Video: Senators’ Neil spears Penguins’ Murray below the belt

May 24, 2013, 10:47 PM EDT

There was bad blood between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Ottawa Senators, right up until the waning minutes of the final game of the series.

Senators’ tough guy Chris Neil caught Penguins’ defenseman Douglas Murray with a spear between the legs in the third period of Game 5 on Friday night. Neil was assessed a slashing minor. Not only did he spear Murray, but when the blue liner got up off the ice, Neil tried to deliver a pair of punches to Murray, which created a scrum in the Penguins’ zone.

The Penguins defeated the Senators 6-2 and won the series 4-1, advancing to the Eastern Conference final for the first time since 2009.

    Neil is garbage.

Fight someone your own size and IQ….oh Tucker is gone? Well then take a goddamn hint.

Nothing new from Neil! He has always been a P.O.S. and if you asked me to guess what player in the NHL would smack somebody in the stones with his stick than punch him in the back of the head. Neil is the only name I would toss out there. I can’t wait for the Karma train to put a stop to that bums career. I get what his job is..I get the only chance the Sens had to win is by sucking the pens into asshattery like the Flyers did last year. Too bad it didn’t work for Neil.. Enjoy the all Canada NHL Golf Invitational next week! 1975

Guy has played for the Sens his whole career. I’d say he owes Karma a few…

Douglas Murray was about to pop Neil’s peanut head after that bush league move. A spear to the man zone should garner a suspension. It won’t. But it should.

Cut Neil some slack, the guy’s obviously going through menopause…

  5. killerpgh - May 24, 2013 at 11:17 PM

I wonder if Eugene Melynk thinks Chris Neil deserves to be in the NHL? Time to launch an investigation….

Tell me again how Matt Cooke is the worst thing to ever happen to hockey. This guy is NOTHING but a no talent THUG. For the owner, city and fans to crucify Cooke for something that was CLEARLY accidental, yet to continue to defend a guy who has ZERO hockey skill and just goes out SOLEY to cheap shot people with an intent to injure is the height of asshattery.

Just another night in the office for the leagues top douche.meanwhile Cooke has yet another game where he was a difference maker.

If he fought Murray like a man he would have lost. Neil is a joke.

  9. steelhammer92 - May 25, 2013 at 6:21 AM

The ref should have let Murray beat the crap out of Neil. It’s a man law that if someone purposely hits you in your jewels, you are free to retaliate.

  10. ironman721 - May 25, 2013 at 8:33 AM

No place for that in any sport for any reason. Should be punished by the league… Harshly!

  11. jobotjones - May 25, 2013 at 8:41 AM

I would pay money to see Murray and Neil drop the gloves. Murray would knock his dumb@$$ back into the lockout.

you have to be nuts to hit somebody in the nuts?

Gotta love how the article refers to him as, “Senators tough guy Chris Neil”? He’s a putz. All bark and no bite. Picks his spots to take blatant cheap shots (like the jab to Croaby’s jaw as they skated passed each other on their way to their respective benches$), then turtles up when someone steps up to challenge him. Tough guy? No way. Punk? Definitely!

  14. drone501 - May 25, 2013 at 4:56 PM

neil either picks his spots or takes chrap shots. he probably pissed that orpik knocked him into next week. do you think neil would challenge lucic.

  15. podevil - May 25, 2013 at 6:33 PM

Neil is a no talent thug….He pulls this crap and then hides behind the refs…Murray will not forget….When they play next year…he should expect a real ass whooping!
