer I was listening to explained that it was legal because his helmet broke. Otherwise, yes, it would have been a penalty for delay-of-game.

    • manchestermiracle - May 29, 2013 at 12:09 AM

It seemed to me to be no worse than being stabbed in the throat with a stick and having it correctly called goaltender interference, then watching the other ref call you for diving. Which is it, boys? He got speared or he faked it? How the hell could it be both? The only thing that took away from this outstanding series was the sub-par officiating.

  15. oquintero99 - May 29, 2013 at 12:04 AM

I think the Sharks had a great run this season. Mclellan did a good job coaching this team butthe Sharks need a new GM. Wilson has had chance after chance and has not gone to a SC final. Time for a change in the front office and coach should be given a shot with the new GM

  16. lakingscup12 - May 29, 2013 at 12:05 AM

So Sharks fans, where is the “Beat By LA” chant???

But dang what a series!! I give the Sharks a ton of credit, they played really well. This series could have gone either way, just came down to home ice advantage. Respect to the Sharks, it will be fun playing them again next year!

    • devilsarethebest - May 29, 2013 at 12:07 AM

Next year they may be a very, very different team, if you listen to some of the rumors out there. No Thorton, no Marleau.

      • atwatercrushesokoye - May 29, 2013 at 12:32 AM

They’re in a similar spot to Vancouver in some regards, this nucleus just can’t get the cup as is, they need a shakeup in personnel at the top of the roster, probably not an entire change over but a couple of faces leaving and a couple of faces coming in and changing the dynamic. Unlike Vancouver they’ve got cap space to do it, especially if either Marleau or Thornton are gone.

The Sharks could also stand to pickup one of those old grizzled vets who always seems to be on cup winning teams, like Mike Keane back in the day, not sure what Justin Williams contract status is but if he’s a free agent, or available for trade, and I’m a team relatively close he’d be my target.

  17. sjsharks66 - May 29, 2013 at 12:06 AM

Good win Kings. Quick is unstoppable. Sharks played a hell of a series. Until October boys! GO SHARKS! Bleed black and teal. Win or lose.

      – Bitter Devils Fan

    • croz68 - May 29, 2013 at 1:46 AM

Hey sjsharks66 thanks for being all class and not bashing us like the DB devils fan above. You guys played a helluva series and deserve a ton of credit. You just ran into Quickie as he was really rounding into playoff form. Without him you guys would have taken the series I think it’s safe to say. Hang in there. The Sharks time will come. Take it from us Kings fans. See you boys in October and….GKG! ;)

    • Habib Marwan - May 29, 2013 at 3:35 AM

by the way sjsharks66 you will not be allowed to switch back over to your pens bandwagon … go away now , get lost

  18. bauxjangles - May 29, 2013 at 12:11 AM

It was a hard fought game and both teams should be proud but the kings took this first playoff meeting between the two teams and that’s something that can’t be taken away from us. Whatever happens from here on out, we will always be able to say that we took the first series win.

    • hrudey - May 29, 2013 at 12:14 AM

Offer void for those of us who remember 2011, unfortunately.

      • sjawesome - May 29, 2013 at 12:20 AM

I guess you are a bandwagon kings fan.

      • devilsarethebest - May 29, 2013 at 12:23 AM

        Or just stupid.

    • sjsharks66 - May 29, 2013 at 12:43 AM

      idiot

    • pirovash88 - May 29, 2013 at 1:28 AM

Relax guys, it’s an honest mistake. No need to be bitter over todays outcome.

      • devilsarethebest - May 29, 2013 at 3:35 AM

I totally agree. Sorry for my comment above, or any other offensive comment about Kings fans. I was just rooting for the Sharks and needed a vent when they lost.

  19. blomfeld - May 29, 2013 at 12:20 AM

    WE DID IT !!!

That was truly a great series friends and truth be known, it could have ‘easily’ gone either way. The SJ Sharks are a ‘quality’ organization and their fans ought to be proud of their team’s performance. Nonetheless, we LA Kings have ‘carried the day’ yet again ! Therefore let us now rejoice, rest and ‘truly’ prepare for that which comes next …

    GO KINGS GO !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

  20. manchestermiracle - May 29, 2013 at 12:22 AM

Quick was nearly unbeatable, but the Sharks showed how to do it: Crowd the net and screen him from slap shots. No goalie can see through people.

Quick didn’t lose more than two games in any series in last year’s playoffs (and that wasn’t until the final) and the Sharks beat him three times.

If the Sharks keep their core intact I can see this experience making them even tougher next year.

Sorry some of you don’t like physical, hard-working hockey, but Kings’ fans love the way their team finds ways to win. We find nothing boring at all about winning.

I’d rather the Kings play the Wings in the WCF just because of home ice. Last year the Kings were amazing on the road. This year they’re more of a home-cooking kind of team. Either way it’s just nice to be back playing for a spot in the finals.

  21. rap49er - May 29, 2013 at 12:32 AM

Quick was the difference. Sharks played as well but the puck couldn’t get past him. Next year, don’t settle for a lower seed but fight hard to get home ice.

  22. steelers4385 - May 29, 2013 at 12:44 AM

The kings do suck. I hate the sharks too but if it wasnt for quick id be more than happy to put my money where my mouth is that they wouldnt get past first round with a guy like Fleury in net.

    • dannymac17 - May 29, 2013 at 1:05 AM

yea they suck so much, back to back WCF and a Lord Stanley

      what was everyone thinking?

    • pirovash88 - May 29, 2013 at 1:30 AM

Come on broscout quit pretending you know what you’re talking about and go back to waiting on football season to start up.

    • ron05342 - May 29, 2013 at 4:25 AM

Another moron. LOL, I can’t wait to see the Kings mop up the ice with the Pens. Vokoun is only slightly better than The Flower.

But what am I thinking? Pens will face a hard-hitting team for the first time in the playoffs. Bruins in 5.

  23. aldog83 - May 29, 2013 at 12:56 AM

    Thank you Kings!

LA being a great place to live (and people resenting LA)
does not take away from winning and that you are Champs!

You have the heart of LA hockey fans!

    Go get um!

    You make us proud!

  24. windmiller4 - May 29, 2013 at 1:40 AM

I doubt to many will see this as its buried in the comments, but did anyone hear the announcer say that the ref went over to the timekeeper box and told them not to show a replay of a controversial call?? These refs are an absolute joke. Its sad how they have put a blemish on the playoffs. Something needs to be done, cause they don’t even want to be held accountable and show fans a replay of a call they know they screwed up.

    • croz68 - May 29, 2013 at 1:53 AM

I couldn’t agree more! What are we hockey fans just supposed to turn a blind eye to your awful officiating? Ridiculous that they blow call after call and then try and keep the fans from seeing what really happens. Hey Bettman you got your 10 year CBA now how about addressing the situation with your awful refs and their massive egos and arrogance!

      • windmiller4 - May 29, 2013 at 4:17 AM

If we want to get rid of massive egos and arrogance we’re gonna need to start with the biggest ego of them all and get rid of Bettman.

  25. jkaflagg - May 29, 2013 at 6:03 AM

Great series, could have gone either way….Sharks have nothing to be ashamed of. Was glad to see the Kings win after some of the idiot media talk about ” lack of Game 7 experience” and “last Kings Game 7 win was in 1989″….when some players were not even born yet ! And of course the real screamer, the “Sharks are frustrating Jonathan Quick” stories….he looked pretty flustered out there tonight, eh ?

  26. phillyphanatic77 - May 29, 2013 at 10:39 AM

To be honest, I don’t think there were many people (outside of San Jose) who thought the Sharks would win game 7. They put up a valiant effort but they had to buck the trend of neither team being able to win on the road. And in a game like that it’s hard to doubt the likes of Justin Williams and JQuick, two unbelievably clutch playoff performers. When Quick made that great glove stop on Pavelski, it just seemed like fate. And a two goal lead is almost insurmountable when Quick plays like that. Niemi was great too, he just wasn’t Quick. Very entertaining series though.

  27. johnnyd76 - May 29, 2013 at 12:46 PM

    PENS fan here –

Just want to wish congrats to the Kings and say to the Sharks fans your team did an awsome job. Could not be any closer than this. Could have been the Sharks except for some great saves from Quick.

Can only hope the SCF will be as exciting!!!
